A further object ofthe invention is to provide mea-ns which will firmly hold the partition and box ends while permitting rea-dy` shifting of the same to permit the attachment thereto of" the successive sides, A further object of' the, invention is to provide an apparatus for the stated purpose which may be quickly and easily adjusted so' as to be used in connection with boxes of any dimensionsandV also to permit such adjustment of the parts as will-accommodate box ends or partitions of any thickness. Other incidental objects of the'invention will appear in the course of the following description and the invention resides in vert-,ain novel features which will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In carrying out my invention, l employ `a supporting'frame which may be of any convenient form but is preferably constructed of metal angle bars l, constituting posts, connected at their upper ends by bracing bars 2, asclearly shown in Figi. The posts or corner bars l are closed at their ends by webs@Y so as to attain the greatest possible rigidity and permit thecorner joints to be thoroughly braced. It is also intended to weld the meeting parts together so that the greatest possible strength will be attained. The posts are provided with openings 1l through their branchesy or fianges, the series of openings extending from end to end of each lflange and thereby permitting` the attachment ofthe supported'parts at anydesired height whereby to accommodate the apparatus to the convenience rof the workman. A bench 8` is supported by thc end frames and this bench is also preferablyy constructed of angle bars, the front and rear angle bars 9 being secured to the front and rear flanges of the respectively adjacent corne-r posts and being connected by 'end bars l0 which further brace the structure and prevent spreading of the parts. TWhen the box end` is a built-up member and not constructed of a single piece of lumber, as is frequently the casen the pieces whichv are to be be joined to make the box end are lai-rl upon the rests and the clamping plates are adj usted so that the lugs 21 will bear against the opposite edges ot the said ,pieces and hold them in proper position while cross pieces are nailed thereto but when the box ends are sawed complete from a piece of lumber, these clamping plates are removed or reversed so that the lugs 21 will project downwardly and bear against thel sides of the rests as, otherwise, they will interfere with the turning of the box to facilitate the nailing of the successive sides. lt will also be understood, oli course, that after the labricated box ends have been completed the lugs will be removed to permit the box ends e to be properly supported and shifted as the nailing operation progresses. lt will also be f understood that when box-ends are being fabricated, the box-supporting clamps and the parts cooperating therewith are removedl or else adjusted to the extreme rear o' the machine so as to be out of the way.

The clampingplates 39 and 40 having been adjusted to the dimensions of the box to be finished, box ends, indicated at -and 7l, andan intermediate partition, indicatedl at 72, if the saine is to be used, are placed on edge upon the rests 16 and pushed in between the plates 39 and 40 so as to be fr-i'ctionally held by the saine. @ne side of the box, indicated at 73, ris then placed upon the upper edges of lthefbox ends and the partition and nails driven through the side intox the partition and the endsin the usual manner. After the side has been thus secured in place, it is lifted slightly and thebox ends and partition` thus raised from the respeotiverests, after whichthe box side with the. ends. and .partition attached thereto are rotated so that the nailed side will be at the front of vthe apparatus, after which the partly finished box is lowered and pushed rearwardly so that `it will be supported by the rests 1G and the box ends and partition firmly held by the box end-engaging clamps. The bottoni is then nailed in place'and the described operation repeated in order to bring the third side of the box uppermost, the first completed side then being at the bottom of the box andthe box bottom being at the front of the apparatus. The partlynished box may then be withdrawn from the clamps and put aside and another box nailed. The top of the box is not placed thereon until after the box is filled so that after the bottoni and two sides have been secured in place the work in which my apparatus is used is finished.
t will be readily seen that l have produced a very strong and durable apparatus by the use of which the production of the boxes will be greatly facilitated. The box ends and the partition, when the same is used, will be firmly supported in an upright position so that the workman is not called upon to hold eitherbox end or the partition while nailing` a side or a bottom thereon and the frictional engagement of the clamping members upon the box ends and the partition yields sufliciently to permit the box to be readily turned as the workmany is ready to nail an additional side, while at the same time collapse of the structure is prevented. Should it happen that a box end `inserted in one of the clamps is somewhat thinner than the adopted for the clamp, a block of any convenient material or form may be inserted between the rear ends ofthe clamping plates so that the plates will be caused to rock laterally relative to the posts upon which they are mounted and the front ends of the plates thereby caused to lirmly grip the box end. It will be noted, more par- -icularly upon reference to Fig. l, that the rods 32 are threaded at one end and secured in the end frames by nuts mounted on the rods and turned home against the bars 25 and 2G. l am thus enabled to readily withdraw the said rods if the device is to be out of Ause vfor any considerable period and the space occupied by the apparatus when it is set up may be utilized for other purposes, it being noted that the bench is secured to the end frames by bolts and the material-supporting shelf is also secured to the end frames by bolts so that the parts may be verypeasily disassembledand stored in a smal space.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: y
l. ln an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination of end frames, a bench supported by and between said end frames, supporting members extending between the end frames, posts mounted on said .supporting members above the bench, and box end engaging clamp carried by said posts.
2. ln an app-aratus for the purpose set forth, the combination of a bench, postssupported above the bench, and box-end-engaging members carried by said post-s and adjustable yvertically and horizontally thereon.
3. In an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination of a bench, posts supported above the bench, clamping plates disposed against the opposite sides of the posts and projectingv forwardly and rearwardly therefrom, and means supported by the posts for yieldably holding the clamping plates thereto and permitting horizontal adjustl ment of the plates forwardly and rearwardly relative to the post.
4. ln an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination of a bench, posts supported above the bench, clamping plates arL ranged against the opposite sides of the posts and projecting forwardly therefrom and provided with longitudinal slots,` securing bolts inserted through the said slots of the clamping plates and through the posts, and springs coiled around thebolts and acting upon the outer sides of the clamping plates to hold the plates to the posts and permit adjustment of the same horizontally across the posts.

In an apparatus for the purposeset forth, the combination of a bench, posts supported above.` the bench, clamping plates disposed against the opposite sides of the posts and provided with longitudinal slots andlf havinO sockets in their outer faces orri oin T n i es l u ywashers disposed against the outer faces of the clamping plates upon each post and having projections engaging the sockets in the outer faces of the clamping plates, headed bolts inserted through the said gripping washers and the slots in the clamping plates and through the post-s upon which the plates are mounted, springs disposed about the bolts between the heads thereof and the coacting gripping washer, nuts mounted uponthe ends of the bolts, and springs coiled about the bolts between said nuts and the coacting gripping washer.
6. ln an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination of a bench, vertically spaced rods supported above the bench and extending from end to end thereof, posts slidably fitted upon said rods, means carried by the posts to engage said rods and hold the posts in a set position, and box-end-engaging friction clamps carried by each of said posts. i

In an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination of a bench, rests secured upon the bench and extending from front to rear thereof, said rests being provided with transverse grooves and slots opening through the bases of the grooves, and clamping stop plates adjustably supported in the said grooves and provided at their inner opposed ends with upstanding lugs.
8. In an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination of end frames, a bench supported by said end frames, bracing bars secured to the end frames and extending from front to rear thereof, means carried by said bars for supporting boxholding members above the bench, extensions carried by the upper bars, standards carried by the rear ends of the extensions, a rail resting on said extensions and against the said standards, and a shelf supported by said extensions between the end frames and the said rail.

In an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination of end frames, a bench supported by and between the end frames, bracing bars secured upon the end frames and extending from front to rear thereof, upper and lower rods securedto and extending between said bracing bars at the opposite ends of the bench, posts adjustably mounted upon said rods, and box-end-engagino clamps carried by said posts.
10. In an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination of corner posts, a bench supported by said posts and adjustable vertically thereon, rods supported by the posts above the bench and extending from end to end of the bench, posts carried by said rods, and box-end-engaging clamps carried by said posts.
11. In an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination of end frames, a
- bench supported by and between said end frames, bracing bars secured to the end framesy and extending from front to rear thereof, box-holders supported above ,the bench. by said bracing bars, and a shelf carried by the upper bracing bars at the rear of the end frames.
12. In an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination of end frames, a
bench supported by and betweensaid endv frames, bracing bars secured to the end frames and extending from front to rear thereof, box-holders supported above the bench by said bracing bars, extensions mounted upon the end frames. and projecting rearwardly therefrom, projections on the front ends of said extensions engaging under the upper bracing bars, and a shelf carried by the rear portions of said extensions.

In an apparatus for the purpose `set forth, the combination of a support-ing frame, upright members on the frame, boxend-engaging plates disposed against the sides of the upright members and extending forwardly'and rearwardly therefrom, and yieldable means holding the plates to the upright members and permitting limited rocking movement of the plates in horizontal planes whereby the rear ends of the plates may be forced apart to cause the front ends thereof to engage and hold work.
14. In an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination of a supporting frame, upright members on said frame, boxend-engaging plates ydisposed against the sides of the upright members and extending forwardly and rearwardly therefrom, and
movement of the plates transversely of the upright members and also permitting adjustment of the plates forwardly and rearwardly.
15. In an apparatus for the purpose set forth, the combination of a supporting frame, posts thereon, box-end-engaging plates arranged against the sides of the posts, said plates being provided with longitudinal slots and with sockets in their outer faces, washers tted against the plates and having projections selectively engaging said sockets, bolts inserted through the washers, the posts, and the slots in the plates, and means carried by the bolts to maintain the washers in engagement with the plates.
