INV EN TOR.
A TTORNEYS' CORTEZ MEER-ILL, 0F OEL-WEIN, IOWA.
norman srorrnn.
Application filed January 27, i921. y Serial No. 440,443.
To all 'wiwi/z t may concern.' f
Be it known that I, Conrnz Mannini., a citizen of the United States, residing kat Oelwein, in the county of Fayette and State of Iowa, have invented certain new andk useful Improvements in Bottle Stoppers;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itA appertains to make and usethesame.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bottle Stoppers and more particularly to what will be known hereinafter as a cork or stopper particu-v larly adapted for use on thermos bottles and the main object of the present invention 1s the provision of a cork or stopper which is not only used for closing the bottle butv constructed so that the same can be used as a cup or receptacle for receiving the contents of the bottle so that the owner of the bottle canV readily consume the contents from the cup portion of the stopper.
Another object of this invention is the v provision of a bottle stopper including an aluminum, metallic or composition body provided upon its exterior rsurface with a composition coating which will readily engage the interior of a bottle neck when in` serted therein so that the cork yor stopper of the stopper forms a liquidtight closure.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a cork or bottle stopper having a hollow aluminum, metallic or composition body portion provided upon its exterior surface `with a plurality of dovetailed ridges and having a coating of cork or rubber composition arranged over these ridges,` the coating being pressed beneath the dove-tailed portions of the ridges so that the coatingwill be readily retained in position upon the exterior of the body.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May f6, 1922.
forth, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l isa side elevation of a cork or bottle stopper constructed in accordance with my invention;
F 2 is a vertical' sectional view; and, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view ofthe metallic body, a portion of the same being broken away and rillustrated in cross section showing the application ofthe coating thereto.
In the construction of my improved cork or stopper l providea metallic body generally indicated by the numeral l which is preferably cup-shaped as shown in Fig. 2 and provided around its top edge with a reinforced flange 2. The body of the cup is provided upon its exterior with a plurality of circumferentially arranged clove-tailed ribs 3. rlhese dove-tailed ribs are not only arranged circumferentially of the side walls of the body, but also upon the bottom of the same as shown in Fig. 3. It will be noted in Fig. 2 vthat the flanged portion 2 projects outwardly beyond the face of the ribs 3 and in order to form a smooth and unbroken surface upon the exterior of the body, a coating of any desired composition may be applied thereto as shown at 4L, said coating being forced into the spaces between the ribs 3 and as illustrated in Fig. 2, the outer rib at the bottom of the body member is provided With a plurality of inclined openings as shown at 5 whereby the coating material can be readily pressed into these openings so that the coating material will be held in position upon theexterior of the body. y
Attention is also directed to the' fact that the circumferential ribs upon the bottom of the body of the cup are provided with radial extending openings 6 into which the coat* ing or composition will be pressed so' as to assist the dove-tailed ribs .iny retaining the composition in position upon the body-of the cup. v
I wish it to be understood that any suitable material can be used in the construction of the body of the stopper which forms the cup portion 7 and that any desirable composition can be used upon the exterior of the `body such as a cork composition, rubber ign-ate this cork or stopper as preferably used in connection with thermos bottles, it will be readily apparent that the same can be used in connection with any liquid oontainer.
It is a well known fact that the contents of thermos bottles which are placed in the bottles in a heated state and during the cooling of the contents Create a vacuum within the bottle which tends to draw the cork toward the interior of the bottle, and it will be noted that by providing the flange 2 at the outer or open end of the stopper this flange will engage the top of the neck ot the bottle and prevent the cork from being drawn inwardly.
I claim as my invention:
1. A bottle stopper including a hollow body member having` an annular flange at its open end, a plurality of ribs arranged oiroumferentially of the body upon its side walls and bottom portion, the outerlace of said ribs terminating` short of the flange on the body, and Composition matter pressed into the body to a thickness of the space between the outer edge of the flange and the faces of the ribs to provide a smooth uniform surface.
2. A bottle stopper including a hollow cup-shaped body, an annular flange formed at its open end, a plurality of dovestailed ribs formed oireumferentially upon the exterior of the body, said ribs being disposed around the side walls and bottom of the body7 the ribs on the side of the body portion terminating short of the outer face of the llange, and a coating of composition matter pressed onto the body and adapted to lill the space between the outer face of the flange and the outer faces of the ribs7 portions of said ribs being provided with the transverse openings to receive the composition mattei' and retain the coating in its respectiveposition upon the exterior of the body.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature. 45
