MARY L. LITTLE, OF LOS' ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
FRUIT FUNNEL.
a eioi.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY L. LITTLE, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fruit Funnels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a filling funnel of a special design which makes it particularly adaptable as an aid in filling fruit jars and other such containers with fruit, preserves and the like; the object being to provide a "funnel as large as will fit into the mouth of a standard size of fruit having a suitable bib or tray extension from its rim outwardly for catching dripp-ings which may :(all from the ladle or spoon used in filling the jar.
A further object being to afford a certain construction relative to the mouth of the jar and a balanced condition of the device when mounted on a air that will permit it to be inclined in such a way that the 'drippings which may fall upon the tray will drain into or away "from the jar as may be desired.
With reference to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the entire device as it would appear when mounted on a jar, the jar being shown in dotted lines. v
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the device showing the embodiment of an extended portion of a wire handle into an edge structure of a tray.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the device shown in an inclined position which would cause any drippings falling upon the tray to drain away from the jar.
Figure at is another side elevation of the device shown in an inclined position which would cause any drippings falling upon the tray to drain into the jar.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a screen properly formed to fit into the bottom of the funnel.
More specifically 1 indicates a funnel having a downwardly projecting discharge orifice 2.
3 represents a wire handle for the funnel so formed and extended as to also form a stiffening side member for a tray. A bib or tray t is formed in one piece with the Specification of Letters ?atent. Patented jfiay 16 1922 Application filed. August 4-, 1919.

body of the funnel and extending outwardly therefrom, having its edges tightly bent around the extended portion of the wire handle 3 thus forming an upraised edge therefor and having its outer end bent downwardly forming a drip edge 5. I
The back side of the funnelproper, i. e., the side opposite to the tray, is carried up somewhat above'the top edge of the funnel forming a member which gives to the rim a proper height on its back side when the device is inclined as shown in Figure '-l-.
The form-and the diameter of the lower part of the funnel is such that the device is properly held in the mouth of the jar when the tray is inclined to either side.
In. the use of the device when mounted upon the jar or other container to be filled, with the tray extended outwardly towards the operator, the fruit or other food stuffs may be dipped from the receptacle inwhich they have been prepared, with a ladle and passed into the ar through the funnel and all such drippings as may fall from the bottom of the ladlewill tall upon the tray and drain into the or into a separate receptacle in accordance with the inclination of the device and the wish of the operator, the back side of the funnel at all times preventing overflow of liquid on the opposite side of the tray.
Thus the unavoidable dripping of part of the liquor from the bottom of the ladle onto the side oil the jar and elsewhere causing a condition of uncleanliness is eliminated.
Where certain preserves and the like having an undesirable pulp content are to be filled into the jar the screen as shown in Figure 5 is fitted into the bottom of the funnel thereby holding back the undesirable pulp and allowing the liquor only to pass into the ar.
I claim:
In a filling -funnel adapted to be placed over the mouth of a receptacle and tilted thereon, the combination of a funnel having a raised side thereon and a wirehandle, and a tray for the funnel extending outwardly from the rim thereof, and having upraised sides, the wire handle having extended. members forming a part of the upraised edge structure of said tray.
