Be -itv known that we, EMIL A. PETERsoNf `and WILLIAM J. MCGINNis, citizens of the United States, and residents of Appleton, in of Outagamieand State of `Wis consin,` have invented new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Control Attach` ments for Beating, Bleaching, and'Washing Engines, of whichthe following vvis a description, reference being hadto'theaccompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements 1n hydraulic control attachments for beating and washing machines and refers more particularly to beating, bleaching and washing enginesespecially adapted for use in preparing stock in themanufacture of paper.
' The present devices now on the market for adjusting the beating roll and the washer employa jack screw which has proven veryunsatisfactory in that the movement of theroll. and washer from one position f to the. other is jerky and further that such a device lacks the flexibility required in a device of this character.
With these inherent objections in mind, our invention has for one of its objects to. provide hydraulic means for vertically adjusting the beating roll and washer ofk a paper pulp preparing machine which will have the desired flexibility and which will be ca-` pable of fine adjustment.
Another object of the present invention isy to provide hydraulic adjusting means for a beating roll which will have means for auto-A matically permittingthe pressure to escape therefrom as the stock becomes finer, and

All of the Vforegoing mentioned operation is well `known `in the art, and our invention resides .in the novel means employed for raising and` lowering` the beating roll 0r vrotor 7 and in adjusting thewasher 11 as herein- .after described.
Disposed adjacent each side of the con tainer l5 is `a pair of vertical supporting` standards 18 and 19 with which the levers lQareconnected. The standards 18 and 19 have their lower ends reinforced or enlarged as at 2O andftheadjacent standards 18 and 19. are connected together .at their lower portions byineans of a skeleton brace construcvtion 21 as best. shown in Fig. 1. yEach lever 10 has one end eXtended into its adjacent standard 18 through a slot or groove 22 and pivotally secured therein, as at 23,` and its other end projected into the adjacent standard 19 'through a slot or groove 24 and is connected, by means to be later' described,

2. ln a paper pulp machine, the combina# tion with a bed plate and a beatingy roll eoacting thereivithl to beat materials passing therebetween into a pulp, of hydraulic means for spacing `the beatingroll from the bed plate,` and means. for automatically adjusting the space between said beating roll and bed plate as the density of the materials being worked upon decreases.
3. ln a machine ci the class described, the combination with a bed plate and a beating roll coacting therewith, et fluid actuated means tor spacing the beating roll from the bed plate, means communicating said fluid actuated means with a source of uid supply to raise the roll, and means operable to disconnect said. source of fluid supply upon the upward movement of the roll a predetermined distance.
4. ln a machine of the class described, the combination with a bed plate and a beating roll coacting therewith, of fluid actuated means 'for spacing` the beating roll from the' bed plate, mea-ns communicating said fluid actuated means with a source of fluid supply to raise the roll, means operable to'cut off said source of fluid supply upon the roll reachinga predetermined height to limit its upward movement, and means independent ot the fluid actuated means for limiting the downward movement of the roll.

In a paper pulp machine, the combination with a bed plate and a beating roll coacting` therewith, of hydraulic -means lier spacing said beating roll from said bed plate, a control valve for operating the hydraulic means, and means connected with the control valve and operable upon a certain limit of movement of said beating roll to check the movement of said roll.
6. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a bed plate and a beating roll adjustably disposed thereover and coacting therewith tocomminute stock passed between, of fluid actuated means for spacing the beating roll from the bed plate, a supply pipe l'or the fluid actuated means, the .veight o'tsaid roll being supported partially by the stock passing between it and the bed plate f and partially by said fluid actuated means,
thepressure in. said supply pipe being in-v creased upon the density of the stoclr being decreased, and means operable upon the pressure in said supply line reaching a` predetermined amount to lower said roll.
7. In a machine of the class described, fluid actuated adjusting means for a beating roll, comprising a roll carrying member, a fluid actuated ram connected with said member to raise and lower the same, and means for actuating said ram to adjust the roll upon a change in the body density ot materials being worked upon by the roll.
8. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a bed plate and a beating roll adjustably disposed thereover and coacting therewith to comminute stock passed therebetween, of lluid actuated means for spacing the beating roll from the bed plate, a supply pipe for the luid actuated means, a drain pipe for the fluid actuated ing a pair of standards, a lever having one end pivoted to one of the standards and its other end slidably mounted in the other standard, a cylinder formed in the lower portion ot said other standard, a piston mounted in said cylinder and connected with the slidable end of the lev r, means for supplying fluid under pressure to the cylinder to move the piston and with it said lever, and means engageable by the slidable end of said lever, when it has reached a certain limit of movement, for cutting ofl` the supply of Huid to the cylinder.

In a machine ot the class described, fluid actuated adjusting means for a beating roll, comprising a pair of levers journally supporting medially of their ends a beating roll supporting shaft, a pair of standards supporting each lever, each lever having one end in pivotal engagement with one standard and its other end slidably supported within another standard, fluid actuated means connected with the slidably supported end ot each lever, means for connecting said fluid actuated means rwith a source of fluid supply to raise the beating roll, and means operable upon the slidably supported ends of the levers reaching a predetermined height to disconnect said source ol fluid supply.
11. ln a machine of the class described, the combination with a washer, of fluid actuated means for adjusting the washer, means for connecting said fluid actuated means with a source of fluid supply to adjust thewasher, and means for disconnecting said fluid supply upon the washer reaching a predetermined position of adjustment.
12. ln a paper pulp machine, the combination with a revoluble washer, of hydraulic means lfor vertically adjusting the revoluble washer, a control valve for operating the hydraulic means, and means connected with the control valve and operable upon a certain upward limit of movement of the revoluble washer to check the movement of the washer.
13. In a paper pulp machine, the combination with a washer, its supporting shaft and bearings, of a yoke member connected with the shaft bearings, and a hydraulic ram connected withk the yoke member for raising and lowering the same.
14. 'In a paper pulp machine, the combination lwith a washer, its supporting shaft, and bearings therefor, of adjusting rods having their lower ends engaged with said bearings,
a yoke member carried by the upper ends of kthe adjusting rods, a hydraulic ram connected with the yoke member, and control means for moving said ram vertically to adjust the washer.
15. In a paper pulp machine, the combination with a washer, its supporting shaft, and bearings therefor, of adjusting rods having their lower ends engaged with said bearings, a yoke member carried by the upper ends of the adjusting rods, a hydraulic ram connected with the yoke member, means for movingl the ramy vertically, and means operable when the washer has reached a certain limit of movement to check the movement of the ram.
16. In a paper pulp machine, a supporting frame including side washer posts and a transverse brace bar connecting` the upper ends of the washer posts, a cylinder centrally carried by the transverse brace bar of the supporting frame, a yoke member disposed adjacent the cylinder, a piston mounted in the cylinder and connected with the yoke member, means connecting the yoke member with the supporting shaft of a washer, and means for controlling fluid under pressure within ythe cylinder to raise and lower the piston.
17. In a paper pulp machine,asupporting frame including side washer posts and a transverse brace bar connecting the upper ends of the washer posts, a cylinder centrally carried by the transverse brace bar of the supporting frame, a yoke member disposed adjacent the cylinder, a piston mounted in the cylinder and connected with the yoke member, means connecting the yoke member with the supporting shaft of a washer, an intake kfor the cylinder for supplying iluid thereto under pressure to raise the piston, and a drain for the cylinder for releasing the pressure from the cylinder to lower the piston.
18. In a paper pulp machine, a supporting frame including side washer posts and a transverse brace bar connecting the upper ends of the kwasher posts, a cylinderk centrally carried by the transverse brace bar of the supporting frame, a yoke member disposed adjacent the cylinder, a piston mounted in the cylinder and connected with the yoke member, means connecting the yoke member with the supporting shaft of a washer, an intake for the cylinder for supplying iiuid thereto under pressure to raise the piston, a drain for the cylinder for releasing the pressure from the cylinder to lower the piston, and control valves for said intake and drain.
19. In a paper pulp machine, a supporting frame including side washer posts and` a transverse brace bar connecting the upper ends of the washer posts, a cylinder centrally carried by the transverse brace bar of the supporting frame, a yoke member disposed adjacent the cylinder, a piston mounted in the cylinder and connected with the yoke member, means connecting the yoke member with the supporting shaft of a washer, an intake for the cylinder for supplying Huid thereto under pressure to raise the piston, a drain for the cylinder for `releasing the pressure from the cylinder to lower the piston, control valves for said intake and drain, and means for closing said intake upon the movement of the yoke member to its upper limit of movement.
