WRENCH.
Application filed January'26, 1921.
ternal bore of a pipe or the like, the wrench being adjustable so as to operatively engage bores of different diameters.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench showin it received within a pipe before expanding the wrench to engage the bore of the pipe.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the wrench expanded to engage in the bore of i the pipe.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section ontheline' 3-3 of Fig. 1.
r Fig. 4 is a similarview on the line 4-4 of ig. 5 is a front end view of the wrench.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section through the same on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a transverse section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
In the drawings we have illustrated the Wrench as received Within the bore of a pipe 1 for threading the pipe'into or disengage it from a usual pipe coupling 2 having the pipe 3 attached to its opposite end.
The wrench-consists of a cylindrical mendber 4 having the bore 5. The rear end of the cylindrical member is enlarged as shown at 6, and is provided with a plurality of fiat faces 7 so that a wrench or thelike may engage the same for rotating the cylindrical member. This enlarged rear end portionof the cylindrical member is provided with an axial bore 8 of reduced diameter. The front end of'the cylindrical member is provided with a plurality of oircumferentially spaced slots 9 through which engag ng teeth 10 project. The outwardly projecting ends of these teeth are .preferably beveled as shown at 11 in order to form blades 12, which when the teeth are projected radially from the cylinder member will engage the Specification of Letters Patent.

internal bore of a pipe in order that subsequent rotation of the cylindrical member Wlll rotate the pipe.
he means employed for projecting and retracting-the teeth 10 includes an axially disposed rod 13 extending through the bore of the, cylindrical member and through the bore 8. The rear end of this rod is screwthreaded as shown at 14:, and a nut 15 is threaded upon this end of the rod, so as to abut against the rear end of the enlar ed portion 6 of the cylindrical member. this arrangement rotation subsequently reversely rotating the nut, the rod may be again projected beyond the front end of the cylindrical member.
The end of rod 13 which is received within the. front end of cylinder 4 is enlarged as shown at 16, so as to approximately fit the bore of the cylindrical member, and this enlarged end portion is provided with circumferentially spaced longitudinally extending slots -l7, in alinement with the respective teeth 10. These slots taper and are of greatest depth at their inner ends, and the shanks 18 oil the respective teeth are received in the slots. As a result it will be seen that when. rod 13 is projected beyond the front end of cylinder 4, the teeth 10 are free to be retracted within the cylinder, since the shanks of the teeth deep ends of slots l7.- The wrench-in this position is projected into the pipe which it is to engage, andn-ut 15 is then rotated so as to retract rod 13 within thetront end of cylinder 4, and thus project teeth 10 outwardly from cylinder 4 as the portions of slots 17 of decreasing depth engage the teeth. It will be noted that the ends of the shank engaging the bases of slots '17 are inclined as shown at 20 so as to abut throughout their lengths against the bases of the slots. By this arrangement the teeth may be forced into engagement with the internal bore of the pipe to herotated, and by then rotating cylinder it, the pipe may be removed from 'a coupling ,or the like to which it is attached.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed. I
What is claimed is:
A wrench comprising a hollow memare received in the ber having circumferentially spaced slots formed therein, a rod Within and movable longitudinally of the member, said rod having a threaded end and an enlarged end, said enlarged end being formed with circumferentially spaced slots tapering in depth, teeth having blades disposed Within said slots and shanks slidably fitted in said lots, and a nut engageable with the threaded end of the rod for moving the latter longi- 10 tudinally for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification.
GEORGE W. THOMAS. HARVEY L. SCOTT.
