IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR MANUFACTURING-PLUG-TOBACCO.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J oHN L. JONES, of Oxford, inrthe county of Granville and in the State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine for Manufacturing Plug-Tobacco 5 and do hereby declare that the following is a full', clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a machine for forming the lumps of tobacco preparatory to wrapping and pressing the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a plan view, Fig. 3 a longitudinal vertical section,

and Fig. 4 a transverse vertical section, of my machine. Fig. 5 shows a part of the trough with its fixtures in enlarged dimensions.

A represents the frame-work of my machine, on the bed of which are two adjustable guidebars, B B. Between these guide-bars is placed the trough O, in which the cased tobacco-leaves are laid to any depth or thickness desired.

' In the bottom of the trough O is rst placed a plate, a. The tobacco-leaves are then laid on said plate,and another plate, b,laid on top of the tobacco. This latter plate is, at regular intervals on the under side, provided with knives d to cut the tobacco in the desiredsized plugs or lumps. l These knives pass down into slots or grooves made in the lower plate a. For different widths of plug different troughs are used, the guides B B being movable for that purpose. Above the guides B B, and parallel with them, are two rails, E E, which are grooved longitudinally on their inner sides, and in and between said rails slides a frame, G, which contains a wheel, D, of such width as to go into the trough G. The journals of this wheel are placed in boxes e c which slide vertically up and down in dovetailed grooves on the inside of the frame G. The sides of the wheel D are provided with shoulders or anges ff a suitable dist-ance from the circumference, sothat when the wheel enters the trough C it can only sink down a certain distance or until the shoulders or flanges ff touch and rest upon the edges of the trough. At the inner end of the trough C, on the bed of the machine, is a rest or stop, H, upon which the wheel D runs and remains while one trough is removed and another placed in position.

The trough O being filled, as above described, and placed between the guides B B,the frame G with the wheelD is moved forward, by a rope or other suitable means, to the front end of the trough, and then back again upon the rest H. This movement of the wheel packs the tobacco, and by the knives d cuts it the proper length, thus forming the tobacco into proper lumps or plugs, ready to be put through the usual processes of wrapping or capping and pressing.

The wheel D may be made of any weight desired, but I have found that one weighing l from four to six hundred pounds will be suicient for all practical purposes.

If necessary the guide-rails E E may be made adjustable up and down, so that a tire or band may be put on the wheel D when very thin work is required.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination of the trough C, slotted plate a, and the plate b with knives el, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The wheel D provided with shoulders or flanges, f f, and placed in up-and-down movable boxes in a horizontally-moving frame or carriage, for the purposes herein set forth.
