WALTER H. GROVE, OF TYRONE, PENNSYLVANIA.
TREAD MEMBER FOR ANTISKIDDING DEVIGES.
araees.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. GROVE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Tyrone, inthe county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Tread Mem- 1 bers for Antiskidding Devices, of which the use.
following is a specification, .reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in tread members for anti-skidding devices and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which can be readily and conveniently assembled and effectively ap lied in working position.
1 nother object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character embodying a plurality of separable sections provided with means whereby said sections may be quickly and conveniently applied or separated and which is of particular advantage in replacing a section in the event the same should become unduly worn or otherwise rendered unfit for The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved tread member for anti-skidding devices whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more con.-
venient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. 7 The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure -1 is a view partly in'section and partly in elevation illustrating a tread member constructed in accordance with an. embodiment of my invention and in applied position;
Figure 2'is a view in plan of one of the separable sections comprised in my improved Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1922.
Application filed February 25, 1922. Serial No. 539,178.
ings, M denotes a tread member in its entlrety constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and which is divided into a plurality of separable sections.
The major number of the sections 1 are constructed in duplicate while one of the end sections 1 is of'a different construction, the purposes of which will be hereinafter set forth.
Each of the sections 1 comprises an elongated loop formed of preferred material and which has its side members substantially in parallelism. The central portions of the side members of each of the loops are extended outwardly, as at 2, to provide opposed recesses, each of said recesses being substantially V-shaped in form with their apices oppositely directed.
An end portion of'each of the sections 1 is provided with an upstandin shank '3 which is of a diameter substantially equal to the space between the side members of a section. The shank 3 terminates in a head 4 preferably pyramidal in form with the dimensions of its base in excess of the space between the parallel members of a section 1 ut readily insertible through the portion of the section provided with the recesses 2.
The margins of the base of the head 4 are preferably disposed on angles of substantially 15 with respect to the longitudinal axis of the section 1 so that in order to connect or separate coacting sections 1,
ortions of the side said sections must be turned into substan- I tially right angular relation, as is clearly illustrated inFigure 3 of the accompanying drawings. nected sections 1 are substantially longitudinally alined, the head 1 of one section will move to the end portion of the second section 1 remote from the end portion of said second section provided with the head 4 whereby adjacent sections are effectively locked one to the other.
The section 1 is of substantially the same construction as each of the, sections 1 except that it is not provided with the outstanding shank and associated head. The section 1 and the section 1 remote therefrom are adapted to be connected or coupled to the side chains or members C by the links 5. Each ,of the links 5 has its opposite end portions provided with the split eyes 6, one of said eyes being interlocked with a side member or chain C and When the adjacent or conmove a link 5.
or other surface, in a manner to materially In practice, with the use of my improved member M, and which are adapted to be employed in any number which is believed to best comply with the requirements of practies, the heads 4 will penetrate the roadway,
increase the traction of the wheel and at the same time effectively serve to prevent slippage or skidding. The heads 4 also prolong the life of a member M as said heads compensate for excessive wea Should the head 4 of a section 1 become unduly worn or a section 1 in any way be- I come unfit for use, the same can be readily and conveniently removed and replaced with a new section. This is of particular advantage in a device of this character.
From the foregoing description it isthought to be obvious that a tread member for anti-skidding devices constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do ,not wish to" be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A tread member for non-skidding devices comprising a plurality of inseparable sections, each of said'sections being in the form of an elongated loop, the side member of each of the sections substantially midway of the length thereof being spaced apart a distance greater than the space between the remaining portions of the arms,
the end portion of one of the sections be- 1 ing provided with through a second section and a head cara shank insertable ried by the outer end of said shank, said head being insertable through the increased space between the center portion of the side members of a second section, the major diameter being greater than the width between the remaining portions of the side members. i r
2. A tread member for a non-skidding device comprisinga plurality of inseparable sections, each of said sections being in the form of an elongated loop, the side members of said loop at opposed pointsbeing extended outwardly to provide" recesses, an end portion of said section having an outstanding shank terminating in a head, said head being of a size to be"in sertable through the increased space afiorded by the recess and of a diameter greater than the width between the remaining portions of the side members.
3. A tread member for anon-skidding device comprising a plurality of inseparable sections, each of said sections being in the form of an elongatedloop, the sidemembersof said loop at opposed points being extended outwardly to provide recesses, an
endportion of said section having an outstandin shank terminating in a head, said head being of a size to be insertable through the increased space afforded by therecess and of a diameter greater than the width between the remaining portions of the side members, said head being pyramidal.
fl. A tread member fora non-skid'ding'de I vice comprising a plurality of inseparable sections, each of said sections being in the form of an elongated loop, the side members of said" loop at opposed points being extended outwardly to provide recesses; an end WALTER H. GROVE.
