LAMP-BASE EXTBACTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1922.
Application illed October 2,2, 1921. Serial No. 509,537.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that OLAF JOHAN SwANsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chappaqua, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, has invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Base Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eicient means for extracting a broken lamp base or plug from the socket in which'it is fitted and which ordinarily resists removal, there being no ordinary household tools or utensils which are adapted for engaging such a device and effecting its disengagement from the socket with facility; and furthermore to provide a tool for the purpose indicated which may be produced at a relatively small cost and may be conveniently and effectively used by the householder or consumer without any special knowledge of mechanics or of the use of tools; and with this' object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings; wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plug or base extractor embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same arranged in operative relation with the plug or base of a broken lamp.
The tool consists essentially of a shank 10 of pronged construction having the arms 11 adapted for terminal insertion into the plug or base of the lamp and for terminal en gagement with the inner surface of the wall of said plug or base. The inner or facing surfaces of the arms forming the prong are convergently disposed from their free ends toward their junction with the shank and adapted for arrangement and movement between the arms is a key 12, preferably of tapered form as shown so that any desired portion of the length thereof may be disposed between the arms to suit the diameter of the plug or base. By drawing the key toward the closed end of the slot between the arms, or away from the plug or base, without inserting the extremities of the arms into the plug or base, said extremities may be forced tightly into contact and engagement with the inner surface of the plug or base so that by turning the shank it may be accomplished by using the key as a lever, the plug or base may be unscrewed from the socket.
Preferably the key is fiexibly attached to the shank as by a cord or like connection 13, of which the terminals may be engaged with suitable openings 14 and 15 in the key and shank.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is A tool for removing broken lamp plugs or bases having a pronged shank of which the arms are adapted for insertion within the plug or base and are provided with convergent facing surfaces, and a key for spreading the arms to cause engagement thereof with the wall of the plug or base, the key being disposed transversely of the shank to form a handle by which the latter may be turned to unscrew the plug or base.
In testimony whereof he aixes his signature.
OLAF JOHAN SWANSON.
