DETACHABLEHHANDLE non PANS AND'KET'TLEVS. f
Application filed'June 2,
T 0 all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN J. KIR-BY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Susanv1lle, in the county of Lassen and State, of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable -Handles for Pans and Kettles; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such-as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient handle for use in connection with cooking and like culinary vessels such as pans, kettles and the like which, being constructed separately from the vessel, and adapted to be removed therefrom during the time that the vessel is on the stove or during the cooking operation, is readily applicable to the same when it is de- I sired to move, lift or remove the vesselfrom the stove, and which may not only be attached and detached with facilityand with out loss of time, but which when secured in place is locked against any reasonable possibility of accidental removal involving the dropping of the vessel; and with these objects in view the inventionconsists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawing, wherein: 1 i
Figure 1 is a view of a handle embodyingthe invention applied in the operative position to a cooking vessel. 1
Figure 2 "is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Figures 3 and i are vertical sectional views on the planes indicated by the lines 3-3 of Figure 2, showing the locking elements re spectively in their extended or engaging and in their retracted or disengaging position.
i The handle consists essentially of a grip 10 having a head member 11 terminating in a depending bearing plate 12, which is adapted for reception by a keeper 13 which is rigidly attached as by rivets 14 to the kettle or vessel 15, said keeper being provided at its lower edge with an outwardly projecting seat 15 for the reception'of the lower end of a diagonal brace 16 extending from the inner end of thehead 11 to the plane of the lower edge of the bearing plate 12. In the construction illustrated the brace isconstructed of heavy wire or rod made of looped form with a transverse bearing elel Specification of Letters Patent.
ment .16 to rest in the seat. 15 when the bearlng plate or member 12 is fittedinthe keeper.
The preferably having a removablejouter or rear wall 12 secured in place by swagedf lugs 12", and within said bearing plate or member arearranged transversely movable locking, members 17, of generally looped form with the terminals 18 thereof constituting bolts which project lateral-1y through guide openings 19 in the side walls of the member for engagement with corresponding openings20 in the endv walls of the keeper'l3. The locking members are movable transversely as above indicated to either extend bearingplate or member is, hollow, l
or retract the terminals constituting the locking bolts, and in the construction illus' trated the means .for effecting this move; ment of'the locking members consistsof pivotal levers 21 mounted at 22 within the,
casing'formed by the bearing plate or member, connectedwith keepers 23 on the locking ,memberspand having their upper free ends projected through a transverse slot 24 in the upper wallof the casingand engaged by the cam slot'25 in a slide26 which is mounted upon the head of the handle by means .of headed studs 27 engagingav lon gitudinal slot 28 therein. The cam slot 25 consists of outwardly or rearwardly' divergent portions or elements whereby as the" slide is moved forward or inward toward the V vessel the extremities of the operating levers are spread to correspondingly extend the bolt elements of the locking members to effect engagement with the openings 20 in the side walls of the keeper 13 and'thereby lock the the grip 10 with a thumbhold or ear29 by which the slide be manipulated, so. that when the bearing member is slipped into place in the keeper a slight movement ofthe '7 provided at'its outer or rear end adjacent to thumb of the hand grasping the gripflwill serve to position the slide to efiect the locking of the handle to the vessel, and "areverseg movementoflthe thumb applied to the slide will result-indisengaging the handle to permit of its removal, so that the handle does not become heated by reason of the cooking of the contents of the vessel.
Correspondingly to effect the removal of the cover or lid of the vesselthe outer or rear end of the handle is provided with a fork 30, and therefore the necessity of using cloths or means of protecting the hands of the operatorin manipulating the vessels or in removing the covers thereof is eliminated together with the unsanitary disadvantages of such procedure.
Having. thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A detachable handle for vessels having a keeper secured to the vessel, a grip having a terminal bearing member to fit in said keeper, laterally movable locking bolts carried by the bearing member for engage ment with seats in the side walls of the keeper, and means for extending and retracting said locking bolts.
2. A detachable handle for vessels having a keeper secured to the vessel, a grip having a terminal bearing member to fit in said keeper,
laterally movable locking bolts carried by the bearing member for engagement with seats in the slde walls of the keeper, and means for extending and retracting said locking bolts, the keeper being provided with a transverse bearing seat and the grip being provided with a downwardly and inwardly inclined bracing member for engagement with said seat when the bearing member is in engagement with the keeper.
3. A detachable handle'for vessels having a keeper secured to the vessel, a grip having a terminal bearing member to fit in said keeper, laterally movable locking bolts carried by the bearing member for engagement with seats in the side Walls ofthe'v keeper, and means for extending and retracting said locking bolts, and consisting of levers connected with said bolts and a slide provided with a cam slot for operating the levers.
4. A detachable handle for vessels having a keeper secured to the vessel, a grip having a terminal bearing'member to fit insaid keeper, laterally movable locking bolts carried by the bearing member for engagement with seats in the side walls of thekeeper, and means for extending and retracting sald locking bolts consisting of levers connected with the bolts and a manually movable slide having cam slots for operating the levers.
5. A detachable handle for vessels having a keeper secured to the vessel, a grip having a terminal bearing member to fit in said keeper, laterally movable locking bolts carried by the bearing member for engagement with'seats in the sidewalls of the keeper, and means for extending and retracting said locking bolts, said locking bolts consisting of the terminals of looped locking members, and the means for operating the same .consisting of levers pivoted at one end, connected'at intermediate points to said locking members and a slide movable longitudinally of the grip and having a slot with diverg-g ently disposed portions for respectively re ceiving the free ends of said levers.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
JOHN J. KIRBY.
Witnesses I i J. E. PARDEE, R. M. HARDY.
