The present invention is illustrated heregenerally be described as of theflarbetter type which comprises a'bed plate 1, preferably provided with an upwardly pro ecting boss 2, formin the base for a standard 3 which carries t e usual overhanging arm 4 and head 5. The main shaft 6 is journalled in suitable bearings in-the standard and arm and is driven by a pulley 7 which may be clamped 'upon "the shaft by .the screw 8 or releasedtherefrom to permit the pulley to run freefor winding bobbins.
The head carries the needle actuating mechanism and complementa'l' stitch forming mechanism and as illustrated herein comprises a needle supporting-arm 9 pivotally mounted upon a shaft 10 in the upper portion otthe head, the lower end of the needle supportin arm bein bifurcated to provide journalsll for a needle bar 12 carryg The needle bar may-be and is oscillated through a link 13 actuated from the main shaft and connected to an arm 14 extending trom the needle bar. A lateral or sho'ggin movement is imparted to the needle through a cam 15 connected by a link 16 to the needle supporting arm 9.
by a gear 17 actuated from a companion gear 18 on the main shaft.
The take-up mechanism may be of any suitable character and is not illustrated herein. i
The complemental stitch forming mechanism preferably comprises a rotating loop taker located in a bracket 19 depending from the head of the machine. The hook bracket 19 also carries a presser foot 20 with which a vertically movable work support 21 co operates. This work support is preferably that used in the well known typeof Arbetter machine and: need not be illustrated herein as it forms no essential part of the present invention. i The work presenting mechanism may comprise any suitable form of mechanism for advancing the goods and any suitable bender mechanism with which my invention may be associated. Inasniuch as the work Feeding mechanism has no connection with the present invention, no specific form of feeding mechanism has been illustrated herein.
The preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated herein comprises a bender 22 which is rigidly secured to one end of a bender supporting member 23 which preferably is pivoted at its opposite end upon a shaft or pin 24 which is mounted in the lower portion of the boss 2 which extends upwardly from the bed plate so that the pivotal point of the bender supporting mom her is substantiall upon a level with the normal position oi the end ofthe bender.
The length of. the bender supporting member preferablyl is such that theworlrengaga ing end of t e bender Will--move substan tially normal to the plane of the bed plate and work support.
As illustrated herein which is rigidly secured by screws 26-190 the end of the header supporting-member 23; suitable dowel pins 27 being also employed the bender is L i shaped in form .having an extension .75
to provide a more rigid construction be tween the bender and its supporting memher. 1
The bender supporting member '23 is re ciprocated by a bender actuating inember l for reciprocating said actuating on the same shaft which engages oppositely dispose ways upon said actuating lever. UTheb'ender actuating end with alaterally extending boss 29 in which an adjusting screw ii0 is'seutedgrsaid adjusting screw being provided with "an extension 31 of decreased diameter which passes freely through an car 32 projecting from the bender supportin member beneath the boss 29. The lower end of thescrew threaded portion provides a shoulder 33 which may be adjusted down wardly to engage the ear32 of the bender supporting member and serve as an adjustment for the height to which the" bender adjusted for different thicknesses of goods, the uppermost elevation of the bender being limited by the contact of the ear,32 with th boss 29 so that the bender cannot be raised into the path of the needle. i The yieldable connection between the bender supporting member and the bender actuating lever may be located in any desired position but preferably is in proximity to the bender.
In the construction disclosed herein the bed plate is provided with a cup shaped recess 34 through which the end of the ad justing screw 30 extends, said screw being lever 28'is provided at its opposite" be raised so that the bender may be I provided with a knurled nut 35 by means of i extended hub 44' which a suitable set screw or a tapered co-op'eratingf The actuatin' lever 28 is provided with laterally extent ing ears or flanges 40, '41 to which Wear plates 42, 43a secured and the cam 36 fits closely withinthe space between said wear plates 42 43 so that the actuator, and consequently the bender, is given a positive movement in both the up? ward and downward directions and the range of movement of the bender thereby accurately determined The cam 36 has an is secured, to the shaft 37 b pin 45. he shaft 37 is rotatedthroughe train of iears comprising a rmtre gear 46 having a ub 47 secured to the shaft 37 and gear 48 having a hub 4=9 Se-- cured toa s mft 50 extending longitudinally of the'machine. The shaftjfitl'i's' j'ournalleft] in suitable bearing-s 51am] 5 2 seeuredto the under face of the bed plate and upon its 'end is providediwith an arm T lt-which is connected by e lin'lt 5 4 to anirrni 55 upon the end of a shaft 56 which is mounted in suitable bearings 57, 58 secured to the under side of the bed late. p
The axis of t'e shaft 56 preferably ex tends parallel to but is offset from the axis ofthe shaft 50, and the arms 53, 55 and link 54 are of such length and construction as to give the bender shaft 50 a difier'e'n'tial rotation relatively to the shaft '56.. Byrezr son of this-construction the bender cam '36 is'given a relatively long (lwellduring the time the bender raises the'work to present it to the needle and also during the time in which the bender is depressed to permit the feeding-forward of the work.
Furthermore by this construction the bender is quickly removed from the path of the feedingmechanism and all interference between the bender andfeeding mechanism avoided. l H
The shaft 56 is rotated through a spiral gear 59 which is. engaged by El. complementary spiral gear 60 upon the lower end; of u shaft 61 which is journalled in hearings in the standard and has :xtits upper end a bevelled gear (32 engaging a complementary gear 63 upon the main shaft of the machine.
