Theobject of this invention is to provide a. simple and efficient'dumping body which may be easily handled :tor quick discharge of the load. 1
Briefly the invention comprises-stationary transverse members of'a frame having the ends thereof on an lncllnation wlth hooks at the lowermost points. The movablportion of the body-comprises transverse members through which extend longitudinally disposed rods which bear upon the? tops of saidstationary transverse members and are" movable from end to'end thereof.-
The mov-. able transverse members carry the dump ing'b'ody, and meansv areprovided for ma-- nipulating cables connected with said rods so that the body may be moved fromvside to side, said movement being limited by said hooks. A latch is provided for retaining the body in upright position when carry ing a load, and the sides of the body are hinged both at top and at bottom, so that said sides may be swung from either point.

The movable body comprises transverse timbers 16, connected to longitudinally'ex tending side rails 18, the latter carrying the prion.

and also swingi'nglsides24 A' pair of rods 26 extends longitudinally through the transverse timbers16 from endto end of the body,-these rods being provided with sprockets 28 over which achain 30 "passes. The rear ends-of therods may be squared "as at 32, to receive a crank 34 for-turning either of-said rods, one rod being turnedby the other through the medium of the chain 30; One'rod has" a cable 36'connected thereto and wound therearound, with itsopposite end connected to the timber 10 on the opposite side ofthetruckframework. The other rod is provided with a similarly "connected cable 38,- connected with the opposite timber 5 '10. The rods 26 are I providedwith rollers 40, which travel alongthe tops ofthesta,
tionary' transverse members 12.!
In-order'to retainthe dumping'body ine upright position, certain. or" the timbers 16 on the movable-body areprovided with brackets42, between'which a movable latch 44 is pivoted, the lower: endof'the latch be; ing opposite and adapted toenter a notch'46 in a retaining member 48, secured to the stationary. transverse members 12 below. -The latches 44 are'operated by means'of lever arms 50 and a. longitudinally extending cable 52.
The lower edges of the side walls 24 are hingedly connected with the dumping body by means'of eyes 60 on straps 62, secured on the sides 24, and eyes 64 on the body. When the walls 24 are inclosed position, as in Figures 1 and 4, the eyes 60 and 64 are in alignment and are retained therein bymeans of pins 66, secured to a longitu'dinallyextending rod68, slidable in bearings 70, and operable by means of a handle 7 2 for moving into and out of operative position.
The upper hinge mountings for the walls 7 '24cOmpriseU-shaped brackets 74, which are 7' secured to the end members-22, as at '1' 6, and
are provided with transverse notches 78,
which receive pivoting stems 80, secured to I the walls 24, as indicated at 82. ,When the pivotin stems 80 are in position, as shown inFigs-6 and 7 they are retained by means of vertically positioned, headed. pins 84.
When these upperhingesare released, the
walls 24 may be swung outwardly on the hinges at 60 and 64. To limit the amount of such movement the brackets 7a are provided with offset notched lugs 86, adapted to receive links of a chain 88, connected at 90 with the pivoting stems 80.
In operation of the device, the movable body may be moved from upright position, either to one side or the other by turning one of the rods 26 with the crank 34: the rollers 40 moving along the transverse members 12 to a position as indicated in Fig. 5, where the hooks receive the corresponding rod 26 and prevent further movement. In
1 order to permit the body to be moved to this position, itis first necessary to pull the cable 52 to release the latches 44:, so that the body may move laterally. By moving the lever 72 the hinges at 60, 6 1, will be released to allow the respective side wall 24: to open, as shown in Fig. 5, and discharge the load. The crank may then be placed on the other red 26 and the body returned to upright position, the latches 44 being allowed then to re-ent-er the slots 46 in the retainers 48. In
order to prevent vertical movement of the body, the brackets 42 may be provided with ofi set lingers 1 12, which underlie the transverse portions of the retainers 48 on oppotwo chains 102 connected therewith at one end and provided at their other ends with hooks 10 1 to engage in eyes 106 in bell cranks 108 connected to operate the rods 68. The chains 102 a'e of such length that when the body approaches the limit of its lateral mo tion during discharge movement, the chain on the respective side is drawn taut, thereby moving the respective bell crank to reciprocate its rod 68 and withdraw the pins 66. When the body is righted, the lever 7 2 is used to return the pins 66.
However, when the upper edges of the sides 24 are to be lowered about the hinges 60, 64;, as pivots, the hooks 104 must be removed from eyes 106 to prevent operation of the bell cranks 108 and withdrawal of pins 66, which would result in collapse of the sides 24-.
I claim:
' In a dumping device having a framework and relatively stationary transverse members attached thereto, a body transversely movable on said transverse members and tiltable V thereon, doors on sald body member and means for automatically opening said doors at the bottom when the body tilts, said means consisting of a bar extending longitudinally of said body, hinges clcse to said bar, pivot pins in said hinges, means on said bar for moving said pivot pins out of engagement with one of said hinge members, a bell crank lever connected to said body, a
link connecting one end of said bell crank with said rod and chains connecting the other end of said bell crank to said frame work.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
