Be it known that I, ALFRED Graine, -a citizen of the United States, residing at, Elizabeth, in the county of Union' and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful linpi'ovemeiits in Article-Attaching Machines, of which the' vfollowing is a specification, reference being had thei'ein to the accompanying.drawings. 'V lleretofore, it has been the yusual practice to sew the labels tothe'fupper side "of the .fotki-1nd, in order to properlyhold a label in sewing position, anV uppertwo-part telescopic presser-foot was generally used; the outer part having` narrow inwardly directed ledge at its `lower end against Vwhich the u'iarginal `portions of v.the label were clamped by the "inner pait of the presserfoot. For the purposes of the present disclosure, the invention is illustrated as embodied in a machine of the type represented in said Sullivan patent. Such a machine comprises a bed 1, standard 2, and bracket-arr 3 terminating in a hollow head 4 in which reciprocates the neeele-bar carryingthe eye-pointed needle 6; the latter `cooperating as usual with a suitable loop-taker or shuttle 7 stationed below the bed in the raceway 8 and receiving motion from the loop-taker shaft 9. rl`he machine is provided with the customary stop-motion device including the starting and stopping lever Awhich cooperates wit-h a stopping cam 11 on the hub of a pulley 12 fixed to the main-shaft 13. Disposed alongside the pulley 12 isa loose pulley 14 which receives the driving belt when the lever 1() springs to stopping position. Geared to the main-shaft 13 (is the usual pattern-wheel having in its opposite faces the cam-groove 13, 17, which operate through the usual connections such as disclosed in said Sullivan patent to impart longitudinal and lateral components of feeding motion to the work-holder supporting bar 18. The longitudinal components of motion are derived from the cam-groove 13 which vibrates the lever 19 about its pivot 20; the lever 19 having a slotted arm 21 embracing a vertically adjustable slide-block 22 on the post 23 rigidly mounted on the workholder supporting bar 18. The lateral coml ponente of motion of the work-holder are derived from the cam-groove 17 which rocks the lever 24 about its pivot 25. The lever 24 is connected by means of a link 26 to the slotted arm 27 of a bellCrank-lever pivoted at 28 to the under side of the bed 1. The other arm 29 of the bellcrank-lever is connected by means of a link 30 to the plate-like extension 31 of the head-piece 32-rigidly secured to the head 33 of the bearing pin 34 by means of the screw 35; the head 33 being formed with a diametrical slotf33, Fig. 12, which receives the rib 32 ofthe head-piece 32.
The bearing pin 34 is formed at its upper end with a reduced portion 36, Fig. 5, which enters' an aperture 37' in the forward free end of the work-holder supporting bar 18 and is rigidly secured in position by means of a nut 38 screwed into the further reduced and threaded extremity 39 of the pin 34. The work-holder supporting bar 18 swings about the axis of the post 23, Fig. 1, in performing its lateral components of motions.
rllhe label-support is preferably made in the form of a circular' disk 40, Fig. 2, rigidly secured to the seat 41, Figs. 5 and G, on the hub member yby means of circumferentiallyspaced screws, one of which is shown at 43. The hub-member 42 is ournaled for turning movement upon the pin 34 and is conlined against end play by means of the head 33 of said pin and the extremity of the bar 18. The label-supporting disk rests upon the flat upper surface of the hed 1 and is adapted to slide thereover in rigid relation with the bar 18 during the sewing operation.
' Referring to Figs. 2, 2n and 2b, it will be seen that the disk 40 is formed near its edge with a succession of label-receiving cavities each of which comprises a rectangular aperture` 44 in the disk 40. Extending along the sides and ends of the apertures 44. below the level of the upper surface of said disk, are the label-supporting Yledges Above the end-ledges are disposed the inwardly directed label-confining lips 46.

In order to prevent the label-carrying disk L troni being turned too far by its actuat` ing spring 6e, mechanism is provided 'for stopping said disk with the next label-seat in register with the presser-toot. Pivotally mounted at 91 on the escapement lever 59 is a bellcranl-;-lever, one arm 92 of which is formed with a circular head 93 adapted to i'it snugly within a notch 5G in the flange ot' the hub-member 42. rhe other arm 9/1 oi' the bellcrank-lever carries a. latch-pin 95 which is adapted to rest behind the lateral hook 96 on the latch-arm 97 pivoted at 98 to alateral extension 99 on the lever 59. The latch 97 is pressed into holding engageinentwith the pin 95 by means of the coil spring 100. During the sewing operation, the beiicranki-ever 92-9e is sustained at a level below that of the toothed ilange of the hub-member, as shown in Fig. 5. When the latch 97 is tripped, the bellcrank-lever 92, 911 is `free to swing about its pivot 91 from the position shown in Fig. to that shown in Fig. 16 under the influence of the light spring 100. rhis action advances the circular head 923 of the bellcrank-lever to a position such that it will be lifted into an adjacent notch 56 in the hub-member 12 when the escapement lever 59 is rocked to release the hub-niember. Bui-ing the sewing ci the second side ol the label, Fig. 16, the latch 97 is moved into engagement with the stationary stop 101 on the bed 1 and the continued motion et the work-holder causes said latch to be tripped by said stop, thereby reieasing the bellcrank-lever 92, 94:. When the stitching is completed, the operator rocks the'escapement lever 59 from the position shown in Fig. 5 to that shown in Fig. 6, and thereby lifts the circular head 93 of the bellcranlz-lever 92, 9/1 into one of the notches before the locking tooth 60 is withdrawn from another of said notches in the hub-member L12. The lever 103 is rocked by means ot' the treadle-controlled lever 106 pivotedat 107 to the bracket 108 sustained by vthe machine bed. One arm ot' the lever 10G extends under the lever 103 and the other arm is connected to the usual treadle or knee-shift by means of the chain 109. wardly and rearwardly curved extension 110 which is adapted to strike the pin 87 on the angular extension 86 of the winding pawl 77 and reset said pawl in operative position.
Connected to the lever y106 near the treadle-chain 109 is a presser-toot lifting chain 111 which is connected at its upper end to the usual presser-foot lifting lever 112 pivoted at 113 to the bracket-arm 3. `The lever 112 is connected at its forward endto the vertical slide-rod 113 journaled inthe head 4. This slide-rod carries at its l'ower end the angularextension piece l1111 which is adapted to lift the lateral pin 115 carried by the presser-bar 50.
