VERTICAL DRILL-ING AND BORING MACHINE. 1
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 1S, 1922.
Application filed May 20, 1920. Serial No. 382,720.
In a machine Y1n accordance with this invention the outer tool spindle lis provided with a detachable tool-receiving nose at one end, and with a ball or roller bearing where-v by the inner vspindle is supported.
I will fully describe my invention with reference` to the accompanying drawingr which is a part sectional elevation of a vertical drilling machine embodying one construction in accordance with my invention.
Referring tothe drawings, the outer spindle 1 is made hollow and is provided at its lower end with a detachable nose 2 adapted to receive a drill. Within the outer spindle is disposedV an inner spindle 3 also adapted at its lower end to receive a drill. The nose 2 may be connected to the outer spindle 1 by a bayonet joint, by a thread, or by any other device permitting it tobe readily attached thereto and detached therefrom. lThe outer spindle is `driven from the driving shaft l by bevel ` wheels 5, 6, through a driving sleeve 7 integral `with the bevel wheel 6 provided with a key 8 engaging a long key-way 9 in the outerspindle. The bevel wheel 6 is supported by a bracket 21 on the frame 22 of the machine. The inner sp-indle 3 is driven through a belt pulley 10 keyed to a sleeve 23provided with a key 11 engaging a long keyway 12in the upper portion of the inner spindle which projects beyond the endy of the outer spindle. The sleeve 23 of the pulley 10 is supported by a ball bearing 24 carried by the head 25 of the frame 22 of the machine. The lower end of the inner spindle 3 is supported by a ball bearing 18 carried by the outer spindle 1, said ball bearing preventing endwise meve ment of the inner spindle in respect of the outer spindle.
The feed in the construction illustrated is Ycommon to both Sp-indles,and is operated by a pinion 14: on a shaft 15 carried by the bracket 21 and provided with a hand wheel 16, said pinion engaging a rack 17 attached to a collar 18 bearing against ball thrust bea-rings 19, 2O on the outer spindle 1. If desired, the feed shaft 15 maybe power driven. If desired, I may substitute roller bearings for the ball bearings 13, 19, 20, 24.
It will nowbe seen that the drilling machine herein .described has two co-aXial toolV spindles either of which may be put into operation independently of the other. The outerv spindle is intended for use with drills of large diameter, while the inner spindle can be used for drills of small diameter.
If desired, the tool spindles 1 and 3 may be adapted to receive a boring or similar tooly instead of a drill.
`What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In vertical drilling' and boring machines, the combination of a hollow outer spindle, a detachablev tool-receiving nose secured on said spindle and forming extension thereof, a ball bearing carried spindle, a tool-receiving spindle within said hollow outer spindle, said inner spindle being supported by said ball bearing, whereby relative endwise movement of said spindles is prevented, bearings for said spindles, means for rotating said spindles, and means for feeding said spindles.
2. In vertical drillingk and boring malchinos` the combination of a hollow outer spindle` a detachable tool-receiving nose secured on said spindle and yforming an eXtension thereof, a hall bearing carried by Vsaid hollow outer spindle, a tool-receiving spinby said hollow outer n dle within said hollow outer spindle, said K inner spindle being supported by Said ball bearing, whereby relative endwise movement of said spindle is prevented, bearings for said spindles, means for rotating said outer spindle, independent means for rotating said inner spindle, and means for simultaneously feeding both spindles.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to ythis specification.
THOMAS LUMSDEN.
