To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Jnss Gr. MoNIsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Movable Headlights, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to dirigible headlights for automobiles and the like, the principal object of the invention being to provide simple and effective means for causing the lamps to turn with the steering mechanism of the car so as to throw the light upon the road when making turns.
Another object of the invention is to form the supporting means for the lamps from tubing so as to cheapen the construction and provide a neat and effective arrangement.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illusf trated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic plan View showing my invention applied to an automobile.
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the supporting means for one of the lamps.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the center of Figure 2.
As shown in these views a lamp supporting post 1 is placed at each side of the front end of the automobile to support the lamps 2 and each post is formed of a length of tubing, to the upper ends of which a cap 3 is secured by a set screw 4. This cap is provided with a lug 5 to receive the lamp. A sleeve 6, also formed of tubing, receives the central part of the post and the post is held against longitudinal movement but permitted to have rotary movement in said sleeve by means of the upper and lower collars 7 and 7. with a depending flange 8 for engaging the top of the sleeve and the lower collar is provided with a bore race 8 to receive the balls 9, the other part of the race being formed by a flange 10 on the lower part of the sleeve. An arm 11 has a collar 12 thereon for engaging the sleeve and these parts are clamped together by means of the set screw 13. This arm 11 carries a part 14 which is adapted to be bolted to a part of the automobile. In this way the post is supported from the automobile and has turning movement in the sleeve but is held against longitudinal movement. An arm 15 has a collar 16 formed thereon which receives the lower end of the post and is secured thereto by means of the set screw 17. This arm has its outer end forked as at 18 and the two arms of the two posts are connected together by the rod 19 which has its ends rounded and flattened and provided with holes to receive the bolts 2O which pass through the forked ends-of the arms 15, the enlarged ends of rod 19 engaging the forks 18. Thus the two posts are connected together by said rod and this rod is connected with the connecting rod 21 of the steering mechanism of the car by means of the two coiled springs 22 which have. their `ends connected with the rod 19 by means of the clips 24.- and with the rod 21 by means of the clip 23. By this arrangement of clips the springs form a V.
It will thus be seen that when the steering mechanism of the car is manipulated to turn the front wheels the lamp post will also be turned so that the rays of light will follow the road. If the connecting rod is in front of the car the springs will be reversed to give the rod 19 the proper movement.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
