IMPROVEMENT IN BRAKES FOR PREVENTING RETROGRADE MOVEMENT IN SEWING AND OTHER MACHINERY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,166, dated July 22, 1873; application filed July 9, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID T. PEEK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mechanical Movement for Sewing and other Machinery; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l'represents a sectional side view of my invention. Figure 2 is a similar view of the same when the wheel is arrested in its retrograde motion. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same.

This invention consists in the arrangement of a wheel with a corrugated or scalloped edge, in combination with a roller placed loosely in a chamber with an inclined bottom and open toward the scalloped edge of the wheel, said chamber being attached to the frame or any other stationary portion of the machine, in such a manner that when the wheel is turned in the proper direction the scallops on the edge of said wheel keep pushing the roller up the inclined bottom of its chamber and the motion of said wheel is not stopped; but whenever an attempt is made to turn said wheel in the opposite direction, the roller drops down on the inclined bottom, and it is caught in one of the recesses in the edge of the wheel, and by these means the retrograde motion of the wheel is effectually stopped without exposing any portion of the mechanism to an undue strain.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the fly-wheel or the belt-wheel of a sewing-machine or of any other machine in which it is desirable to avoid a retrograde movement. This wheel is mounted on a shaft, B, which has its hearings in a frame, 0, of any suitable form or construction. One or both of the edges of the wheel A are corrugated or scalloped, and on any fixed portion of the frame 0 is secured a chamber, D, that opens toward the scalloped edge of the wheel, and the bot- 1 and 2.- In this chamber I place a roller, I),
which, when the wheel A is at rest, rolls down i on the inclined bottom a and bears against the scalloped edge of the wheel.
If the wheel is rotated in the direction of the arrow marked on it in Fig. 1, the projections of its scalloped edge push the roller up on the inclined bottom aof the chamberD and the wheel is free to revolve. But it an attempt is made to turn the wheel in the direction of the arrow marked on it in Fig. 2, the roller 1) immediately catches in one of the recesses of the scalloped edge of said wheel and the retrograde motion is effectually prevented. By this arrangement the roller bis not wedged in between the side or periphery of the wheel and the frame, or any part attached to the frame; but said roller simply forms a stop or key inserted between one of the projections of the scalloped edge and the inclined bottom of the fixed chamber D the wheel is, therefore, not exposed to any undue side pressure; neither are the bearings of the shaft B exposed to any undue strain, and the wheel can be freely turned at all times in the right direction, indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1. The same effect will be produced by making the wheel corrugated on its periphery, the position of the boxD being changed accordingly.
