STATES PATENT GFFTCE.
JOHN MURRAY; OF LONDON,"E1\TGLANDL BOOKIBINDING MACHINERY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN Mnn'nAY, a subis distributed upon the sidesf'of the books previously to the application of the covers to them. Y
' .Hitherto, a difiiculty in this operation has been toensure that there should be sufiicient adhesive about those slightly roject.- ing-edges adjacent to the back to ensure that the longitudinal grooves 01" folds in the cover at these points at each sideof the back should be adequately'.secured; The invention has forit'sl object simple and effective means for the distribution of adhesive whereby these disabilities are overcome.
Accordingto the-invention there is provided an adhesive applying roller of length and diameter commensurate with the. di-
' mensions of the book" and having in it a longitudinal groove of a' transverse contour substantially conforming to that projecting edge of the book the application of adhesive to which is particularly essential. With this roller there coacts a ductor roller of like dimensions arranged adjacent and with its axis parallel. Upon the ductor roller is a longitudinal rib in contour substantially a counterpart to the longitudinal groove in the adhesive-applying roller. The two rollers are geared together so that the rib coacts with the groove during their revolution after the manner of the well-known Geneva movement. Preferably, the rib is slightly narrower than the groove, and means may be provided for fine relative adjustment of the Specificationof Letters Patent; Patented Map, 21 1922, 7 Application filed l ebruarv25, 1921. Serial No. 447,687.
another 'by springs or other means, and cam' or other devices may be provided for varying their contiguity during their operation and thusvarying the thickness at different points" of the layer of the adhesive they convey to the books.
Either the adhesive-carrying roller may be applied to' the book, or the book may be applied to the adhesive-carrying roller. In either case a stop device is preferably applied to limit the travelv of the roller definitely .so that it may not overrun the open edge of the book.
' In addition to the ductor roller, other ductor rollers, scraping devices, or means for controlling the supply of adhesive to they adhesive-applying roller may be provided. I X 1J v s ufii'cient of a'casing-i'n machine embodying the features which" form the subject of the present 1 invention to diagrammatically illustrate an example of" its carrying out I is shown on two accompanying sheets of explanatory drawings, Figures 1 and Qbeingelevations at right angles to one another and'showingthe devices for, applying adhesive to one side of a book, like devices being pfro'videdto operate uponithe other 'si'deijif the book. v
' Theibook'Ais presented upon a blade A which is raised and lowered in a vertical plane in consonance with the motions of the gluing mechanism by any form of cam or equivalent mechanism (not shown) to an adhesive-applying roller B of length and diameter commensurate with the dimensions ofthe book and having in it a longitudinal groove B substantially conforming to the projecting edge A of the back of the book A. With this roller B there coacts a ductor roller C having a longitudinal rib C counterpart to the groove B The ductor roller C is fed with adhesive from a trough D by a second and again counterpartly grooved ductor roller D.
The adhesive-applying roller B is mounted on arms 13 which are pivoted on a-shaft B These arms are connected by links 13* to levers 13 fast on a rocking shaft 13 fast on which is also a quadrant B gearing with a rack-bar 13 This rack bar is operated by a cam or equivalent (not shown) in conindicated by chain lines, to receive a supply of adhesive therefrom.
helical'gear wheel E' gearing with a like wheel E on a spindle E carried in brackets E in one of the arms B and having at its lower end a helical gear wheel E gearing with a like wheel E on the shaft B 1011 which is a pinion E engaging apinion E on a shaft E on which is a helical wheel E? engaged by a like wheel E3 on what may be considered thedriving shaft E of the machine. By this train of gearing is the roller B rotatedj 1 M The d'uctonrollers C, D are carried in fixed brackets G the former alone being driven by a helical wheel G on' its spindle which is driven by a helical wheel G 'on'a spindle, G having on its lower end a like wheel G drive'nby alikewheel G on the shaft B I a p v v In operation and the roller B being in the position indicated by the chain-line circle its periphery is engaged by the adhesive laden periphery'of the ductor roller Ci The two rollers rotate together in opposite 'directions and the gearing is so set that the projection C on the ,rollerC enters (and so fills with adhesive) the groove B in the roller B'after thelmanner of the well knownfGeneva movement. The roller B having received a coating of adhesive is now advanced' to the book back the projectingupper edge A 'of which enters the groove B and receives an adequate amount of adhesive therefrom.
The roller B continues to rotate and the book rises at the same speedfrom the position shown in'full lines in Fig. 2 to the position shown in dotted lines in said figure, the roller being-pressed into contact with it by operation of the e-am through the rack bar B Upon the spindle of theroller B is a.
sothat it delivers its adhesive upon the side of the book. It then retires to receive a fresh supply from the ductor roller C, the book is removed, another substituted and the cycle of operations recommences.
What Iclaim is i 1. In book-binding machinery means for applying adhesive to the projecting edges and backofa book comprising an adhesiveapplying roller on an axis parallel with the book and having a longitudinal groove substantially conforming incontour to the projecting edge, a ductor-roller serving the adhesive-roller and having a rib counterpart to the groove and means for moving book and roller into contact with one another and so as to distribute adhesive from the roller over the edge and surface of the book, as set forth;
2. "In the devices forming the subjectmatter ofthe foregoing claim hereof means for advancing'the adhesiveroller to the book and for moving the book across the path of the roller, as set forth. v
3. In the devices forming the subject-matter of claim 1 hereof means for advancing the adhesive roller towards the book to apply adhesive thereto and for retiring it into 1 name to this specification.
