GARAGE-DOOR CONTROL.
Specication of Letters Patent. pgttnted MUM?, 2i, 922
Application filed November 4, 1920. Serial No. 421,619.
trated in the accompanying drawing, in'
which: l
Figure 1 is a plan of av garage. Figure 2 is a sectional elevation. Figure 3 is an enlarged detail of a crosshead for operating the doors along the line 3 3 in Figure 2. Figure 4 is a side elevation ot 'Figure 3 along the line 4-4 in Figure 1.
Similar numbers ot' reference refer to the same or ysimilar o parts throughout the several views.
Referringin detail to the drawing, l have illustrated in outline the walls 5, the floor 6, the ceiling 7, and the doors 8 of the usual garage. To each of these doors I have hinged a connecting rod 9 by means of theA bracketlO. The two rods 9 are joined together by means of a bolt 10A which threads into a crosshead 11 which slides on the fixed shaft 12 on which it is prevented from rotating by the pin 13 which moves freely in a splineway in the shatt 12. The shaft12 is supported at either end in the brackets 14.
On the lower side ofthe crosshead 11 is hinged a connecting rod 15 by means of the shouldered screw 16 which is prevented from turning by means ot the cotter 17 passing through the crosshead 11.
The further end of the connecting rod .15 is attached to an adjustable crank-arm 18 which is secured to a worm I wheel 19 mounted in the frame 20 and driven by the worm 21 on the shaft 22, which is rotated by the grooved pulley 23, which, iny turn, is driven through a round belt 24 from` the pulley 25 on the motor 26.
Projecting laterally lfrom the crosshead 11 is an arm 27 whose enlarged end 28 is A tapped for the rods 29 and 30, both of which on the threaded portions ot the rods and jamming same against the member 284 when the rods 29 and30 are properly adjusted. The downturned ends 31 act as trips for engaging the arm 32 of the toggle switch 33, one of the members 31 throwing the switch in one direction and the other throwing'lt in the opposite direction. The switch 33 is placed in the motor circuit 34 which isalso controlled by a switch-35, which is placed out on the drivewayA at a point accessible from the drivers seat when the car is stopped sinhciently tar Jfrom the garage to permit the opening of the doors.
It is evident that bythe use Aof a connection to the lighting circuit that switch 35 may also vcontrol the light wvithin the garage, without departing from the spirit of my invention. ,Y
lVhile I am aware that other devices have been constructed for this purpose employing reversible motors, etc., with their at? tendant complications, I -have chosen lto use theordinary crank motion as the simplest form for my device, permitting thereby the` use of a one-way motor, and providing a maximum leverage for the operating parts when starting to close or stoppin the mo tion ot the doors when closed. ly setting the tripping mechanism so that the door will close with the crank arm 18 on a dead center it would be impossible to open the garage doors regardless of the pitch of the worm 21.
Then desiring to use this device on garages having double doors it i's only necessary to place an evener across the two crossheads 11 and attaching thisevener to the connecting rod 15, all of which could be done without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The operationof my device is`as follows:
' Then desiring to enter the garage it is only necessary to operate the switch 35, which -is a three-way switch wired as indicated.
the c'rosshead 11 toward the front of the garage, thereby forcing the doors 8 outwardly until a point is reached where the member'31 engages the4 lever' 32 and automatically stops the motor.
It will be observed that the toggle switch is necessarily a three-way switch in order' that the motor can again be started after it has been stopped by means of the trips 3 1'. The operation of the switch 35 will then continue the rotation ot' the motor and the` completion of the Cycle by the crank arm lS-whieh will restore the doors S to their former closed position.
ll'hile I have thus illustrated and deleeribed my invention it. is not my desire to limit myself to this` precise. form o r method of application. but intend that it shall cover all forms and modifications that fall fairly Within the appemled claims.
' What l claim as new and desire to protect by Lettere'latent of the llnited States is:
l. A garage door consisting.r of a pair of swinginga doors. in combination with a fixed horizontal rod mounted at right angles to the meeting point ot' the doors near their top, a crosshead on Said rod, two connectiuprods branching` out from said crosshead and attached to the swinging ends of the doors, a one-Ava)v motor, a crank driven h v sald motor whose axle is at right angles to and in the same vertical plane with said" fixed rod, a connecting rod joining said crank to said crosshead, adjustable pendant stops on said erosshead, a three-Way toggle switch whose lever is moved between said stops, and a three-Way button switch Wired with said toggle switch toveontrol said n10- tor from sai .l crossl1ead or by hand.
In a door closing device7 the combination of a motor driven door actuating mechanism havingj'a. erosshead member provided with a lateral projecting standard through which are threaded from oposite sides a pair of down-turned. trip members, and a fixed toggle switch in the circuit of said motor having its operatinzg` lever between said do\vn-turned trip members.
