UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HILARY L. HAISSLY AND ADAM. POSLER, 0F THERESA, WISCONSIN.
Patented Mar. 21, 1922.
PAINT COMPOSITION.
1 116,293, Specification of Letters Patent.
No Drawing. Application filed- March 25, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HILARY L. HAESSLY and ADAM POSLER, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Theresa, in the county of Dodge and State of VVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paint Compositions; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to a new composition for paint and it comprises certain novel ingredients in the composition, as well as the novel method of preparing and mixing the same, all as hereinafter set forth.
The general object of the invention is the production of a paint made largely from inexpensive materials. which will have more body and better wearing qualities than paints of the same class now known to the trade.
A more specific object of the invention is the production of a composition with which a surface may be thoroughly covered by the application of a single coat, thus effecting a great saving in labor, where it has hitherto been necessary to apply two or more coats of paint in order to completely cover the surface to which the paint is applied.
In the manufacture of our improved paint, we take one hundred parts of clean white sand which is composed largely of silica, twenty five to fifty parts resin and twenty five parts calcareous material such as plaster of Paris, gypsum chalk or the like. These ingredients are ground as fine as possible, and thoroughly mixed together and gently heated long enough to drive off all moisture. We then take twenty five parts commercial white lead, ground in oil, and mix the same with a vehicle which may be gasoline, kerosene, linseed oil or the like, in the proportion of two and one half pounds of white lead to one gallon of the vehicle. The white lead and the vehicle are mixed to- Serial No. 455,493.
gether separately and subsequently mixed with the first named ingredients. A pigment is then added to give the required color.
It is also to be noted that if a considerable amount of pigment is used, the amount of silicious and calcareous material should be correspondingly reduced, in order not to have the paint too thick to spread readily.
While the proportions stated above appear to give the best results for most surfaces, it is to be understood that the proportions may be varied somewhat, according to whether the surface to which it is to be applied is hard and comparatively impervious, or rough and porous. The proportions may also be varied according to whether the work is to be outside or inside.
We have found that paint made according to the above formula is practically water and sun proof. It may be used on brick, cement, wood, plaster or iron with satisfactory results. One coat will thoroughly cover the surface to which it is applied, even where a light color is applied to a dark surface.
We claim:
1. A. paint composition consisting of silica, plaster of Paris, resin and white lead, all finely ground and mixed with a suitable vehicle.
2. A paint composition consisting of one hundred parts silica, twenty five parts plaster of Paris, twenty five parts resin and twenty five parts white lead, all finely ground and mixed with a suitable vehicle in the proportion of two and one half pounds white lead to one gallon of the vehicle.
In testimony that we' claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands at Theresa, in the county of Dodge and State of WIS- consin.
HILARY L. HAEssLY. ADAM POSLER.
