Description

T. H. JACOB,
HILLSIDE LUG. 7 APPLICATION man Nov 17, 1921.
Patented Mar. 21, 1922.
UNITED STATES THOMAS H. JACOB, 0F WAUSAU, WISCONSIN.
HILLSIDE LUG.
Application filed November 17, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS H. JACOB, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Wausau, in the county of Marathon and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hillside Lugs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention is a device for increasing the traction or gripping action of the wheel of a tractor, designed especially to prevent the tractor from slipping on side hills.
I attach a lug to the angle-irons positioned on the rim of a tractor wheel, the lugs being U shaped and made of angle-iron.
The flange of the angle-iron will prevent the wheel and the lug from sinking to an undesirable degree into loose soil and will pack the earth in such wise as to cause the lug to get a better grip. The filler of ground, as it were, which is in the loop of the lug, is not disturbed and remains a permanent anchor. Where ground is pressed upon immediately by the wheel, the pressure and the prying action of the lug on the earth disturbs it so that it does not produce the desired traction.
My lug projects over the wheel and surrounds the filler or portion of ground.
It is old to provide lugs projecting straight out for several inches, but the effect of these is to break up the ground, whereas mine leaves the filler or block of dirt, which is inside of the loop, entirely unbroken and thereby produces a maximum of traction.
My lug also is especially strong in structure and easily manufactured.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the wheel.
Figure 2 is a plan of the lug.
Figure 3 is a side elevation thereof, and
Figure 4: is a cross section on the line H of Figure 2.
On wheel 10 are positioned angle-irons 11. My lug is provided with a flange 12 out- Specification of Letters Patent.

wardly extending from an upstanding member 13, which is provided with apertures 14: through which bolts 15 are run to secure the lug to one of the angle-irons 11. The other arm of the lug is provided with an aperture 16 through which a bolt 17 is run aflixing this end of the lug to the next succeeding angle-iron 11. Flange 12 extends forwardly so as to form a projection 18 which fits in closely against the rim, as shown in Figure 1.
In the operation of the device the lug exercises a gripping action upon the earth. Flange 12 packs the soil, enabling member 18 to get a better grip. A certain amount of earth is enveloped by the lug and remains in an unbroken condition, thus giving an anchoring effect and increasing the traction. The shape of the lug is such that it operates to retain, as said, a portion of the earth. There is no break in the lug which permits the earth to travel laterally and escape, thus decreasing the traction.
I claim:
1. In a tractor wheel, a rim, teeth on said rim and a lug extending outwardly from one of said teeth and inwardly to another of said teeth.
2. In a tractor wheel, a rim, angle-irons on said rim, and a lug substantially L shaped in cross section aflixed to one of said angleirons and extending outwardly therefrom and inwardly directed and aflixed to the next succeeding angle-iron.
3. In a tractor wheel, a rim, angle-irons secured to said rim and inclined to the sides of said rim, a U shaped lug substantially L shaped in cross section secured to one of said angle-irons, a flange on said lug having its inner face contacting throughout a portion of its length with said rim, a projection on said flange abutting against the side edge of said rim and means for securing the other end of said lug to the next succeeding angleiron.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have'hereunto set my hand at Wausau, in the county of Marathon and State of Wisconsin.
THOMAS H. JACOB.
