ROY A. MccUNE, or EAST PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR PUSHER.
Specification of Letters Patent. P t t d 21., 1922,
Application filed January 17, 1921. Serial No. 437,775.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that L'ROY A. MOCUNE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of East Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Car Pushers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to manually operated pushers for moving cars upon tracks, and
has for one'object the provision of an improved non-slip car pusher which is partly automatic in operation, and which will operate with great ease.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a car pusher having a mechanically V Figure 1 operated follow-upxblock or wedge adapted to engage the wheel of the car being moved, and prevent backward movement of the car.
Another object of the inventioniis theprovision of a car pusher having improved clamping means for holding the car pusher on the track.
These and other objects and advantages will be more fully described in thefollowing specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings-in which.
is aside elevation of the'car pusher. i
Figure 2 is artop plan of the'pusher of Figure 1. V
Figure 3 is a front elevation'showing the clamps forming part of my'improved apparatus in engagement'with the head of a track rail.
Figure 4 is a side elevation showing a mo'difiedform of apparatus embodying my invention.
1 ride on the top face of a trackrail, and is provided with a pair of projecting ears 3 and- 4, on the-respective sides thereof, and has a centrally arranged slot or groove 5 formed in its upper face and opening through the forward end. 7
A jaw member 6 is pivotally secured between each of the pairs of ears 3 and 4 by a pivot or fulcrum pin 7 which passes through apertures in the ears and through a centrally arranged aperture in the jaw.
A slide bar 8 reduced in cross section from a point adjacent its transverse center line rearward, to form a tongue portion 11, is slidably mounted within the. slot or groove 5 wedging action when the to the lever 16 and pin 17.
in the bed-plate or base 2. The rear end of. the tongue 11 is provided with a curved or convex bearing face 12, and is of greater vertical thickness than am, main body of the tongue, thereby providing a projection or looking lug 13 adapted to engage against a cross-bar l'secured'across the-slot or groove 5 in the base 2 to prevent displacement of the bar 8.
The forward end ofthe slide'bar S is recessed to receivea wedgeblock!) pivotally held in. position by a pin 10 which passes through the sides of the recessed portion of the bar 8 and through the block. V
.The jaws 6 are provided adjacent their upper ends with taperedbearingapertures 15. which are tapered toward their outer ends. V An operating lever 16 is mounted between the upper ends of the jaws 6 and is pivotally held in position by a pivot or fulcrum pin '17 which passes through a bearing aperture in the lever, and through the tapered bear.- ing apertures15 in the jaws6,
It willfthus be seen that jaws will be reversed to movejthem away from the rails. This rocking movement of the jawsis caused by the tapered form of the bearing aperture 15, which causes a pressure is applied The lever 16 projects rearwardly and upwardly on an anglefrom a point ad acent the bearingaperture for pivot 17, and has a handle :socket member v18- nvotally mounted T011 itsrear end for sidewise movement by a pivot pin 19 which; passes through jaws 2021 of the'socket member 18 and through the end of the lever 16. I
A pusher shoe 22 having a pair of projecting ears 23 on its rear side is pivotally mounted on the forward end of the lever 16 by a pin 24 which passes through apertures in the ears and an aperture in the lever. The face of the shoe 22 extends downwardly, forming a guide tongue 25 adapted to ride in a slot 26 in the slide bar 8.
The lever 16 is provided with a doWnwardly extending projection or lug 26' im v the lever 16 is. pivotally supported on thejaws 6 by a. pin
plied to lift the lever, the movement of the A second projection or lug 28 is provided adjacent the forward end of the lever 16 and g has an inclined rear face 29 adapted to bear a ainst the inclined rear face 30 of slot 26 in slide bar 8, as the lever 16 is raised, thus caus ing a wedging action. Before the lug 28 contacts with the face 30 of slot 26, the jaws 6 are released by'the lifting of the lever 16,as explained before. Therefore, since the wedge block 9 is gripped under the car wheel, the wedging action caused by the face 29 of lugs 28 engaging the inclined face 30 of slot 26, will cause the bed-plate 2, lever 16, and jaws 6 to move forwardly relative to the slide bar 8, and thusbe ready for a second contact with the car wheel.
The advantages of a device of this class where a simple swinging or rocking movement of the handlewill automatically feed the device forward along the rail as the car is moved, will be readily seen by those skilled in the art.
The advantages of having an automatically operated pusher in which the parts are all composed of solid units, and the absence of springs or other easily broken elements will be readily appreciated, since thedevice must of necessity be capable of withstanding rough usage.
Attention 193180 directed to the arrangement of the" handle socket 18, which is mounted for sidewise or lateral movement in order that the person using the device may stand either between or outside of the track rails as desired. I claim 1. A car usher comprising a base adapted to ride on t e top face of a track rail, a pair of clamping jaws pivoted to said base and provided with tapered apertures adjacent their upper ends, an operating lever fulcrumed on a pin mounted in said apertures,
a pusher shoe ivoted on the forward end of said lever, an a wedge member adapted to be moved forward by said lever to engage and hold the car wheel in moved position.

3. A car pusher comprising in combination a base, a pair of clamping jaws,-an op,-
crating lever, and a pusher shoepivoted on the forward end of sa1dlever,a slide bar mounted for sliding movement in said base,
and means onsaid operatingle ver adapted to simultaneously move saidwbarforwardas said pusher shoe engages'the car-wheel so as to cause said bar toengage and hold the car 4. A carpusher comprlsing in combina: tion a base, a pair of'clamping jaws, anoperating lever, and a pusher shoe pivoted on the forward end of said lever, a slide bar mounted for slidingmovement in'saidbase, a pivoted wedgeblock onthe forward end of said.
slide bar-,and a projecting lug 011 saidoperatmg lever adapted to engage the rear end of said bar to simultaneously movesaidbar forward as said pusher shoe engages the car wheel so as. to cause said wedge to engage and hold the car .wheel in moved position.
5. The combination with-w: carpusher mover comprising in combination aibase a pair of clampingjaws, an operating lever, a pusher shoe pivoted on the forwardend of said lever, a slide bar .mounteidfor sliding movement in said base, a pivoted wedge block on the forward end of said slide bar, a projecting lug on said operating lever adapt- "ed to engagetherear end of said bar to-simultaneously move said bar forwardas said pusher shoe engages the car and cause said wedge to engage and hold the car wheel in moved position, and means for automatically drawing said base, clamps-and operating lever forward after the, termination of each pushing stroke. l i I In testimony'whereof, I have. hereunto signed'my name.
