UNITED vSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE F. GRUBE, OF EVANSTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE BELBER TRUNK & BAG
COMPANY. OF PHILADELXHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION 0F PENNSYL- VANLA..
WARDROBE TRUNK.
Application filed January 27, 1919.
.citizen of the United States, residing' at Evanston, count-y of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Vardrobe Trunks, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for simultaneously locking and unlocking a plurality of drawers in a compartment of a wardrobe trunk.
A preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in whiche- F ig. l is a perspective view of a trunk` with my improved drawer loc-king device applied thereto.
F ig. 2 is a partial front view of the drawer compartment showing the locking device open. l
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section showing the locking device in plan.
Fig, t is a partial section through the compartment on line 4 4 of Fig. 3, drawn on a larger scale.
The trunk comprises, as is usual, two compartments a and b, `hinged together, the first compartment being occupied, in whole or in part, by a set of drawers, and the second compartment being provided with supports for garment hangers or adapted for any other desired use. My invention relates only to that compartment provided with drawers.
The last named compartment, c, which is a box-shaped frame, preferably of wood, is provided with metal anges or strips c which project beyond the edges of the wooden frame and interlock with the other compartment when the trunk is closed. The compartment a is also provided with spacedapart-supports (l, which are shown as solid horizontal partitions, but may assume any form so long as they support the drawers c and permit them to be independently slid into open and closed position.
Extending along each vertical edge of the compartment a is a locking bar or strip f, which is shown in hinged relation thereto. Preferably, the hinges are located at the angle or corner formed between the out-er edge of the wooden frame or body and the .Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 273,212.
inner face of the contiguous metal flange c. These locking bars` being pivoted on axes extending longitudinally thereof, may be swung inward so as to overlap the drawers. when closed, and prevent their withdrawal; or may be swung outward against the inner faces of the flanges c, in which position the drawers are free to be withdrawn.
Pivoted on horizontal axes to the upper vends of the respective locking bars are bars gand 7L. The upper drawer of the series of drawers is preferably provided with a transversely extending recess or depression z' to receive the bars g and 7L. Bar g is provided with a slot or hole and bar L with a pin 7c adapted to engage the slot Bar L also carries a lock, or locking' hasp, m, which is adapted to fit within a hole n in the front of the upper drawer and is provided with a key-actuated sliding bolt adapted to engage an adjacent recess, which may be conveniently formed in the lower wall of that part of the frame or body 0, overhanging the upper drawer.
The construction, as described, is manipulated as follows. Assuming that the mechanism is in locking position: The lock m is first operated to unlock the bar it. Both bars g and h are therefore now free, together with the bars f, to swing outward on the vertical axes of the bars f, after which the4 bars g and L may be swung or dropped down on their own horizontal axes so as to lie alongside the bars f. The drawers are now free to be independently withdrawn. To lock the drawers in position after they are replaced, the bars g and 7L are swung up on their own axes into about a horizontal position. and are then swung in toward the upper drawer, thereby swinging in the bars f into position to prevent the withdrawal of the drawers. lVhen the bars g and h have moved into their innermost position they fit into the recess i and therefore lie flush with the upper drawer, pin 7c engages slot y', and lock m engages hole n. The bolt of the lock is then operated to secure the bar 7L in position, thereby locking in position the entire series of bars g, L, f, and preventing the withdrawal of the drawers.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. ln a trunk, the combination with a trunk compartment, of drawers therein arranged one above another, a pair of vertically'extending bars arranged along opposite sides of the compartment and pivotally mounted thereon-so as to swing into and out of the path of the drawers, hars ypivotally attached on horizontal axes to the rstnamed bars and adapted, when swung upward on `their axes and when the vfirst named bars are swung into the path of the drawers, to span the space across the drawers, and means to lock the second `bars in fixed relation with the trunk vcompartment when said bars are in the positions speciiied.
2. In a. trunk, the combination with a trunk compartment, of Adrawers thereinarranged one above another, a pair lof vertically extending bars varranged 'along opposite sides ofthe compartment and pivotallymounted 1thereon so as to swing into and out ofthe path 'of the drawers,'.bars pivotally attached on horizontal axes 'to the trst named bars and adapted, whenswung upward on their axes and when the first named bars are swunginto the path of fthe drawers, to extend in vlront, of the drawers, and a single locking contrivance adapted, when saidl bars areinthepositions speci- `tied, to lock all the bars in said positions.
3. In a trunk, the combination with a trunk compartment, of drawers therein arranged one above another, a pair of vertically extending Ybars arranged along foppo-v site sides ofthe compartment and ,pivotally mounted thereon so as to swing vinto and out of the path `oi the drawers, and bars pivotally attached on vhorizontal axes to the first Vnamed ybars and adapted, when swung upward on their axes and when the first named bars are swung into the path of the drawers, to engage each other.
4. In Ya wardrobe trunk, the combination with a trunk compartment, of a tier of vdrawers thereon .arranged one above the other Vand each extendinghorizontally when -thetrnnk isstood on ,enda.,drawerend locking contrivance comprising two longitudinally and vertically extendingbars aryranged'along opposite sides ofthevcompartnient and pivotally mounted thereonso as to swing into and out of the path of the drawers, means pivotally attached to the drawer-end locking contrivance and ada-pted to be-swung upward and inward and to span the space-across the tier of drawers, and means to retain position. y A n 5. In a trunk, the combination with a trunk compartment, o'fdrawers therein ar-V ranged -onefabove another, a pair of vertically extending bars arranged along oppo site sides of `the compartment Vand Epivotally mounted thereon so asito'swingiinto and out of .the path of the drawers, cross bars pivotally attached'to the respective iirst named bars and whose free ends are adapted to engageeach other, and a lockingcontrivanceVV carried by one of the second named bars, Y
the upper drawer having a transversely eX- tending depression to receive the second named bars and a. recess to receivethe vlocking contrivance. Y 4
