IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR PRODUCINGlNTERMITTENT ROTATIVE MOVEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,951, dated July 15, 1873 application filed June 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoscoE O. REYNOLDS, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Producing Intermittent Rotative Movements; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, is a description of my invention sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
The invention relates particularly to the organization of a mechanism for adj ustin g the extent of intermittent rotative movement of the take-up roll of a loom, but is more widely applicable as means for adjustably varying the extent of intermittent rotative movement of any shaft or roll to which such movements are to be imparted, In my invention I use, in combination with an eccentric on the driving-shaft, an adjustable eccentric or crank, by means of which the throw of the link or pawl arm may be varied to whatever extent may be desirable, and I pivot upon the arm a ratchet, with which engages a gang of detainer-pawls so arranged as to hold the ratchet in movements which are fractional parts of the length of each tooth, this ratchet-wheel having fixed to or forming part of it a pinion that engages with a gear, which, by a suitable gear-train, is connected with the take-up roll or other roll or shaft to be intermittently rotated, said gear having a stop mechanism connected with it that permits its rotation only in one direction. As the pawl-arm is driven forward by the eccentric its pawls prevent rotative movement of the ratchet and its pinion, and their forward thrust; therefore, turns the gear-wheel with which the pinion is in en gagement, but as the eccentric draws back the pawl-arm the pinion rotates upon the gearteeth (the gear being locked) and assumes a position in accordance with the extent of movement imparted to the pawl-arm by the eccentric. By making the driving eccentric adjustable this throw can be changed from nothing to the full throw afforded by the form of the eccentric, and such adjustment can be minutely varied in accordance with whatever variation of movement may be required for the take-up It is in the movement or organization thus generally described and in the details thereof that my invention consists.

The invention is shown as applied to a loom mechanism for working the take-up roll, this being the purpose for which it is more particularly intended.

From the arm f extends a pin, g, upon which is placed a ratchet-wheel, h, with the teeth of which engages a series of detainerpawls, t, that are so arranged as to respectively engage with the teeth of the ratchet in movements of the same which are fractional with respect to the length of each ratchettooth, or so that with three pawls, for instance, some one of the pawls will take a tooth at any movement of the ratchet equal to a third of the length of a tooth. This arrangement of pawls, however, is not new, but is a convenient arrangement to use in connection with my invention. Upon one side of the ratchetwheel h is a pinion, k, that rests upon and engages with the teeth of a gear-wheel, l, which wheel in the drawing is shown as fixed on one end of a shaft, m, turning in a bearing, a, said shaft having upon its opposite end a pinion, 0, that engages with and drives a gear, 10, fixed on the shaft of the take-up roll 0, rotative movement of the wheel 1 thereby imparting rotative movement to the roll 0. As the shaft b turns the eccentric throws forward the arm f, and as the pawls i hold the ratchet and pinion from rotation the pinion k, acting as a pawl on the wheel 1, turns the wheel to an extent in accordance with the throw of the eccentric. As the continued rotation of the shaft causes the eccentric to draw back the arm the pinion rotates upon the gear I, the wheel I being locked, and the ratchet turns, some one of the pawls looking into the ratchet whenever its rotative movement ceases, and
holding the ratchet for the next forward or gear-turnin g movement of the ratchet and its pinion. Now, to permit this movement to be adjustably varied, I hang the eccentric d, not directly upon the shaft 1), but indirectly thereupon, pivoting it directly upon another and intervening eccentric, g, which is placed upon the shaft, and is made adjustable rotatively. This eccentric g has, at its outer end, a flange or head, 0', and in this head is a curved slot, 8, concentric with the peripheral surface of the eccentric q, a clamp-screw, t, passing through the slot 8 and into the eccentric (1. By means of the screw the two eccentrics are fastened together so as to form but one, and by means of the slot the eccentrics d g may be relatively adjusted so as to vary the throw of the eccentric d to impart a minimum or a maximum movement to the arm f, the eccentric d being changed to a simple concentric wheel, imparting no throw by bringing the two eccentrics to the relative position shown at A, and the two eccentrics for the greatest throw being relatively positioned, as seen at B.
By adjusting the relative position of the eccentrics between these two extremes the throw of the arm may be changed to produce any change of movement desirable. Instead of the two eccentrics, one eccentric may be used, and in connection with it an adjustable crank. I prefer, however, the two eccentrics.
To keep the wheel lfrom back movement, or to detain it after its forward movement by the pinion k a pinion, a, ratchet v, and pawls 20 may be used, the wheel 1 turning the pinion u and its ratchet c as the wheel moves forward, (the ratchet slipping under the pawls,) and some one of the pawls engaging with a ratchet-tooth and holding the ratchet and pinion and through them the wheel I, when the pinion It moves back.
I claim- 1. For intermittently rotating the gear I and a roll or shaft connected therewith, the combination of the eccentric d, arm f, ratchet h, pinion k, and pawls t, arranged and operating substantially as described.
2. In combination with the two eccentrics d g, the head r with its slot 8 and clamp-screw t, substantially as shown and described.
3. In combination with the ratchet h, pinion 70, and gear I, the pinion u, ratchet '17, and
pawls w for detaining the gear, substantially as described.
