specification of Letfersratent. Patented 'Mm 14 1922" Application filed November 14, 1921.' Serial Nc.-514,866.
To all whom t may concern.-
Bc it known that I, EDUARD Koene-R, a citizen of Germany, (who liasdeclared his intention to bccoine a citizen of the United States,) and resident ofl Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful linprovenients in Gear Cases, of which the following is a specification. f
This invention relates to gear cases for and efectua-lly counteract the severe lateral and torsional strains to which the case iS subjected, therebyinsuring the rigidity and increasing the durability and generaletV iciency of the structure. Y
In the preferred embodiment of my in-y vention herein illustrated the body of the gear case comprises two complementary trough-shaped sections of oval form in crosssection, each section being an integral sheet metal structure. The .ends of the respective sections have aixed thereto substantial brackets of special construction which not only effectually reinforce the case but also provide rigid end supporting jaws which are reliably yet detachably coupled, as will be hereinafter fully set forth. The precise scope of the invention will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings- Figure l is a front elevation of my iinproved gear case, the supporting arms therefor being shown in section.
2 is a plan of the gear case.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the structure.
Referring to the drawings, 5, 5 designate two trough-shaped sections, each of which comprises an integral sheet metal structure. The two bodies, of which one is the counter-v part 'of the other, are fitted together edge to edge to provide a shallow casing of suitable size and formto contain the interineshing gears of the power transmitting mecha,
nism for the vehicle to which the case is apgear cases for electric motorl plied. erably of oval forni in longitudinal section. The longitudinal' edges of the two sections are provided with corresponding semi-cir- The casing' thus provided is prefcular recesses 6 which, when the sections are united, provide in'botli sides of the structure'opposite circularv openings for the passage of the shaft or axle carrying-the driven gear wheel." The ,edgeV of the openingin en l that side ofthe case adjacent the inotor, is
preferably reinforcedby an annulus 7 which is riveted or otherwise secured to the adjacent walls of the two'sections..` Thesectionsvai'e also provided on the side adjacent the motor with corresponding semi-circular recesses 8 which affordan opening forthe'l entrance of the'inotor shaft to the yrase," Vwhich shaft carries. the driving gear wheel.
The sidewalls of one of the sections, in the-:present instance the uppersection,V has aHiXed thereto, by rivets or weldingflongi; tudinally disposed strips 9 ,which provide flanges that overlap the adjacent edges 'of the other'o'r lower section and thus prevent, Y
lateral displacement vof the yassociated.secg,
tions.
lateral thrust flange 12 which-.overlaps theV u side of the'section adjacent the niotorl and is riveted to such side, as at 13; an outwardly projecting perforated portion 14 constituting a jaw member, and lateral rein- On each'sectioii, adjacent its respective, ends', are inounted land secured two stoutfl brackets which project endwise from the secforcing ribs 15 which connect suchprojecting portion with the body of the bracket` The two brackets at Veach end of the case are suitably spaced apart so that the upper and lower jaws '14 embrace'-the adjacent supporting arm (16) projecting from lthe y l motor case or other fixed portion of the vehicle. The jaws are'rigidly secured to the respective arms by throughfbolts 17.
The construction just described provides reliable suspension devices which eifectually reinforce the respective ends ofthe case in suchfa manner as to counteract the severeV lateral and torsioi'ial strains to which the structure is subjected 'at and adjacent its points of support; and the structure as a Whole combines the advantages of rigidity., strength, lightness and durality.
In the present instance suitable coupling members are `applied to the javvs let at the respect-ive ends ot' the'structure, and such j aws, in conjunction With the coupling members, are secured to the respective bars by the bolts 1T. Each of the coupling members illustrated comprise a yoke-like device having a body 18 with upper and loiver angular end extensions 19. These' extensions arc perforated for the passage of the bolt 17 and the upper extension has struck up therefrom two spaced-apart lugs 2l between vwhich the head ot' the bolt is seated, suoli lugs thus serving as a lock t'o prevent accidental rotation of the bolt. These lugs areV also provided with perforations for the passage of a` cotter pin 22, Which, overhanging the head of the bolt, prevent accidental re-'z moval of the latter should the nut QSthereot work loose. l
It is to be understood that my invention is no t limited to the exact details ofconstruction hereinV .disclosed ask modifications may be made Within the principle ot the invention and the scope of the appended Vclaims. i
I claiml. In a gear case adapted to be Suspended at its ends from spaced supports, tivo troughlike sections, veach comprising Van integral. rim and sides, exterior brackets atixredV to each section adjacent thel respective ends of the rim, each of saidbrackets comprising a body mounted on the'rim and having whereby each pairvof adjacent jaws thus provided ar'e secured to a support embraced thereby.
2. n a` gear case adapted .to be suspended at its ends from spaced supports, vtwo trough-like sections, each ,comprising an integ-ral rim and sides, exterior brackets atiXed to each section adjacent the respective ends of the rim, each ot said brackets being an integral casting comprising a body mounted onthe rim and having 'a lateral thrust ilange which overlaps the adjacent side of the section,` and also having an end- Wise projecting jaw member and lateral rein- 'lorcing ribs which connect said vmember with the body of the bracket, and means whereby each pair of adjacent jaivs thus provided are secured to a support embraced thereby. Y
In a gear case adapted to besuspended at its ends from spaced supports, tvfo trough-like sections, each comprising an integral rimandl sides, exterior brackets affixed to each section adjacent the respective ends of the rim, each of said braclretscom.
prising a body mounted"V on the rim` and having a thrust portion Which laterally over-4 laps thesection and also having a jawwhich projects endwise beyond ythe section, a detachable coupling device .foreach :pair of ad jacent jaws thus provided at yeach end of the case, and means for securing eachv pair of'jaws and their associated coupling dewire together and to a support embraced by said aws.
Signed at Jersey City inthe county ,ot Hudson and State of New AJersey this 17th day ot October,' A. D; 1921.
