To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS POPKIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an' without great difiiculty and only with such expenditure of time as .to vrendersuch tampering substantially out of the question.
In order that the principle of the invention may be readily understood, I have disclosed certain embodiments thereof in. the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a View partially in side elevation and partially in vertical section ofthe preferredembodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the construction shown in Fig. 1;

It has heretofore been proposed to ,provide a valve to cut off the flow of liquid fuel to the carburetor of an internal combustion engine and to provide a lock for such valve. In, all constructions with which I am familiar, however, the deviceshave been of complicated and expensive construction, and
'moreover have been of such a nature that they can more or less readily be tampered with,'as, for example, cutting out some part or otherwise providing a by-pass or passage for the flow of fluid fuel to the carwith, thus rendering it exceedingly difiicult Specification of Letters Patent.

for a would-be thief to get away with the automobile truck or other vehicle having an internal combustion engine.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the body of a carburetor is indicated conventionally at l in Fig. 1, it being of any suitable construction and containing the usual parts or members not herein necessary to show or to refer to. The body 1 is desirably of metal and in the preferred embodiment of my invention has integrally cast or otherwise integrally formed therewith a projection 2, here shown as a lateral projection, which in turn has preferably integrally formed therewith a casing 3 adapted to receive a: valve 4 and a lock 5. The integral structure thus far described is provided with a passage 6 for the gasolene or other fiuld fuel, and tapped or otherwise suitably attached to said passage is a threaded pipe 7 by which the gasolene or the like is supplied from the usual source.
The interior construction of the casing 3 may be varied in accordance with the scope of my invention, but desirably there is provided a transverse web 0r part 8 having therein a longitudinal opening 9 for the re ception of the valve 1, here shown as of a rotary type and having an opening 10 for the passage of the gasolene or the like. Desirably above the web or the part 8 there is a recess or cavity '11, within which is staitionarily mounted the lock 5, which maybe 'of any suitable construction and which therefore need not be shown in detail. De-
sirably the lock is of the so-called Yale type,
there being provided the usual or necessary tumblers, or other parts. The said lock 5 may have cast therewith or attached thereto a cap or part 12 adapted to receive the end 13 of the lock, said end being provided with the usual slot or opening for the reception of the key 1 1.
Extending from the inner or lower end of the lock 5 is the projection or member 15 that is turned by the key 14 with the rotatable or oscillatory part of thelock. The projection or member is adapted to cooperate in anysuitable way with the valve 9. As herein represented, the said valve is provided with a transverse slot 16 in its upper end to receive the said projection or member 15, sothat when the latter is turned, the valve 4. may be turned into either an open or closed position.
In order to secure the body of the lock 5 in the casing 3, I may provide anysuitablc construction. Herein for the purpose I V have represented the body 5 as having two lateral ears 17, 18 receiving the threaded ends 19, 20 of two bolts 21, 22 positioned in the transverse web 8, the heads of the bolts being accessible at the recess 23 provided at within the scope of the invention thecasing 3 may be secured to the carburetor in a preferably permanent manner, but in such a way as to permit my invention to be applied to carburetors already in use, or of a usual construction or formation or it may be otherwise located within the scope of my invention. The best results are obtained by a carbure tor having the parts 'of my invention integrally formed therewith. It is evident that the lateral projection 2 need not be of the form indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, but may merge into both the carburetorbody 1 and easing 3 in such a way as absolutely toprevent any separation of the casing 3 from the carburetor body 1 by sawing or otherwise,
as shown in Fig. 2.
The key 14? provided for each carburetor lock is preferably of a distinctive form and not interchangeable with other keys. This would minimize the chances that a would-be thief carries with him a key by whichhe can operate the valve 4.
Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, I desire it tobe understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a genericand-de- :scriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope'of the invention being set forth in the following claims: ,7
1. In a fuel lock mechanism for carburetors, the combination with a carburetor of a casing, a lock wholly positioned within said casingand capable of retaining a valve in closed position, said lock being adapted to receive a key through-a wall of said casing, the latter having a relatively heavy, internal, transverse web, means within said casing en gaging said lock and said web to secure said lock in place in said casing, said web having a valve seat and a valve adapted to said seat and adapted to be secured by said lock, and a fuel line connection leading to said carburetor and in which line said casing is p0- sitioned.
2. In a fuel lock mechanism for carburetors, and 't-he like, of vehicles, a casing having communication with, the liquid fuel line of the vehicle, a lock wholly positioned within said casing and capable of retaining a valve in closed position, said lock being adapted to receive a key through a wall of said casing,tl1e latter having a relatively heavy, internal, transverse web, and means within said casing engaging said lock and said web to secure said lock in place in said casing, said web having a valve seat and a valve adapted to said seat and adapted to be secured by said lock.
3. In a fuel lock mechanism for carburetors, the combination with acarburetor of an integral casing, a lock wholly positioned within said integral casing andvcapable of retaining a valve in closed position, said lock being adapted to receive a key through a wall of said casing,.the latterhaving a relatively heavy internal transverse web, and means within said casing engaging said lock and said webto secure said lock in place in said casing, said web having a valve seat and a valve adaptedto said seat and adapted to be secured by said lock. 4. In a fuel lock mechanism for carburetors, thecombination with a carburetor of an integral casing, a lock wholly positioned within said integral casing and capable of retaining a valve in closed position, said lock being adapted to receive a key through a wall of said casing, the latter having "a relatively heavy, internal, transverse web integral with the casing and one orcmore lock members carried by said web and engaging said lock to hold the latter in place in "said casing, said valve having a valve seat, and a valve adapted to said seat and adapted to be secured by said lock. g
5. Ina fuel lockmechanism for carburetors, the combination with a carburetor of an integral casing, a lock wholly positioned within said integral casing and "capable of retaining a valve in closed positi0n,--said lock being adapted to receive a key through a wall'of said casing, the latter having a relatively heavy, thick, internal, transverse Web integralwith the casing, said web having a valve seat and fuel passages leading to and from the valve in said seat, and means with-- in the casing and engaging said lock and said web to securesaid lock in place'in said casing. 7 f j I '6; In a fuel lock mechanism for carburetors, the combination with a carburetor of an integral casing, a. lock wholly positioned within said integral'casing and capable of retaining a valve in closed position, said lock being adapted to receive a, key through-a wall of said casing, the latter having a relatively heavy and thick transverse web, a valve seat in said web and relatively remote from the wall of said casing, a valve adapted to said seat and adapted to be operated by said lock, and fuel passages in said Web to communicate with the valve, and means engaging said lock and said Web to secure the lock in place in said casing.
7. In a fuel lock mechanism for carburetors, the combination with a carburetor of an integral casing, a lock wholly positioned within said integral casing and capable of retaining a valve in closed position, said lock being adapted to receive a key through a wall of said casing, the latter having a rela tively heavy and thick transverse web, a valve seat in said web and relatively remote from the wall of said casing, a valve ada ted to said seat and adapted to be opera by said lock, fuel passages in said web to communicate with the valve and a plurality of bolts passing lengthwise of the casing through said web and threaded into said lock to secure the latter in place.
