Be it known that I, Fnnonnrcn E. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of liIissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Gears and Sheaves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked. thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a combined gear and sheave particularly adapted for use in connection with elevation hoisting mechanism.
One of the objects of the invention is to construct a shaft, a gear rim and a sheave rim of a single piece of metal. the shaft being preferably hollow to provide for the necessary torque between the sheave and the gear.
The sheave gear is generally constructed of bronze whereas the sheave may be constructed of steel or other suitable metal and I have, therefore, provided means whereby the bronze gear may be conveniently fastened to the shaft and I have also provided means for conveniently attaching the sheave thereto.
My invention also contemplates the provision of means for preventing relative movement of the gear with respect to the shaft or of the sheave with respect to the shaft, the construction being such that when the parts are connected together, liability of slippage of any of the parts will be eliminated.

Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference: I
l designates a hollow shaft provided with integral, radial spokes 2 integral with a rim Spaced from the spokes 2 and rim 3 are radial spokes 4 and 5 in spaced relation and staggered one with respect to the other. The spokes 4 are connected by a rim 6 having an offset portion to provide a seat 7 for a flange of the sheave. The spokes are provided with a rim 8 against which one flange of the sheave may rest.
The sheave is shown as consisting of an annulus 9 having inwardly projecting flanges 1.0 and 11, the flange 10 being provided with an offset portion 10 overlapping the offset portion 7 of the rim 6 while the flange 11 rests against the perimeter of the rim 8, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The overlapping oii'setportions 7 and 10 are adapted to be secured together by bolts 12, which pass through them so that the sheave may be fastened to the rim 6. Additional bolts 13 alternating with the bolts 12 extend tl'n'ough the offset portion 10 of the flange 1t) and through notched portions in the peripheral offset portion 7 of the flange 6, the latter bolts being adapted to prevent relative rotation movement of the sheave with respect to the rim 6.
The flange ll rests upon the perimeter of the rim 8 and is supported thereby, the flange 8 being desirable since the sheave is relatively Wide and will be subjected to considerable strain when a rope or cable passes around the same and is received in the grooves 14:.
The rim 3 supports the Worm gear rim 15, having the usual worm gear teeth 16 cut in the perimeter thereof and it is provided with inwardly projecting lugs 17 and 18, those designated 18 being of less length than those designated 17 and alternating therewith. The lugs 17 overlap the rim 3 and are adapted to be secured thereto by bolts 19, which pass through the lugs and through the body portion of the rim 3. The bolts 20 in the lugs 18 align with notches 21in the perimtive movement between the gear ring and its rim, it would be necessary to disrupt practically the entire bolt. Ther could be no shearing of the bolt because the bolt extends entirely through the notches between the gear ring and its rim, a. material advantage over the arrangement shown for the bolts 1.9.
The construction just des" *ibed applies equally to the sheave; therefore, -rotative. movement of the sheave with respect to its rims will. be prevented as effectually as will rotative movement be prevented between the gear ring and its rim.
In actual practice the shaft, the spokes and rims for the gear and sheave may be cast as a single piece, the alternating spokes 4- and 5 for the sheave being adapted to equal ize the strain aboutthe sha'tt when the sheave is subjected to strain, the flange 11 of the sheave being shown as fastened to the rim 8 by overlapping lugs 22, through which the bolts23 pass whilethe gear may be fastened by its overlapping lugs and belts in the manner shown so that when the parts are secured together, liability of slippage either of the gear or the sheave will be eliminated and a built-up structure may be readily pro: vided, admirably adapted to perform the service for which the same is intended.
One of the main features of the invention is the construction and arrangement of the gear ring with respect to its rim and the sheave ring with respect to its rims, and particular attention is caller to the tact that the rim 3 supports the worm gear 15 having the usual worm gear teeth 16 tucked in the perimeter thereof and that the inwardly projecting lugs 18 are ot'less length than those designated 17 and alternate therewith.
It will be noticed that the lugs on the gear rim lie on one side of the rim while the lugs for the sheave ring lie on opposite sides of its rims. This is for the purpose of ease in assembly.
It will also be noted that the outer rim 8 is of less diameter than the inner rim 7, the rim 8 being ot such diameter that the lugs 10 may pass over the same in order to be vantages over similar types in which the hub ot the gear and the hub of the sheave are swaged, keyed or pressed upon the shaft since liability of slippage of the parts will be eliminated, the hollow shaft atl'ording the maximum amount of resistance to the torque generated therein during the operation of the machine to which the invention is applied.

A combined gear and sheave for elevator hoisting mechanism comprising a self sustaining hollow shaft, a gearrcarrying im cast integral with the shaft, a sheave-ca ing rim cast integral with the shaft and in spaced relation with respect to the gearcarrying rini, a removable annulus on the gear-carrying rim, said annulus comprising a gear, and a removable sheave on the sheavecarr 'ing rim, the walls of the hollow shaft, the gear-marrying rim and the sheave-carrying rim being approximately the same thiclc ness to prevent rupture of the parts when the casting is in the process of cooling;
