SAMUEL H. GOLDTHORP, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO R. H. SMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR MAKING GAS FROM OILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140.911, dated July 15, 1873; application filed June 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. Gornrnonr, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves and Retort-s for Gas-Works; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a stove and retort for gas-works, in which the retort surrounds a part of the stove, the shell of the stove forming the inner surface of the retort, as .will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make to the annexed drawings, in which both fig ures represent vertical sections of my invention, showing two different forms of the same. A represents the base of my stove, within which is the ash-drawer B and the grate 0, formed in or attached to the base above said drawer. 1) represents the firepot, placed on the base A; and E E represents the dome of the stove, placed upon said fire-pot. The dome is made in two parts, E and E, as shown.
The fire-pot D and lower part E of the dome may be made cylindrical in form, as shown in Figure 1, the fire-pot being of enlarged diameter, so as to allow of the formation of an annular recess, a, in the upper surface of the same; or these parts may be made somewhat globe-shaped, as shown in Fig. 2, in which case the fire-pot is provided with openings 1) b and surrounded by an exterior shell, G, the upper edges of the fire-pot and exterior shell being connected by an annular flange or plate, in which the annular recess a is formed. In either case, it will be seen, the fire is directly leading to the washer.
underneath said recess, so that lead put in the same will be melted from the heat below, and the lower part E of the dome being placed in said recess it becomes sealed.
Surrounding the part E of the dome'is a shell, H, the lower end of which rests in the lead seal a, and the upper end, constructed with a flange, 01, extending inward and then downward into another lead seal, 0, formed around the upper end of the part E. This part E of the dome, with the surronndin g shell H, forms the retort, into which the oil is fed through a pipe, I. This pipe is bent, as shown at f, to prevent the gas from going back through this pipe. The outer shell H must correspond in shape with the dome E. Around the part E of the dome are a series of flanges, h h, extending outward into the retort, for the purpose of increasing the heating-surface to operate upon the gas. iis the gas-exhaust, The upper part E of the dome is provided with an exit-flue, K, either at the top or either side, and an opening, J, for the insertion of the fuel either at the side or top, and said opening is provided with a door or lid, as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A heating-stove provided with an exterior shell, H, arranged, as described, so that it, with that part of the stove which it surrounds, will form a gas-retort, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The flanges h h, within the retort, formed by the stove and the exterior shell, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of May, 1873.
SAMUEL H. GOLDTHORP.
