Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JACOB OAYLOR, OF EAIRVIEW, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO' I CHARLES E. JONES, OF REDKEY, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTlVA TORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,885, dated July 15, 1873; application fil d i October 12,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB GAYLOR, of Fairview, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cultivators and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction'and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, andto the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Figs. 3 are detail views of the same.
This invention has relation to shovel-plows; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the transversely recessed block, having its outer face plated with metal, and the curved shovel-beams, having formed upon the front edge an eye used in connection with the adjustable diagonal braces, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the draft-beam; B B, the handles, bolted to the beam A at their forward ends, and supported at the rear by the perforated adjustable arms 0, by means of which the handles may be adjusted to different heights. D D designate blocks, recessed transversely to fit close to the beam A, and arranged at the same pitch as the shovel-beams E E, which are made of iron and slightly curved outward and upward, and are fastened to the beam A by bolts passing through the blocks D D and the beam A. Upon the front end of each shovel-beam is formed an eye, e, for the purpose of connecting said beams to the diagonal perforated braces F, which are fastened by means of wooden pins f, and secured in an adjustable manner to the draft-beam, so that they may be adjusted to regulate the depth of the plows.
To convert the plow from a double to a single plow the beams E E, braces F, and the foremost of the blocks D are removed. The left-hand beam, for instance, is then secured to the remaining or right-hand block, which will 'brin g the shovel directly under the beam A. The forked brace G is then secured to the shovel and draft beams.
The brace G is perforated, and capable of adj ustment to regulate the depth of the plow.
The blocks D are plated with metal at their outer face to prevent wear or splitting. This metal plate is shown at 2 on the drawings, and is constructed with a smooth outer surface to provide for the adjustment of the shovel-beam thereon at any proper or desirable angle.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In' a cultivator, the combination of the transversely-recessed block D, having its outer face plated with smooth metal, the laterallyadjustable shovel-beam E, provided with the eye e-and the adjustable perforated braces F, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JACOB OAYLOR.
