IMPROVEMENT IN TREADLES OF SEWING- MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,865, dated July 15, 1873; application filed A June 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. W001), of Mount Sterling, in the county of Madison and State of Ohio, have invented a new and use- .and a bell-crank combined with the treadle mechanism of a sewing-machine, in such manner that the operator can start the machine by a lateral movement of one of the knees, and thus save the labor of starting the wheel by hand. My invention also consists of a holding pawl combined with the balancewheel and a double crank, the object being to prevent the machine from being turned backward, to which a double crank is liable without a holding-pawl.

A is the balance-wheel. B is a pawl-lever pivoted on the crank-shaft. D is a pawl pivoted on said lever and bearing on the periph- E is a bell-crank suspended on a vertical pivot by the side of the balance-wheel, and supporting the pawllever B on one of its ends, while the other end projects at the front so that the knee of the operator ranges alongside of it when the foot is on the treadle, and can be conveniently used to lift the wheel, through the medium of the bell-crank and pawl, by a slight lateral movement against the bell-crank.
