To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bonner IIAINSEY, a citizen of the United States, residiir at Altoona, in the county of Blair and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Switches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway switches.
The object of the invention is to so construct such a switch that when it is locked in position an engine or car can run through it without tearing out the lock-keepers or bending the lever rod and which returns to its initial position afterthepassage of the engine or car.
Another object isto-provide means whereby an engine or car is prevented from picking the switch when passing over it.
Another object is to provide springs for reliably holding the inside rails against the outside rails and thus preventing picking of the switch.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a switch constructed in accordance with this invention; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated a pair of outside rails 1 and 2 are shown, between which are located the inside rails 3 and 1-7 The inside, or switch rails, 3 and 4C are con nected by flat bars or. plates 5 and 6 which are exactly alike in construction and hence one only will be described in detail. The bar or rail 6 which connects the points of the switch is about 3" broad, more or less, and the opposite ends thereof are offset upwardly and bolted to clamping plate 7 carried by the rails 3 and 4: being preferably riveted thereto. Arranged under bar 6 and projectingat its ends beyond the ends of said bar, is a plate 8 which is secured to bar 6 and the clamping plate 7 by bolts 9 to provide for the separation of theseparts when desired the bar 6 being riveted to plate 8 as shownat 9 at point spaced inwardly from the connection of bar 8 in the clamping plates. This bar 8 has an offset central portion 11 forming between it and plate 6 a box-like structure, or housing, the ends of which are apertured, as shown at 10, and have bushings 12 and 13 secured to the inner faces of said ends. i Slidably mounted in these bushings 12 and 13 and extending through the box-like structure, above referred to, is a switch shifting rod 1 1 composed of two sections 15 and 16, the inner ends of which are threaded and screwed into a connecting -m'ember 17. Mounted on these rod sections 15and 16 within the box-like portion of plate 8 are two coiled springs 18 and 19 secured at their outer ends to the flanges 20 of the bushings 12 and 13, the inner ends ofsaid springs en gaglng a flange 21 on the connector 17 Rodzsectio'n 16' extends beyond the track and is shown passed through a hanger 16 and is designed to 'be connected with an actuating lever "not shown.
Brace bars 22 connect the plate member 11 with'the ends of plate 8, as is shown. clearly in Fig. 2, and are apcrtured, as shown at 2d, for the passage of the rod 141-. i
The ends of plate 8 extend beyond the main track rails 1 and 2, as is shown clearly in the drawings, and when the structure. which connects the inner rails 3 and 1, shifted transversely to cause one of the switch rails to engage either the track rail 1 or 2 according to the direction it is designed to direct the car to pass thereovcr one of the springs is put under compression so that when the rod 14; is released this spring will operate to return the switch rails 3 and 4; to normal position, leaving the main track open.
These springs 18 and 19 are also designed to normally hold the switch rail securely in contact with the main track rail, as shown at the right of Fig. 2, so that all danger of a car or engine picking the switch is avoided.
Having thus fully described. my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a switch of the class described, a pair of outer rails and a pair of inner rails, a bar connecting said inner rails, a second bar secured to the first bar and extending beneath the outer railsja box-like structure formed on. the second bar intermediate its ends, a rod slidable through the ends of said box-like structure and adapted to be connected to a switch lever, said rods being in sections, a coupling detachably connecting said sections, a stop carried by the coupling, coil springs on said rod sections hearing at one end against said stop and at their outer ends against the ends of the box-like structure.
2. In a switch 01": the class described, a pair of outer rails, and apair of inner rails, a clamp situated on the inner face of the inner rails, a bar connecting said clamps, a second bar secured to the first bar and to the clamp and extending beneath the outer rails. a box-like structure formed on the second har intermediate its ends, arod slidable through the end of said box-like structure and adapted to be connected to a switch lever, said rod being in sections, a coupling detachably connecting said sections, a stop carried by the coupling, coil springs 011 said rod sections bearing at oneend against said stop and at their other ends against the ends of the box-like structure.
8. In a switch of the class described, a pair of outer rails and a pair of inner rails, a bar connecting said inner rails, a second bar secured to the first bar and extending beneath the outer rails, a box-like structure formed on the second bar intermediate its ends, a rod slidable through the ends of said pair of outer rails and a pair of inner rails,
a clamp provided on the inner face of each inner rail, a bar connecting said cta-mps, a second bar secured to the first bar and to the clamps, and extending beneath 1 the outer rails, a box-like structure formed on the sec ond'bar intermediate its ends, a rod slidable through the ends oi said box-like structure and adapted to be connected to a switch lever,
said rod being in sections,.a coupling detachably connecting said sections, a stop carried by the coupling, coil springs on said rod sections hearing at one end against said stop and at their other ends against the ends of the box-like structure, and braces secured to the ends of the second bar and to its box-like structure.
