To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CURT SCHRAEPLER, residing at Essen-on-the-Ruhr, Germany, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, ave invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mountings for Electrodes wlth Cooled Metallic Heads, of which the followin is a specification.
Theinvention relates to metalhc mountings for electrodes, with cooled metallic heads, to be suspended over the melting baths of electric furnaces, and has for its objects toattain, with such electrodes, first an easy replaceability, without detracting from the value and reliability of the circuitclosure between the mounting and the head .of the electrode, and second, to render it possible to protect from unpermissible heat, the electrode-mounting that contains the conductor. These purposes are attained, according to the invention, by providing the electrode with a metallic, cooled head and by having both the metallic electrodehead and the appurtenant metallic electrodemounting, provided with corresponding conical carrying surfaces, so that upon the suspension of the electrode-head from above,
, loaded with the electrode, the effect of the weight of the electrode will be to enforce such an intimate contact between these parts that from this condition alone, a safe and good conductivity is insured between the electrode head and the electrode mounting to which the conductor is connected.
The accompanying drawing is a longitudinal sectional view showing an illustrative embodiment of the subject of the invention.
The electrode consists of a carbon cylinder A and a metallic head B, which is connected with the cylinder through means of the tap b and arranged in a known manner for the reception of a cooling fluid E. When in use, the electrode rests under its own weight with its metallic head B, which is provided with a conical bearing surface 21 in a correspondingly formed metallic mountin C, which is fixed on the, end of an arm D, w ich arm is intended to be adjustable up and and the electrode head B, anumber of screw bolts 0 are employed, which are jointed to the mounting C in the manner shown in the drawing.

Under the action of the inherent wei ht of the electrode a high pressure exists between the electrode head B and the mounting C upon the conical bearing surfaces 6 which is found in practice to insure a thoroughl reliable and practicable circuit closure. i Vhen the electrode is required to be raised from its bearing for the purpose of replacing the carbon cylinder, it is only necessary to release the connection established by the bolts 0 in order to permit raising of the electrode.
I claim 1. A metallic mounting for a vertically arranged electrode, designed for electrical furnace purposes, said electrode being provided with a cooled metallic head, saidmetallic head being supported by said mounting and being adapted to support the weight of the electrode; said mounting and head being constructed with corresponding conical bearing surfaces to insure intimate electrical contact by means of the weight of the electrode solely.
2. A metallic mounting for a vertically arranged electrode, designed for electrical furnace purposes, said electrode being provided with a cooled metallic'head, said metallic head being supported by said mounting and being adapted to support the weight of the electrode; said mounting and head being constructed with corresponding conical bearing surfaces to insure intimate electrical contact by means of the weight of the electrode solely; and means connected to said head and mounting for securing the mechanical and electrical connection between said parts; said means comprisin screw bolts jointed to one of said parts and engaging in recessesof the other part.
