Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. BISHOP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the county ofMuskegon and State of-Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making attery Jars, of which the f ollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to machines of the type disclosed in my co-pending application Serial No. 317702, tiled August 15, 1919, for making hard rubber receptacles such as battery jars and the like and more particu-- lai'ly to means for folding and forming the base of such receptacles preliminary to vulcanization.
The primary object of the invention is to provide simple and/ efficient means for neatly, uniformly andcompactly folding the lower edges of the walls of the ar body inwardly and downwardly upon the bottom of the jar and sealing the contacting layers in their folded position ready for vulcanization.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for firmly supporting the side walls of the jar during the folding and forming operation so that warping or bulging is eliminated.

The forming die has oppositely disposed lugs 22 provided with openings 2a to receive andY slidably fit about the reduced end portions 26 of the rods 14. This forming die 21 is preferably provided with parallel strips on the operating face 28 thereof, and a pluralityof arms or projections 29 extend outwardly from the bodyl portion of the die to .engage andoperate the folding means.
The folding'head 31 is mounted upon the outer extremities of the rods 14 which pass through the lugs 32 on the head and are secured therein by the nuts 33. The body por tion of the folding head consists of a hollow frame 34 having a flaring mouth 35. Each of the side and end Walls of the frame is formed with an opening 36 therein and a folding member 37 is pivotally mounted in eachofsaid openings. These foldingmembers are preferably constructed with an inwardly projecting iiange 37 along the edge opposite to the pivotal connection to provide a subupon the main frame (not` stantially rectangular inner operating face I `folding head in the manner shown in Figs.

20. ln a machine of the class described, a mandrel having a wrapper applied thereto with one edge thereof projecting beyond the end of the mandrel, a folding head disposed opposite to said mandrel, and hingedljT mounted folding members movableA toward said mandrel to fold said edge inwardly and downwardly upon the end of said mandrel and to press said wrapper against the side wallsof said mandrel during such folding operation.
