PRIMER FOR SMALL-ARMS AMMUNITION.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARLEY T. PECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Warren and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use.- Primers for Small- Arms Ammunition, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the provision of primers for small arms ammunition which shall be of improved composition and efliciency.
The invention is exemplified in the composition of material described in the following specification, larly pointed out'in the appended claims.
At present there are two well-known types of small arms primers, namely, center fire and rim fire primers. A center fire primer is composed of a brass, copper or gliding metal cup into which is loaded under pressure the explosive compound which is ce mented or held in place by gum, collodion, or some other adhesive, or it may be covered by a paper or tinfoil disc'which is held in place by a similar adhesive. Therim fire primers are contained in the head of the cartridge case'within the annular rim or cavity provided for this purpose. The priming composition is introduced by means of centrifugal force and projected outwardly from the center into the cavity. It isheld in place by gum, collodion,,or some suitable adhesive.
Specifically my invention relates to a priming composition of which tri-nitroresorcinol is an ingredient. Tri-nitrore orcinol has 'a chemical formula of C (N 3 (OH) 2 and is represented graphically by the following formula:

of long duration and intense heat. Trinitro-resorcinol as a priming mixture ingredient ,is superior in that it produces a primer which is more uniform in sensitive, ness and therefore the tendency to misfire is much more easily controlled than in other primers. Many of the more recently developed smokeless powders which are designed for the purpose of producing a slow rate of combustion and improved ballistics have one .fault, namely, that they are diflicult' of ignition. A primer containing tri-nitro-resorcinol according to the present invention is of such superior quality that it ignites with great ease the latesttypes ,of improved progressive powders.
In preparing a primer according to the present invention a priming composition comprising substantially potassium chlorate, 35% fulminate of mercury, and 30% antimony sulphide maybe used, to. which may be added 5% or more of trinitro-resorcinol. Five per cent of tri-nitroresorcinol is sufiicient in most cases to produce the effect desired. If still greater ignition powers are wished a larger amount at tri-nitro-res'orcinol may be added. Another priming composition may consist of approximately 5% of tri-nitro-resorcinol added to a rim fire priming composition comprising the following: 40% fulminate of mer- .cury, 40% ground glass, 20% potassium chlorate.
Another composition may include potassium chlorate, 20% antimony sulphide, 30% lead or copper sulphocyanide to which mixture 5% or more tri-nitro-resorcinol is added.
In some cases less than 5% tri nitro-resorcinol may be used, and the tri-nitro-re- 2. A priming composition for ammunition comprising an explosive mixture contaming approximately 5% trl-nltro-resorcinol.
3. A priming composition for ammuni which 'is added tri-nitro-resorcinol to cause 10 tion COIIlpllSlHg a fulminate explosive mixthe mixture to burn in a progressive manner ture containing tri-nitro-resorcinol. and to impart uniformity in sensitiveness 4. A priming com-position for ammunithereto.
