This invention pertaining in general to knitting machines of the straight-row type, has more particular reference to a tension device therefor designed to impose a tension or dra on the yarn drawn to the yarn carrier.
In knitting machines of the straight-row type, the yarn-carrier by reason of its reciprocating'action draws the yarn unevenly, in
fact, to such an extent as to require a special form of elastic take-up for absorbing the erky and unequal drawing action, and also to I'GQIIUI'QIGIISIOII devices designed to 1mpose "an even tension or drag on the yarn to prevent kinking and lri'iotting thereof and to prevent from being caughtand broken on adjacent projections or parts," due to the unven feed. t is the objectoi the present invention to provide a novel means for imposthe desired tension or drag on the yarn, which means shall serve also as an eillcient guide for preventin -the yarn irom throwmg and catching on adjacent parts under the impulses of the uneven feed.
Another object is to provide a tension device of the character in mind which shall cause a substantially uniform tension or drag and which shall also permit passage 01 a knot or any other obstruction on the yarn.

It will be noted that my improvedyarn tension or drag may be employed at any of various positions on a knitting machine and that it is in no way limited tothe particular through the overhead guides, take-up arm and finally to the yarn-carrier. In the drawing, I have" shown the yarn controlled in its passage to the yarn-carrier by structure suchas illustratedin Patent- 1,072 -,365', Septeniber), 1918, andreference may be had thereto for a more thorough descrlption of the yarn-guiding means. The drag memberll is free to rise and fall, and the apertures 14 through which the guide memberslllpass are of sufficient size to allow plenty of play so that the drag member may be tilted on its longitudinal edge 15 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 by the drawaction of the yarn. The guide posts 13 are turned laterally at their upper ends to prevent displacement of the drag member and by reason of this construction said drag member may be withdrawn lengthwise of the posts. Said member may be similarly slid back onto the posts; consequently more than one of such members be slipped onto said guide posts to increase the tension, according to the conditions at hand' The extent of this tension or drag may also be varied by adjusting theposition of the drag member with relation to the opening 12, and to this end I have provided suitable means, such as a screw connection 16 for adjusting the guide posts 13 toward and from the opening 12.
From the foregoing, it will be manifest that as the yarn is drawn through this ten- While I have illustrated but a single working embodiment of my improvements, it should be understood that various changes might be made in the construction without departing from the'spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended. claims, in which-- I claim: v

A yarn tensiondevice comprising a fiat base member having a yarn opening, a tension member in the form of a fiat plate resting on said base member with one. edge adjacent to said opening, means holding said tension member in operative relationtosaid opening, whereby the yarn passing through said opening will extend beneath and across said edge and to the opposite edge of said member and thence upwardly, and said means permitting the tension member to be raised on its first mentioned edgeunder the influence oi they-arnon the. opposite edge.

A yarnrtension device'comprlsing a flat base member-having a yarn opening, a ten- 7 vsion member in the form ofa'fiatplate restingon saidbase member with one edge :adjacent to said opening means holding said tension member in operative relation to said opening, whereby the yarn passing through said 0 iening w ll extend beneath and across said edge and to the opposite edge of said member and. thence upwardly, said means permitting the tension member to be raised on its first memtioned edge under the influence of the yarn on the opposite edge, and means for adjusting said tension member toward and "from said opening, whereby to vary the proximity of said first mentioned edge to said opening.
. 3, yarntension device comprising a base having an opening, a pair of upright post-s supported on said base member and having laterally turned upper ends, a tension plate shaped to slip lengthwise over said posts and to rest on the base member with one edge adjacent to said opening and having a limited tilting movement on said edge as a fulcrum, the yarn passing through said opening, laterally beneath the tension member and being drawn upwardly at the edge of said member farthest from said opening.
A yarn tension device comprising an inclined base member having an opening, a tension member resting on said inclined base member above saidyarn opening, and means holding said tension member in operative position on the base and with capacity to tilt upwardly upon its edge disposed adjacent to said opening, the yarn passing upwardly through said opening, laterally beneath the tension member, and thence being drawn upwardly at the high end of said member. A tension device comprising 'a base, a tension plate resting onthe base and having opposed edges beneath which the yarn is;
.uccessively drawn, the first edge constituting a fulcrum uponwhich the plate may be tilted by the action of drawingthe yarn upwardly over the second edge.
