To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that MAURICE ANDRE Louis ROCHER, a citizen f the Republic of France, residing at Chatellerault, Vienne, France, 27 Rue de lAngelarde, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises Having an Instantaneous Tightening and Loosening Action, (for which I have filed an application in France, August 29, 1918, Patent No. 491,889,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention is directed to an improved vise in which the movable aw is adjustable with relation to a fixed jaw through a rod having threaded connection with said movable jaw, whereby to obtain an approximate adjustment of the jaws, the final clamping adjustment being secured through a cam movement, whereby to secure a quick action in the final tightening or initial loosening of the jaws. I
This Vise is essentially characterized by the use of a movable jaw which may be v drawn suificiently near to the work to be machined, by means of a screw provided with a hand-wheel for determining the adjustment, when the first piece of work of a series begins to be operated upon, without however clamping the latter. The final clamping of the said piece of work is then instantaneously obtained by a cam acting on the fixed jaw for causing an intermediate locking member and consequently the screw and the movable jaw to slide in the frame.
The amount of clamping obtained by the cam may be increased or diminished when the pieces of work to be machined are raw castings or forgings of varying thicknesses. For reducing to a minimum the risks of breaking of large pieces of work, the cam instead of acting directly upon the fixed jaw, acts upon a roller the axis of which has a cross section calculated'in such a manner that a too powerful stress risks at most to shear the latter.

The vise is constituted by a frame A in which can move the movable aw B which is held in the frame by the center plate C secured tothe lower part of the jaw B.-
Through a nut D, fitted in the jaw B, passes a screw E one end of which isprovided with a head E fitting in a recess E made in the immediate'locking members J, K. This screw is operated by a milled nut Q secured on the end E The member J serves as a support. for a cam N, provided with a heel N and which can be actuated by a tail piece N by pivoting about a spindle O screwed in the member J.
A. flange M secured by screws to the frame will act as an abutment for the cam when releasing the device.
In the fixed jaw H is secured, by any suitable means a member L upon which acts during the rotation the cam N. v
I The operation of this vise will be as follows:
According to the thickness of the pieces of work to be clamped the movable jaw B is moved sufliciently near to thepiece of work (at about 20 millimeters therefrom), by means of the screw E which is actuated by the handle Q. This distance is adjusted for the entireseries f pieces to be. machined. The final clamping is obtained by acting on the tail piece N of the cam N for causing the latter to turn about its axis 0 and bringing the most eccentric portion in contact with the member L. By reason of the eccentricity of the cam, the member is pushed back and slides in the frame A drawing along the screw E and, consequently, the movable jaw B, which latter acts upon the piece of work to be clamped.
If by reason of a slight difference 1n the sizes of the piece of work to be machined, the latter is not slightly clamped, it will simply be necessary to impart a slight movement to the screw E for obtaining immediately aperfect clamping action.
The releasing of the piece of work is obtained by causing the cam to rotate in the reverse direction. In-this movement the heel N of the cam acts upon the flange M,
secured to the frame, for pushing back the member whereby the jaw B is moved away from the jaw H.
When it is desired to clamp pieces of work the surfaces of which are not parallel, it is simply necessary to remove the jaw B and to replace it by the jaw RS shown in Figures 9, 10 and 11, the operation of the vise remaining the same.
The transformation into an ordinary vise is'efi'ected by removing the spindle O and the cam N and by securing the intermediate locking member to the frame by means of a screw U which is provided with a cylindrical part U fitting in "a hole A. in the frame A. The tightening and releasing of the jaw B are effected by means of the screw E the milled handle of which is replaced by a crank P.
The transformation into multiple use apparatus consists in replacing the existing jaws by other of suitable profiles.
. The modification illustrated in Figures 14 to 17 allow:
1. The replacement of an ordinary jaw by a balljaw the clamping portion of which may be instantaneously replaced by a clamping portion of suitable profile.
2. The construction of the fixed jaw by casting the same with bosses between which is adjusted the member carrying the clamp ing part and serving as a bearing for the cam during the clamping action. The cam acts upon a roller the axis of which has a cross section calculated in such a manner as to reduce the risks of. breaking.
3. The progressive tightening and releasing of the vise by modifying the profile of the cam and by obtaining a permanent contact of the said cam on the roller serving .for the tightening and on the flange serving for releasing the vise. V j
4. The protection of the screw threads of thescrew in all its position by means of a protecting member surrounding the upper part.
The jaw B is provided with a recess a in which enters the part b 6 of the clamp 0. The part b is held in place by the screw (l which is screwed in the body of the jaw. The fixed and jointed clamps are both providedwith the part Z) in the shape of a ball, but the jointed clamp utilizes this ball for placing itself parallel to the member to be clamped.
The connection of the two jaws is the same as in the first construction as well as the intermediate member J. V
The cam N is secured by the spindle 0, but instead of acting upon the-fixed abutment L, acts upon a roller 6 the-axis f of of which has such a cross section that it will be sheared when the stress exerted by the cam will be too powerful. This axis f is secured in a part 9 adjusted between two bosses it i integral with the frame'A. The part 9 is held in position by the clamp j which is connected to the'bosses h z' by screws or other suitable devices.
The cam N has a profile permitting the progress tightening of the vise and maintaining it in permanent contact, on the one hand, with the roller 0 and, on the other hand, with the flange M which serves for releasing the vise. The smallest rotationin one direction or the other produces the dis lacement of the movable jaw.

Claims. I
1. A vise comprising a frame plate formed with a longitudinal recess laterally enlarged in its lower portion to provide shoulders, a jaw carrying block slidable in said recess, a jaw carried thereby and slidably mounted on top of the frame plate, a second jaw fixed to the frame plate, an adjusting block slidably mounted in said recess below the fixed jaw, a rod mounted in the adjusting block for rotative movement only, said rod having threaded connection with the jaw carrying block,a cam element rotatably mounted on the adjusting block and having cam cooperation with the fixed jaw, and means cooperating with the shoulders of the recess to hold the jaw carrying block and cooperating parts in the recess.
2. A vise having a frame plate formed in the upper portion with a longitudinally extending open ended recess, the bottom of the plate havingan interrupted recess'communicating with the first mentioned recess, a jaw carrying block slidably mounted in the opening in the block may register to re- 10 ceive means for securing the adjusting block with relation to the frame plate, a cam member carried by the adjusting block, and an abutment carried by the jaw fixed to the frame plate to be engaged With such earn 15 member.
