ALEXIS O. ROBERTS, OF GREENE ISLAND, AND JAMES J. O KEEFE AND ARTHUR F. BURBY, OF WATERVLIET, NEW YORK.
COMBINED SUPPORT AND GUIDE FOR SLIDING DOORS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Animals 0. ROBERTS, JAMES J. OKnnrn, and ARTHUR 1*. Boner, each a citizen of the United States of Amen ica, residing respectively at No. (38 Paine St, Greene Island, New York, No. 2414 Eleventh Ave, lVatervliet, Albany County, New York, and No. 2415 Tenth Ave, lVatervliet, Albany County New York, and whose post-oilice addresses are the same as their residence addresses, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Supports and Guides for Sliding Doors, of which the following. is a specification.
Our invention relates to door support and guide mechanism, and the objects of our invention are to provide an improved combined support and guide for sliding doors which will be particularly adapted for use on freight cars; which will have a readily adjustable door guide whereby the device may be adapted to lit doors of different thicknesses; and whose essential parts are device is in position on the car,
)Ve accomplish our objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation.
Fig. et is a side elevation.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view.
The same reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings: A, is the body member, and B, the back bearing plate, each being provided with a suitable recess in which to mount an end of the shaft, G, bearing the roller, F, adapted to have hear thereon the door to be supported. Suitable V dowels (not shown) are preferably provided to assure proper alignment of the parts, A and B, The roller, F, is adapted to turn upon the shaft, G, and the shaft, G, may also be so fitted that it may turn in its bearings.
On the body member, A, are provided the lugs, N, N, having openings, 0, 0, therethrough and in line with the openings, 6, Z), in the back bearing plate, B.
The bolts or rivets which are used to attach the device to the car are to pass through the lugs on both the body member and the back bearing plate, so that when the device Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 14, 1922,
Application filed July 2, 1921.
Serial No. 482,168.
is fastened in place, all the essential parts (other than the bolt, P,) will be non-separable.
In the lower portion of the body member, A, is formed. a rectangular opening adapted to receive and to fit slidably on the tongue, E, of the door guide member, C. A headed pin, H, passing through the slotted holes,
J and K, in the body member and a slotted hole, L, in said tongue, fastens said door guide member in said body member, but permits of a limited sliding movement of the guide member.
A series of holes, S, in the body member, A, and another series, B, in the tongue, E, (in line with the holes, S, but diiferently spaced) provide means for adjusting the position of the door guide member by use of the bolt, P. In the device illustrated only two positions are provided for, but it is obvious that a greater number may be provided by increasing the number, and changing the spacing of, said holes.
The portion of the door guide member projecting above the roller, F, is preferably provided with inclined surfaces, D, D, on
the door engaging side thereof.
By referring to Figs. 1 and l, it will be readily seen that when our device is applied to a car it becomes impossible to remove any of its component parts (except the bolt, P, whose sole function is to hold the door guide member in adjusted position) without first removing the device from the car. This because of the fact that the attachment bolts or rivets bind the body member and back plate together and until they are separated none of the others, except as before mentioned, can be removed.
In Fig. 1 the side of the car is represented by Z, the space between that line and the upper portion of the door guide member, C, being available for the lower edge of the car door.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a combined support and guide for sliding doors, a body member with attachment ears thereon; a door guide member slidably mounted in said body member; means for limiting the movement of said guide member in, and preventing the withdrawal of said member from, the body mem her; a roller mounted in, and the surface thereof projecting beyond, said body memher; and a back plate with ears thereon, said cure said back plate firmly against said body member.
2. In a combined support and guide for sliding doors, a body member with attachment ears thereon; a door guide member slidably and adjustab-ly mounted in said body member; means for limiting the sliding movement of said guide member in, and preventing the Withdrawal of said mem er from, the body member; means for fastening said door guide member in adjusted position; a roller mounted in, and the surface thereof projecting beyond, said body member; and a back plate with ears thereon, said ears, and the attaching ears on said body member being so arranged that the means used to attach the device in position will secure said back plate firmly against said body member.
i'astening said guide member in adjusted position; a back plate with openings therethrough and in line with the. openings through the attachment ears of the body member when said plate is in position on said body member; and a shaft, with a roller thereon, mounted in and between said body member and said back plate.
In testimony Where'ot We have allixed our signatures.
ALEXIS o. nonnn'rs. JAlvlES J. OKEEFE. ARTHUR F. BURBY.
