Description
A. WHEAT.
Splints.
Patented July 8,1873.
Attorneys.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
ARA WHEAT, OF OANAAN, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPLINTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 140,662, dated July 8, 1873 application filed Juno 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARA WHEAT, of Ganaan, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Splint, of which the following is a specification My improved splint for the lower limbs consists of a thigh-piece, leg-piece, and a heel and foot piece in three separate sections, of light wood, curved or concaved both lengthwise andcrosswise, suitably to fit the different parts, the thigh and leg piece being connected by a hinged joint, the foot and leg piece by an extension-joint, and the lower joint and upper section provided with extension-screws, all as hereinafter described.
My invention is an improvement in sectional adjustable splints, and consists in a swiveled extension-rod connected with the upper hinged section, and a sliding bar and screw extension-rod in combination with the footpiece and middle section of the splint, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved splint, and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
A represents the thigh section; B, the leg section; and G and D, the heel and foot section all of which are made of light soft wood, and, except the foot, concaved on the front sides in both directions to fit the respective parts. The principal longitudinal curve is at a in the leg-piece for the calf, and below this part it assumes a straight or slightly convex line just above the ankle-joint. The heel-piece is hollowed out suitably to receive the heel, but the foot-piece is straight or nearly so; it
is mortised into the heel-piece at right angles 7 to the lower end. The thigh-piece and legpiece are hinged together at E, and provided with a hasp, F, on one, and a perforated plate, G, on the other, by which they can be adjusted at any angle to which it may be required to bind the knee; and the thigh-section has, a screw-rod, H, with a swivel, I, at the upper end, by which it is attached to the strap which binds the upper end of the splint tothe leg, which said rod passes through the eye J and screws into the nut K on the side of the thighsection, to effect, in part, the extension of the thigh also the lower extremity of the leg when the foot is attached to the piece D. The sections B and O are connected together by the slide-joint L, and are provided with the adjusting-screw M, by which the extension is mainly effected whether the fracture be above or below the knee.
Haviii g thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The swivel I, extension-rod H, support J, nut K, and binding-strap N, combined with section A, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the sections B and G D, sliding joint L, and extension-rod M, substantially as specified.
ARA WHEAT.
