To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDGAR C. JULIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elwood, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rubber-Boot Repairers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for applying patches to rubber boots, shoes and other articles. Heretofore the prevailing method has been to place the patch on the outside of the article to be mended and to apply heat necessary to make a seal on the inside of the article.
An object of my invention is to provide means for applying the heat under pressure on the outside directly to the patch itself, placed at any position. 1
I accomplish'the above, and other objects which will hereinafter appear, by the mechanism illustratedin the accompanying drawing,'in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my apparatus with the attachn ent for applying a patch anywhere on the left side of a boot. Fig. 2 is a view insideelevation of the same apparatus except that it has a substitute attachment for applying patches to the back and front portions of a boot. Fig. 3 is a view in front elevation and partial vertical section of the same apparatus with the substitute attachment for applying patches to the right side of a boot. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the attachment for applying patches to the front and back of a boot, the attachment being removed from other parts of the device. -Fig'. '5 is ajperspectiveview of the attachment, removed from the appa ratus, for applying patches to the left side of a boot and Fig. 6 is the attachment for applying patches to the right side of the article to be repaired.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views of the drawings.
A steam generating boiler 7 Fig. 1, is tapped to receive a pipe 8 which gets a supply of steam from the boiler, the amount of which is controlled by valve 9. The pipe 8 is substantially horizontal, and has an upwardly vertical end pipe 10 and a like vertical pipe 11 which enter the opposite ends of a hollow semi-circular body 12. This body is hollowed out on its under side to form the concave surface 13 to the top portion of which the article to be mended is; held with the patch against said surface in a to be hereinafter described. 1
At the to of the body 12 is a vent-cock 141 to let the air out, and from the top face of the body 12 is an integral standard 15 having an ear 16 at its upper end extending laterally to the rear with a hole therethrough, and at the lower end of the standard under the car 16 isal'bo'ss 17' having a socket in vertical alinement with thehole in the ear 16. A shaft 18 passes through the hole in the car 16 and has a toe at its lower end which'is seated in the socket in theboss 17. The lower end of the-shaft above the toe is screwthreaded, and onthe upper end of the shaft is a hand wheel 19 for the manipulatiton in a rotary manner of the shaft. A horizontal head 20 has an car at one end with a screw threaded opening through which the shaft 18 is screwed in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with the car on head 20 between the members 16 and 17 of standard 15. The head 20 hasa vertical integral standard 21 which terminates above the ear 16 with a similar ear 22,hav-
manner 'ing a hole through which. shaft 18 is passed for the purpose of holding and guidinghead 20 in its vertical adjustments by means of shaft 18. The head 20 also has a'horizontal integral arm extension 23 past the standard 15, and the standard 1-5 has a plateexten sion 24 in thesame direction as arm 23, against which plate the arm 23 has a bearing, in a suitably recessed "portion of said arm of a depth approximating the thickness of theplate'24fi' l Onthe; adjacent end of arm 23 is a metal bar 25, one end 'ofwhich overlaps the plate 24 to retain the plate between it and arm 23 witha sliding fit, the tightness of which is regulated by a set screw 26 passingfthrough the bar- 25 into arm' 23. A dowel-pin27 shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, holds the horizontal position of bar 25. The arm 23 and plate 24, extended as they are, increase the bearing support for the head 20, which is essential in maintaining the position of a clamping block 28, supported by means of a. bent arm 29 from said head 20. To this end the head 20 has a longitudinal slot on one side in which an end 30 of arm 29 is seated. The end has a longitudinal adjustment which is retained by a plate 31 which is clamped against the end 30 by means of wingscrews 32. The end 30 is thus adjustable surface it contacts to impinge the wall of the boot between itand the concave surface 13 of the hollow steam-body 12. The block 28 has a longitudinal underside slot in which a re-.
duced end of arm 29 is seated and to which reduced end the block is held by a dowelpin 33. i a The body portion of the arm 29 varies in shape with the work to be done-that is, so as not'to interfere in reaching the place to be patched by contact of the boot top with the arm. Thus, for applying patches to thefront and baclr'of a boot, an arm bent in U-shape and not laterally of the plane of the ends of the arm, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4:, is best suited to receive and hold the boot with the patch squarely between the steam-body 12 and the block 28. But to enable patches on the sides to be reached the arms bent laterally as shown inlFigs. 1 and 5, are best for reaching the left side, and bent in the opposite direction as shown in Figs. 3 and 6, for reaching patches on the right side. Thus the stems of the U are bent to the right or left, as the case may be, approximately at right angles and then the loop as a whole is turned upwardly, the lower stem being connected withthat portion carrying the block 28 by a substantially horizontal member 35. These arms are interchangeable and proper substitution will be made to suit the particular work in hand.
In the operation of my. device a boot with a patch to be vulcanized is placed on the block 28 in a conveniently lower position, and then the block is raisedby rotating the shaft 18 until the position of the boot where the patch is, is tightly pressed against sur face 13 of steam-body 12, and the vulcanization is speedily accomplished. because the heat is directly applied to the patch instead of through the wall of the boot'to the patch. Having thus fully. described my invention, what I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent is-. i y 1. In a device forthe purposes specified, a hollow bodyheated by steam having a curved surface and a standard, a hand-screw supported by the standard, a head moved toward or from the hollow body by the screw, an arm supported by the head and a block on the arm adapted to be placed inside of the article to be patched and the patch on the article brought into contact with said curved surface of the hollow body by the manipulation of the screw.
2. In a device for the purposes specified, a hollow body heated by steam having a standard on its upper side and a concave surface on its lower side, a hand-screw supported by the standard, a head moved toward or from the hollow body by the screw, a bent arm removably supported by the head and a block on the arm adapted to be inserted in the article to be patchedand said article brought into contact with the curved surface of the hollow body by the manipulation of the screw.
3. In a. device for the purposes specified, a hollow body heated by steam having a C011- cave surface, a hand-screw, a screw-support ing means on the body opposite said concave surface, a head moved toward or from the hollow body by the screw, a substantially 'U-shaped arm adjustably and removably attached at one end to thehead, and a block on the other end of the arm adapted to be inserted in the article to be patched and moved by the screw toward the hollow body to clamp a patch on saidarticle against the concave surface of said body. In a device for the .purposesspecified, a hollow body heated by steann'a hand-screw, screw-supporting means carried by the body, a head moved toward or from the hollow boc y by the screw, a substantially U-shaped arm having a major portion of the arm remote from its ends bent laterally of a plane in which the ends are located adj ustably and removably attached at one end to the head, and a block on the other end of the arm adapted to be inserted in the articles to be patched and moved by the screw toward the hollow body to clamp the patch on said article against said body.
