Description
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcEf WILLIAM n. I vERsoN, or oscEoLa, wIscoNsrN, AssIGNoa or ,ONE-rim To Homan.
` F. EHLE. or MLNNmroms, MINNESOTA' BAG nomme).
Ble itknown that I,.Vl7iLL1AM H. IvERsoN, a citizen of the United States, vresiding at ..0sceola, in the county of Polk and State of vNisconsim have invented certain new and useful Improvements in -'Ba l-lolders;V and l do hereby-declare the fol owing to be ay full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such. as willenable others skilled in theart to which it a'ppertains to make andv use the same.
My present invention has'vfor its-object toY provide, an extremely simple and highly eliicien't bag holder, and4 to such ends, generally stated, it consists of the novel de- -vi'ces and combinations ofV devices herein- Q' after ldescribed and defined inthe claim...-
Y by hand operations or from a machine, but is,
especially adapted for the first noted'use. It is adjustable both'to bags of different,Y ylength and to bags ofdiilerent cross dimen-,
v"and moreover, without di 4capableof holding bags; that vary a eat deal in cross dimensions, orwidth, it is set, it is capable ofbeing operated to.
Myfimproved bag holderisadapted for general use wherever it is necessary to hold a bag in Yan open position for filling, either sions.` It is adapted to lbe uickly adjusted,
fter
grip or to release a bag simply by ymanipulation of a foot lever'.l
In the accompanying drawingswhich illustrate the invention in lit'svpr'eferred `form,`
like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
y j Referring to the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a front `elevation of the improved bag holder; f
Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the same;
Fig. 31 is a Ahorizontal section taken on the line 3-3 Vof Fig. 1;
Fig. L1 is a detail partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section showing a por- Specification of LettersPatent.i
erent "setting, is-- that the` device may be used'as a truckto wheel away a filled bag, 'as will presently more' clearly appear. l
' Also, 'rigidly secured to the base 8 is a,
bracket 9 which, at one end-is in theform of an upright yoke 10, one side of which is formedwith ratchet-like teeth 11.- 'A foot lever k12 is pivoted to the; bracket 9 by 'a bolt p v Patented FebI, 1922.y fap'pueation'aiedcmay 13,1915. se'ria1N.234,oes. f i
13 which also preferably yconnects the said 'bracketlto the lower portionof the column 6. The lever 12 is provided vwith a doof-actving lug 14 that is engageable vwith and disengageablec'fromthe ratchet teeth 11 by slightlateral movement ofthe lever V12.
Mounted toslide telescopically on the upper portion 'ofthe column/6 is a pair kozt' heads in duplicate. i The lower head'16 is arranged 15-1'6 which are preferably castings -made to be adjustably locked to thecolumn 6 by a set screw 17 while the upper head 15 is free to slidevertically on the vsaid column.
The relatively `,movable'upper head 15 hasv a rearwardly projectingcap screw 1 8: that adapts rit to' bev adjustably securedv tok af knotchedbar ojr"rod extension 19. This -'notched bar 19 lhas alongitudinal. slot 19a through which the cap screw 18 `i s i passed, and preferably', and as shown, a rectangular washer 18?' is placedon thisfscrew" 18, and by the head thereof, isjs'eated in the proper notch of the'bar 18 so as to efectually prevent slippingofthe saidbar in respect to the head 15. j
The lower end of this bar 19l is rigidlysecured to the upper end Otan actuatin rod 20, the lower end of which is adapte to be pivotally held in any one of several longitudinally spaced holes 21 in the foot lever 12. This rod 20 is made withv a bend, as best shown in Fig. 1,v so that it will spring considerably underjthe downward force applied thereto Vfrom the lever 12.
To the opposite sides of the lower adjustable but relatively fixed head 16, is pivoted a pair of bag holding levers 22, which, at their outerorfree ends, are provided with laterally projecting arms 23that terminate in retaining fingers 24 preferabl equipped atl their ends with barbs 25. Pre erably, the said parts 22, 23,' 241V and 25 are formed integral from a single flat bar and it will be noted that the place where the sov leo
.Links 26 are'pivoted to the .opposite lsides of the movable head15 andfto the intermedie. ate portions of the respective levers 22. '-7 n The numeral 27 indicatesa sheet metal shield ordeflecting plate adapted to be dee tachably hungon': the upper portion of the column, and as shown, provided with av reartion it will drop until its flange 28 restslupon the'upper head 15.
The lower so-called relatively fixed head 16y should be adjusted so that when the sack is'v held with its mouth spread open by the arms,
its bottom will rest on the platform or base i 8.1"In applying the sack tothe holder, its open mouth is spread and attached over the four` corne-rs afforded by the two lug portions 23,andrwhen thus applied, the open mouth 'of the bagwill be heldin rectangular formaf tion so that the grain or other material may be readilyv shoveled or otherwise delivered into the sack. To secure the sack spread open "Visure, interlocks its dogl lllvwith one or the j other ofthe ratchet teeth 11. When the sack in this manner, the operator stepson the free end of the foot lever 12, and byrlateral pres-v has been filled, the lever is released by crank' ing or pressing laterally, so as todi'sengage its dog 14 from the ratchet tooth.andwhen ythis is done, the sack can, of course be easily same.
removeflV from the holding arms.v Thebend Aor spring in ,the connecting rod20 permits A,the lever 12 to be properly engaged with the open.
Of course, thereis such movement'of the 1 levers 22 that sacks varying considerably in transverse dimension or cross section may be held without varying the adjustmentof the shield@ For sacks of different width or transf" l i verse dimensiomdifl'erent shields may be employed, if desired, and when. several are emil ployed, the one maybe easilysubstituted for the other.
when thesaokis fined and while if; is Sail truclto wheel. theL sach to a desired point distant vfrom the point of llin'g.y
"This improved sack .holder may belrrmade at comparatively smallcost, and in practice, Y
has been found highly efficient for thejpurposes had in view. v vj y What I claim isf Af bag holder comprising a vertical standheld by the` arms, the device may be used as aVV I ard, bag holding means on thestandard inj cluding amovable head,.a foot lever pivoted f i Ai 7ok to the standard and extended to one side thereof, an actuatingrod of spring metal conf-l necting the movable head vto the foottlever,
