NAPOLEON W. WILLIAMES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR I TO WILLIAM C. BAKER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DROP-LIGHTS FOR CHANDELIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,565, dated July 1, 1873; application filed April 3, 1873.
The invention consists in applying a curved plate-spring to the clamp-dogs, whose friction holds the slide-tube at the height required, so that a yielding resistance will be assured 'and the wear on dogs automatically taken up. It also consists in providing plane contact surfaces on the dogs in that portion which bears upon the slide-tube.
Figure is a side elevation, partly sectional and partly broken away, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the plate-spring, in which the clamping-dogs are held with a yielding pressure.
In the drawing, A represents the ordinary gas-pipe that supplies chandeliers, and B the chamber from which gas is distributed to the surrounding burners. G is a tube passing up into the gas-pipe A, and D a nut that screws on nozzle of rubber tube E and holds the latter fixedly to the former, so that it will receive a supply of gas from the pipe A. F is a tube that slides over the rubber pipe, which becomes visible when the drop-light is used, and is provided at its base with the globular chamber G, in which the rubber pipe is coiled when the drop-light is carried up and not in use. H is a curved spring apertured in the middle and fastened between two collars, c c. It has an elongated slot,'h, and two eyes, h h, at each end, in which are pivoted the clamping or camdogs I I. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A friction-clamp to hold sliding tube F, consisting of a curved plate-spring having a dog pivoted in each end thereof, as and for the purpose described.
2. The dogs that act upon the slide F, made with plane faces h h, as and for the purpose set forth.
