1917; Russia, arch. 24, 1917, and April, 6.
1917 England, Feb. 22, 1917,) of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to telephone and wireless telegraphy installations, and it concerns more particularly installations of the U. S. patent application S. N. 174,633, filed June 13, 1917, of which the present application is a division, i. e. installations comprising, as amplifier, at their receiver stations, a certain number of audions having each a filament heated-by an electric current and two different electrodes i. e., a grid and a plate, the second one (plate) is connected on the one hand, through a resistance to a source ofcurrent and on the other hand, through a condenser,
' to the first electrode (grid) of the next audion; the first electrode of the first audion being connected to the line.
The invention has for its object to complete installations of such kind by certain auxiliary connections having for their object to modify the'amplifying.
It has been proposed in the patent application S. N. 174,633 to connect the plate of one audion to the grid of the same andion or to the grid of one of the preceding audions.
In that form it is however often very difficult to ensure a regular working; it is frequently interfered with bythe fact that the connection bein too strong, the apparatus comes by itself into a state of electr1c oscillations detected at the telephone in the form of various whistling noises.
According to the present invention a connection'is established between the plate of one audion' and that of one of the preceding audions. V
Apart from this main arrangement, the inventlon comprises other arrangements more fully described in the folio.
In the accompanying drawings Figs. 1 to 3 show diagrammatically receiver stations established according to the invention.
The installations shown in the drawings comprise a certain number of special audions a a a a,"each having a filament a a a a a first electrode (grid) a a a .a' and a second electrode (plate) a a i allOOOa 'mary batteries) intended to supply current for heating the filaments a a; which are connected in parallel to the terminal of the-said source;
another source of electricity "0, "intended to produce the tension 4) in the plates c a one of the terminals of the said source bein connected to the terminal of opposite p0 arity of the source of electricity 6 and to one of the receiver terminals e of the installation and the other terminal of the said source 0 being connected through resistances d 03 of the audions. I
In such installations the grid of each au dion is connected through a condenser F, f to the plate of the preceding audion; and the ed, if'desired, through a condenser f, to the second terminal e of the installation; and
IHOOO a a source of electricity Z).(storage or prirespectively to'the plates grid of the first audion is connecttentiometer 9' connected across the terminals of a source of current 70, one of theterminals of which is connected to the positive terminal of the source of current I), owlng to which the mean voltage of, the grid can be fixed at a suitable value,
According to the invention the amplification obtained with such installat ons 1s modified by establishing a connectlon between the plate of one audion and that of one of the preceding audions.
The two plates which are connected together are suitably selected.
It isknown that thevariat on of voltage the plate is of opposite sign with respect ice to' the variation of the grid of the same audion. lln fact, in case of an increase of voltage of the grid a the intensity or the current passing in the plate a of the same audion increases and as the current passing in the plate of an audion a increases, the loss of potential increases in the corresponding resistance ai and consequently the potentialin the plate a decreases; this results in a-corresponding decrease of the voltage of the grid of the next audion and so on; these variations being now negative and now positive, and generally speaking, alternately negative and positive.
Now if it is desired to increase the am plification ot the installations the two plates to be connected together must have variations out voltage otthe same sign, for instance the plates of two audions separated by a third one.
Contrariwise, it it is desired to reduce the amplifying the two plates to be connected together must have variations of voltage or opposite sign, for instance the plates oi. two consecutive audions.
This connection can be ensured, as well in telephony as in telegraphy either as shown in Fig. l, by a capacity m, the two electrodes of which are respectively connected to the two lates of the two audions, or, as
shown in lFlg. 2, by a resistance n.
in a very general manner, the connection can be obtained as shown in Fig. 3, by connecting a variable point of the resistance at of one audion to another variable point of the resistance d of another audion with interposition in the connection or an adjustable resistance 0 and it necessary of a ca acity g0. I a everal of these connections can exist ointly in one and the same apparatus.
Obv1ously the invention is not limited to the methods particularly indicated, but comprises on the contrary any modifications wltlllll the scope of the claims.
Hav ng now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention, we declare that what we claim is:
l. lln a receiver station for telephone and wireless telegraphy, installations having a number or audions, each audion comprising a filament heated by an electric current and two dlfierent electrodes namely a grid. and a plate, the plates of the respective audions being connected each through a resistance to one pole of a source of current of suitable voltage, the other pole of which is connected to one ofthe receiver terminals, the grid of the first audion being connected to the other receiver terminal, the grid of each of the other audions being connected through a condenser, to the plate of the rei spectlve preceding audion, and means for modifying the amplifying efiect of the ing i i incense to one of the receiver terminals, the gridot the first audion being connected, on the one I hand, to the other receiver terminal, and on the other hand, through a resistance, to a fixed positive voltage point, and the grid of each of the other audionsbeing, on the one hand, connected, each through a condenser, to the plate of the preceding audion, and on the other hand, to said fixed positive voltage point through a resistance for each grid, and a connection having a suitable impedance, said connection being established between the plates of two suitably selected audions.
