ROAD ernannte.
n Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 31,1922.
Application filed November 2, 1920. Serial No. 421,337.
To all whom t may concer/n.' Be it known that I, RICHARD S. BAT-ns, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in thel county of Logan and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improve-ments in Road Graders, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has fory its objectto provide a road grader characterized by the capacity to pulverize the dirt raised by a grader blade, and to throw such dirt to the road bed.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof Figure 1 is a side elevation-of the grader constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention of which I am cognizant.'
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figures 3, 4 and 5 are enlarged detail views of one of the knives comprised in the ader; Figure 5 being taken in the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of therviews of the drawings.
In addition to an appropriate frame l, supported by ground wheels 2, my novel grader comprises a grader blade 3' and rotary cutters and throwers 4; the said rotary cutters and throwers being arranged 1n a pair and in the relation illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 to the grading blade 3. The grading blade 3 is shown as connected through a rod 5 with one arm of a lever 6,
' fulcrumed at 7 on the frame 1, and having lerably of internal combustion type.
its other arm connected to a rack bar 8 that is intermeshed with a spur gear 9 fixed w1th respect to a hand wheel 10 through the-medium of which the grading blade 3 may be adjusted and adjustably fixed byan attendant standing upon the platform 11. however, is no-t of the essence of my invention, and I would therefore have it under.- stood that the grading blade 3 may be c onnected with the frame 1 in any appropriate manner that will permit of the said blade 3 being adjusted vertically.
Carried on the frame 1 is a motor 12, priefe drive shaft 13 of the said motor is connected with the upright shafts 14 of the rotary cutters and throwers so as to rotate said cutters and throwers in opposite directions; the
This,l
specific driving connection illustrated including a miter gearY 15 on the shaft 13, an auxiliary shaft 16, a miter gear 17 fixed on said shaft 16 and intermeshed with the miter gear 15,-a second miter gear 18 fixed on the shaft' 16, a miter 19 fixed on one shaft 14 V and intermeshed with the miter gear 18, and
intermeshed spur gears 20 fixed on the twoshafts 14. g K 1 .7
` In addition to a shaft 14 each rotarycutter and thrower includes a plurality of knives 21, specifically shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5; the knives of the two cutters and throwers being arranged in the relation clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, it being rememberedv in this connection that the cutters andthrowers are synchronously rotated in opposite direction.
Each of the said knives 21 is adapted at 22 to be fixed to its respective upright shaft, and each is provided with a back wall 23, disposed at right angles to its body 24, and
has the edge of its said body 24 sharpened, as
indicated by 25, sharpened edge extending from the outer end of the wall 23 to the inner thickened or enlarged portion-26 of the knife.
In the practical use of my novel grader,
it Will be understood that in operation the rotary cutters and throwers will serve to suiciently pulverize and deliver dirt to the road bed as the dirt is plowed up by the blade 3. In this connection it will be noted that the outer end of the blade 3 is positioned at a point between the radii of the knives of the two cutters and throwers, at which point the dirt from the blade 3 is delivered to the cutters and throwers. It will also be noticed that the knives Vare heavy and broad and are somewhat curved in the direction of their lengths so as to enable them to catch the dirt as they pass through the same and to carry the dirt withthem and deliver the same to the road bed. This result is attained in large measure by the provision of the walls 23 on the knife bodies 24. It will also be understood that the knives of the two cutters and throwers move outwardly from between said cutters and throwers; that the knives do not interfere in any measure with each other; and that the knives of the two cutters and throwers operate to carry slices of dirt from the blade 3 between the two cutters and throwers, whereupon the latter operate to throw the dirt outwardly to the road bed and contribute to the making of a grade.
It will be apparent from the foregoing throwing the dirt is simple, compact and strong, and that it is highly eicient for the purpose ascribed to it.
Having described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patn ent', is
l. In a road grader, the combination with a grader blade., of aV pair of rotary cutters and throwers .to pulverize and deli-ver dirtraised by the blade; each oi the said cutters and tlirowers having knives With angula-rly Vdispesed backs, and the knives oi the tivo cut-ters and throwers being` arranged t lap and fast each other in parallel horizontal planes.
2'. In a road grader, the combination With a grader blade, of a pair of rotary Vcutters and throvvers to pulverize and deliver dirt raised by the blade; each of the said cutters and throwers having knives. With angularly disposed backs, and the knives of the two cutters and throwers being arranged to lapV and fast each other in parallel horizontal planes, and tbeouter end oi' the grader blade being disposed at a point adjacent to the radii of the two cutters and throwers;
3. In a road grader, the Combination of a Wheel supported frame, a vertically adjustable grader blade carried by said frame, manual means to adjusty said blade, a motor on the frame, rotary cutters and throwers with the blade and each having` knives arranged' to lap and fast each other in parallel planes, and each having backs on their knives, and a driving connection intermediate of the' motor and said cutters and throvvers. l
