ments in track gauges and it 1s an obj ect of the invention to provide a novel vand improved device of this general character which may be employed `with convenience and facility to assure the proper setting of the rails of a trackway.
lt is also an object of the invention to prol vide a novel and impro-ved device of this general character which, in addition to operating as a gauge, serves as an implement to push or pull the rails of a trackway one with respect to the other as may be required to restore the traclrway to the desired gauge.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my im proved track guage whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. y
.The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will nowproceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated tubular bodyprovided at its outer end with the longitudinally disposed extension 2, which, when the device is in use, is adapted to rest upon or overlie the yhead of a rail with the adj acent end 3 of the body 1 in contact with the inner side of said head.

Upon requisite'rotation of the rollen or gear 19105 the body 1 and member 10 may bemoved y endwise one with respect to the other. y
As herein disclosed, the'roller or gear 19 is mounted uponv a shaft 21 connecting the webs 17 and loosely engaged with said shaft 110 21 between the web 17 and the roller or gearl 19 isan end portion O an elongated operate in lever 22. Pivotall en aired with the g Y g e lever 22 is a doublepawl 23. When the pawl 23 is in one position, the swinging or oscillation of the lever 22 rotates the roller or'gear 19 in one direction to impart endwisey movement to the member 10 and when the position of the pawl 23 is reversed the 'roller or gear 19 is rotated in the opposite direction and the member 10 consequently moved in an opposite direction. Pivotally supported by each of the rodslS is a holding pawl 24, one of the said pawls 24being in engagement with the roller or gear 19 when the second-pawl 24 isin an inoperative position. The functioning of each of the pawls 24 is dependent upon the direction in which it is desired to rotate the roller or gea-r 19.
The side face of the memberV 10 is provided withthe-graduations 25 withV which coact an index or pointer 26 carried by the adjacent or inner end of the body 1. When my improved device is engaged with theheads of the rails of a trackway,
'the shoulder 3 is in contact with the inner side of one of said heads and the fiange 11 in contact with the inner side of the head of the second rail. 1f the rails are in proper relation,y the index `26 will register withthe zero graduations 27 or other identified graduation. vShould the graduations lshow that the rails have spread, the roller or gearv 19 Will'be rotated in a direction whereby the A. bodyl and member 10 will have relative inward movementand which movement is continued until the rails have been returned .toV their,1 desiredl guage.
