SPOOL FLANGE.
icense.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 31, 1922 Application filed December 8, 1920. Serial No. 429,212.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I THOMAS A. CUNNING- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State vide an improved construction of metal head or flange for spools of the character commonly employed for winding the note sheets or music rolls, socalled, for controlling automatic piano players and the like. The invention relates to and consists in the construction of the spool head or flange regardless of the use to which the spool is put, and consists in the elements and features of said head or flange shown and described, as indicated in the claims.
In the drawings: Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of the two opposite end heads or flanges for music roll spools, embodying this invention. Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the exterior disks, composing either of the flanges shown in Figures 1 and 2, in the four successive stages of its production by dies for pressing or drawing it from a flat disk to its final form for assembling w th the other exterior member of the flange.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of said other member of the flan e, in three successive stages of its formation, the last sta e bein different for the two flanges, as in icate in the figure.
Figures-5 and 6 are perspective views of the two parts of the reinforcingmetal member employed as a filler within the flanges shown in Figures 1 and 2, said two parts of the reinforcement being shown in the form in which they are respectively produced from plain annular disks by proper dies.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the complete reinforcement, consisting of the two members shown in Figures 5 and 6, properly assembled together, ready for embodiment in the completed flange.
Figure Bis an axial section at the line, 8-8, shown in Figure 1.
Figure 9 is an axial section at the line as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 10 is an axial section of the reinforcement comprising the two assembled parts.
The spool head or flange shown in the drawings comprises exterior pressed metal disks, A and B, the disk, A, having an elongated central hollow boss, A for engaging the end of the spool indicated in dotted line in F igures 1 and 2, and having a flat web, A, from which said boss, A protrudes. The other disk, B, is annularly corrugated at B, (see Figs. 8 and 9) and has a central boss, B provided with a central depression, b for centering the spool oh its support for rotation. These exterior members, A and B, are connected together at their periphery as seen at a, I), being assembled with their central'bosses rotruding oppo sitely, their dished sides acing each other in order to enclose a cavity. Before placing the parts together, there is inserted the reinforcing filler comprising two pressed metaldisks, C and D, both of which are dished, and which are nested, the disk, D, within the disk, C, and clinched together at their peripheries as' seen at 0, (Z. The exterior of the two nested disks, C, has a fiat web, C for seating on the inner side of the flat web, A of the exterior disk, A; and it has also a central boss, C projecting from said flat web and fitting snugly within the elongated hollow boss, A of the exterior disk, A, when said two flat Webs of the-disk are in contact. The other of the two nested disks, D, has also a central boss, I), which projects within the central boss, B of the exterior disk, B, for reinforcing said exterior boss; and the entire reinforcement comprising the part, E, is diametered at the clinched. periphery for fitting snugly within the inner-clinched one of the two exterior disks, at their clinching, and whereby said reinforcement serves as a mandrel over which the clinching of the two exterior disks together is effected without danger of warping or distorting the disks or crimping their flanges, as would otherwise be liable to occur.
I claim 1. A spool head or flange comprising two exterior pressed metal disks, one having an elongated hollow central boss for engaging the end of the spool shaft and a flat web from which 'said boss protrudes, the other disk being annularly corrugated for still?- ness and having acentra l boss provided with a central depression for centering the spool on its support for rotation, said exterior disks being clinched together at their periphery, and a reinforcement comprising two pressed metal parts, nested and clinched together at their periphery, one having a fiat web for seating on the inner side of the flat web first mentioned, and having a central boss projecting from said web fitting snugly within the hollow boss mentioned when said flat webs are in contact, the other of said nested parts having acentral boss projecting within the central boss of the second mentioned exterior disk for reinforcing the same, said reinforcement being \dimensioned as to its clinched periphery for snugly fitting within the inner-clinched of the two exterior disks at their clinching; whereby it serves as a mandrel in the clinching together of said exterior disks.
2. A spool head or flange comprising pressed metal disks oppositely dished for enclosing a cavity and clinched together at their periphery, in combination with a pressed metal reinforcement consisting of two pressed metal parts dished and clinched together at their periphery, and dimensioned as to their clinched circumference for seating snugly within the inner one of the two clinched-together exterior disks at the clinching of the latter; whereby said reinforcement serves as a mandrel in the clinchingof the exterior disks.
3 A spool head or flange comprising exteriorly two pressed metal disks oppositely dished and clinched together at their periphery, having each a central exteriorlyprotrudinghollow boss, and a pressed metal reinforcement for said exterior disks con sisting of two pressed metal disks having respectively 'coaxialprotrusions for enterin and reinforcing the hollow bosses of said exterior disks.
4. 111 the construction defined in claim 3 foregoing, the reinforcing disks being oppositely' dished to form said reinforcing bosses, and being clinched together at their periphery, and at said clinched periphery iametered for fitting snugly within the in ner-clinched flange of the exterior disk.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my .hand at Chicago, this 6th day of De cember, 1-920 THOMAS A. CUNNINGHAM,
