CARROLL C. STAHL, LEMOYNE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLOSURE FASTENER.
Application filed May 24,
To all whom it may cof/acera:
Be it known that I, CARROLL C. STAHL, a citizen of the UnitedV States, residing at Lemoyne in the county of Cumberland and State of IDennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closure Fasteners, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in closure fasteners and it has for its objects among others to provide a simple and efficient fastener applicable to various uses, so constructed as to do away with a staple and hasp, composed of few parts and those readily assembled, and not liable to get out of order, although capable of manufacture at small cost.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specic'ally defined inthe appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a substantially central vertical transverse section showing the invention applied to a lunch box.
Figure 2 is an enlarged section through the parts closely associated with my invention, the latter being shown partly in section and partly in elevation.
Figure 3 is a top plan with a portion of the box shown broken away.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
While in thel present instance my improvement is shown as applied to a lunch box it is evident that it is capable of use upon other forms of receptacles having a flanged hinged lid. i
Referring to the drawingsl designates a receptacle, as a lunch box, and 2 its lid or cover hinged as at 3 and provided at its front with a depending flange 4 having in this instance a reinforcing beaded or rolled edge 5.
In constructing the lunch box the front wall is provided with two openings 6 and 7, and the flange of the lid with an opening 8 adapted to register with the opening 6 in the front of the box, as seen in Figures 1 and 2.
To the rear face of the front wall of the box is aiiixed by solder or otherwise the support for the fastener. This support may Specicaticn of Letters Patent.

be, as herein shown, of a single piece of material bent to form the front niece 9, the rear piece 10, the parallel side pieces 11 and 12, the partition 13 and the member 1a connecting the front piece 9 with the said partition at its junction with the side 12, as shown in Figure 3, although it be formed of more than one piece if preferred, the result being the same. The rear wall 10 and the said partition 13 are provided with openings 15 and 16 respectively, in alignment with the openings 6 and 8 in the front wall and the flange of the lid as seen in Figure 2.
The locking member comprises a rod or wire having one end beveled. as seen at 17, the arm of the locking member having such beveied end being slidably mounted in the openings in the front wall of the box, an opening 18 in the front piece 9, and the openings in the rear piece and the partition as seen in Figure 2, the said arm being numbered 19. After passing rearward through the opening 15 the locking member is bent at right angles to the said arm as seen at 20, and then again at right angles to said member 2O to form the arm 21 which extends through the opening 7 in the front wall of the box as seen best in Figure 2.
22 is a spring around the arm 19 between the rear piece' 10 and the partition 13, with one end abutting the said rear piece and the other end engaged in one of a series of openings 23 in the arm 19, whereby the tension of the spring may be adjusted as occasion may require or as may be required according to the thickness of the depending flange of the lid.
In use, the parts being as shown, if the lid is lowered, the bottom edge of the flange L will strike and ride over the beveled end 0f the arm 19, forcing the same rearward till the flange has reached its proper closed position, when the spring will force the said arm forward and its beveled end will engage in the opening 8 in the front wall of the box and the lid will be secured in the closed position. When it is desired to open the lid, pressure on the extended end 24 of the arm 21 will force the same inward and consequently the beveled end of the arm 19 till the same is out of the opening 8 in the flange when the lid can be raised. The fastener is automatic in its locking movement.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to Without departing` from the spirito the iny vention or sacricing'any o its advantages.
What is claimed as new 1s 1. A closure fastener attaehzibie to the in-v ner face or" a Wall of a receptacle, and comprising rear and side walls and an intermediate partition., and :L spring-notuated .tas tener having,r one member movable through openings in the said rear wall and partition and adapted for passage through a Coincident opening` in a Wall of afrecept-nole.
2. A receptacle, and u. hinged iid therefor having a depending Hnge with an open-
