Description
UNITED STAT-ES PAT ENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. SHANLEY, 'OEDES HORN-ES, IOWA.
SEWER TRAP.
T0 all'whom it may comm! Be it known thatI, WILLIAM C. SHANLEY,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident -sive construction, and in which the cap or cover of the trap may be moved through an arc of a circle after'the trap has-been set, and without affecting the seal of the cap or cover on the trap-body, and whereby a connecting pipe'leading to the trap may be easily and conveniently applied atany part of said .segmentfor the convenience of an operator in connecting a drain pipe to a trap.
. My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as .hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompany ing drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a, vertical, central, sectional view of my improved trap.
Figure 2 is a top or plan View of the trap.
Figure 3 shows an elevation illustrating the manner of attaching my improved trap to a bath tub.
Figure 4 is an enlarged, detail sectional view illustrating my improved gasket.
Figure 5 is a central, sectional view through my improved gasket; and
Figure 6 is a top or plan view of the parts shown in Figure 5.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate generally a hollow, cylindrical trap body, which is open at'its upper end and provided with internal threads 11 formed on a shoulder 12 to coact with a downwardly extending flange 13 of a cap or cover 14.
The cap or cover member 14 projects laterally beyond the downwardly extending flange 13 and a. liquid tight joint is insured between the cap and the body by the use of my improved gasket, which comprises a 'rubber ring 15, which rests on the upper edge of the body 10 and a metallic ring 16, having at its outer edge a downwardly extending flange 17.
From the construction of the parts just tight joint.
Speciflcationof Letterszratent. -Patented Jan. 17, 1922. Application filed August 20, 1919. Serial No- 318,753.
' described, it will be seen that the rubber ring 15 is enclosed between the upper edge of the body 10, the sides of the flanges 17 .and 13 and the lower surface of the ring 16.
'When therefore the trap cover is screwed down on to the body, pressure will be exerted against the surface of the ring 15 from all sides, thereby insuring a liquid In addition to th'S feature, it will be notedthat when the cover 14 .is to be unscrewed, then the rubber washer 15 contacts with the flange 13 only at one edge, while the remaining pressure of the cover member against the body member is carried by the .metal to metal contact of the threads 12 and the ring 16. I
Corrosion of the flange 13 or any other condition, which would cause an ordinary rubber ring to cling either to the body member or to the-cover member to prevent unscrewing the latter, is. therefore limited to the surface exposed to-one edge of the compressible washer, so that the cover may be very readily unscrewed, even though it has been untouched for a long period of time.
Extending through the cover member 14 is an inlet pipe 18, which is preferably composed of non-corrosible metal, such for instance, as bra&, and the inlet pipe is held in place by the threads 19, which coact with threads disposed within a shoulder or flange 20 mounted on the cover. The shoulder or flange 20 is a wrench lug and is disposed eccentrically relative to the cover for purposes which will hereinafter be described.
Mounted above the wrench lug 20 is a lock washer 21. Slidably received within the inlet pipe 18 is a second pipe 22 preferably composed of brass or other non-corrosive material, which may be locked from movement relative to the pipe 18 by screwing down a collar 23 against a compressible .washer 24. Suitable means may be provided for securing the pipe 22 to the waste 25 and overflow 26 of a bath tub 27.
It will be seen that when the parts are installed as shown in Figure 3, that then the body 10 may be set in the floor and the wrench lug 20 may be used to turn the cover member 14 to any position, so thatthe pi 22 can register with the fittings of the tu The dotted lines in Figure 2 clearly illustrate the various positions to which the pipe lations, errors and other reasons for bending pipes, so that their ends m'ay'be connected together.
Adjacent to the bottom of the body lois a clean out plug 28, which is threaded to a collar 29 and a liquid tightjoint formed by means of washers or' gaskets 30 and Bl simiv structureoruseof mechanical equivalents lar to the gaskets and'l6f" Extending laterally from one side of the body, adj acentito the, upper portion'ther'eof is thewaste or outletlplpe comprising a collar 32 into. whichis threaded. a- T 33, having one 'of its openings turned upwardly to receive a second clean out plug 34,' fwh1 ch 71s sealed relative to the T m the same manner, asar'e the-plug 28, andthecover member 14.
The plug 34' and the plugQS areboth imvided with eccentric wrench lugsf35 similar to the lugs ,fwhereby thef plugs may be {more readily loosened forjunscrewing or tightening when being screwed;
An ad ant'age of y 1Inprovedconstrucfor .wiping in Ieadjoints.
It is also possible to rotate the 14 through approximately "180 degrees to thereby position the pipe22 to register" with any fitting to which it is to be @nnectea. Whenever it is desired 011 5 1 eifihefth de my' invention, and it is myintention to cover by my claim any modified forms of portion having a raisedwrench jlug arranged eccentrically relative tov the cover; said wrench lugbe ng nternally screw threaded,
jan'i'nlet pipe open at both 'endsand screwed 'intofthe'saidfwrenchlug and extended downwardly into the body "tof'a point near the lower portion thereof, and "a compressible 7 ga slret' device between" the cover and: the bod .s dl'per s in .3 r n th after the body'has been fixed inposition, the
'fcover may be turned a part of a; revolution without substantially affecting the gasket seal and whereby the wrench lug :Inay j be 'inoved to position where itmaybe readily and easilyi aligned Witl I and connected .to a j -to' discharge into the body 'portion. Moines, Iowa, Augusteg 1919." i
