Be it known that I, GABRIEL E. ROHMER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Brooklyn, Kings County, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Die-Casting Machines,of which "the following is a specification.
My invention relates to die casting machines having for its object to providea commercially practicable apparatus particularly for use in the manufacturing arts of die casting non-ferrous metals, such as lead, tin, zinc, antimony, aluminum, etc., and their alloys, using compressed air as a pressure agent.
While I am aware that die casting machines, using compressed air and other means as pressure have been produced, none of these apparatus,-to my knowledge,-i have been devised which are of simple and quick operation, while the question of controlling the heat of the metal in the pot seems to have been entirely overlooked. Moreover, such machines were very dangerous because of the likelihood of the molten metal escaping.
I propose, therefore, inthe present embodiment of my invention to overcome these difficulties, and as a further object I propose easy operation of the die under the casting nozzle ofthe pot.
I'Vith the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, an embodiment of my invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings-forming part of the present application-and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims.

In the present embodiment of my die cast ing machine the metal holder or pot 1 is substantially cylindrical, with a truncated cone portion 2 terminated by a narrow neck nozzle 3.

In the wall of the pot a hollow longitudinal boss 11 is provided, adapted to receive the thermo-couple 12 leading by the Wires 13 to the pyrometer 14.
To keep the metal molten the pot is surrounded by .a furnace 15 supported b y the plates 16. This furnace is properly insulated by the refractory material `17 and is provided with two sets of burners 18 and 19, while at the outside of its open circularibottom 20 a triple burner ring 21 surrounds the nozzle of the pot.
The rods 22 mounted on the base plate 23 support the two housing frames 24 on which the pot head 9 is bolted.
rIhis pot head is provided with a bell shape dome like portion 25 having a boss 26 serving the double purpose of a bearing for the plunger 27 and as a stufiing box 28 for said plunger 27. The said plunger is provided with a conical shape end 27'LL itted in thenozzle outlet 4. The boss 26 is extended as a circular portion 29 holding the stuffing box gland 30 internally while its outer periphery is threaded to receive the nut 31 holding the stutling box tight.
An aperture 32 is also provided in the pot head for the purpose of enabling the filling up of the pot with molten metal An asbestos filled grooved cap 32, attached to-ascrew spindle 33, operated by the hand wheel 34, permits the tight closing of the inlet'hole 32, and the'two members 35 pivoted at 36 allow this closing cap mechanism to be movable,
/so as to permit free access to the inlet hole with a vessel full of molten metal.
The bracket 37 bolted on the pot head 9, is for the double purpose of housing the pressure valve operating mechanism and the means for imparting up and down motion to the plunger 27, for releasing and stopping` the inward flow of the metal into the die.
The plunger 27 extending through the stuffing box 28 is supported and guided at 75, and has a gear rack portion 38, in mesh with the sector gear 39, keyed to the shaft 40 to which the counter-Weight pulley 41 is attached at one end, while at the other end the shaft 4() is provided with a square porl shape portion 25 of the pot, as partially y/s/hown at 47.
/ On the other side of the upper face of the bracket 37, a bearing housing 48 is provided, holding on one side the ball bearing valve adjustment 49, regulated by the nuts 50,
while at its other side the, counterweight valve'operating pulley 51, is keyed on the valve shaft 52.
' The Qounterweight valve operating pulley is provided with ear plates 53, connected by the pivoted member 54 to the handle brackets 55, which are connected at one end to the timing plate 56, and at the other end to the operating yhandle 57.
The timing plate pivoted at 76 is provided with two pins 58 and 59. When the timing plate is positioned as illustrated'in the drawing, with the pin 58 adjacent and tangent to the side of the timing arm, the valve is so disposed as to shut oil' the supply of compressed air and leave the open space in the-pot open to the atmosphere or in exhaust position, while when through the downward y motion of the operating member the pin 59 becomes adjacent and tangent to the other side of the timing arm through the operation of the members 55 and 54 transmit-ted by the ear plates 53 and pulley 51 to the valve shaft 52, the valve opens and lets the pressure on top of the metal without disturbing the plunger. Upon furtherdownward movement of the arm 55 the plunger is raised.
The bracket 60 in the rear of the machine supports theshaft 61 holding the pulleys 62 used as idlers for thecables 63 and 64 attached to counterweight pulleys 41 and 51 respectivelyl To the cables 63 and 64 the counterweights 65 are attached and connected to the springs 66 held fast to the bed plate 23 of the machine.
To the compressed air valve 45 the compressed airinlet main pipe 67 is connected,
and supply of air in this main pipe is obtained by the operation of valve 68.
For the easy and quick operating of the die I .have provided a. hydraulic jack comrising ,a cylinder 69 connected by the pipe 0 to a pump or a system of hydraulic accumulators. The hydraulic jack plunger 71 supports a platform 72 sliding in between y the two rods 73, and on the platform 72 the rail 74 is adapted for the sliding of the die 7.
The operation of this machine is most simple as when the molten metal has beeen introduced in the pot and the die 7 properly locked in the ball shaped nozzle 3 of the pot, one downward stroke of the operating .handle 57 and its release performs the triple operation of admitting immediate pressure of compressedy air on the metal in the porl (through the working of the pin 59 and members 56, 55, 54, 53, 51 and 52 as previously explained) opening of the plun er through thecircular motion of the timlng.
arm 42 turning the shaft 41a thus operating upwardly the lsector gear --39 in mesh with the plunger rack 38 and returning the parts to normal position. Upon releasing the operating handle the machine is brought. to
normal position through the action of the counterweights 65 and cables 63, the sector pulley 41 being first operated, immediately .pushing down the plunger and closing the nozzle. Thus the danger of any molten metal -escaping upon removal of the die is completely eliminated. At the same time pressure upon the metal in the die is sustained until the nozzle is-closed and the die ready to be removed. Upon definitive travel of the operating handle 57 releasing the timing pin 59, the movement of the tlming pin 58 to engagement with the arm 42 operates through parts 56, 55, 54, 53, 51 and 52, the valve 45 returning it to the exhaust position 45a.
As the qualityv and structure of the metal in die castings dependa great deal on the keeping of the metal in thepot close to its initial melting point, the thermo-coupleand pyrometer arrangement provided are an important part of this equipment and will permit close control of the heat temperature as the dial of the pyrometerwill be' a. constant guide to the operator of the machine so that the heat generated by the burners can -be regulated accordingly.
It is obvious that several embodiments of the main features of my die casting machine can be devised without in iany 'waydeparting from' the main spirit ofy my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a die casting machine, a container for the material to be cast, means Ifor maintaining the material molten in said container, an outlet nozzle for said container, closure means for said outlet nozzle, pressure means for admitting and exhausting pressure to and from said.container, and
simultaneously operating means adaptedy upon one manual stroke to successively voperate said pressure-means to admit pressure to sald contalner, sald closure means to open said nozzle, said closure means' to close said nozzle, and said pressure means to shut oi pressure from said container and exhaust pressure therefrom.
2. In a die casting mach1ne,\a container for the material to be cast, Vmeans for maintaining the material molten in said container, an outlet nozzle for said container, closure means' for said outlet nozzle, pressure means for admitting and exhausting pressure to and from said container, means normally holding said closure means in closed position and 4said pressure means in exhaust position, and simultaneously operating means adapted upon one manual stroke to successively operate said pressure means to admit pressure to said container, said closure means to open said nozzle, said closure means to close said nozzle, and said pressure means to shut off pressure from said container and exhaust pressure therefrom.
3. ln a die casting machine, a container for thematerial to be cast, means for maintaining the material molten in'V said container, an outlet nozzle for said container, closure means for said outlet nozzle, pressure means for admitting#I an exhausting pressure to and from said container, means connected to said closure means and adapted to normally hold said closure means yieldingly in closed position, and independent means connected to said pressure means and adapted to normally hold said pressure means yieldingly in said position, and simultaneously operating means adapted upon one manual stroke to successively 'operate said pressure means to admit pressure to said container, said closure means to open said nozzle, said closure means to close said nozzle and said pressure means to shut off pressure from said container and exhaust pressure therefrom.
4. 1n a die casting machine, a container for the material to be cast, means for main taining the material molten in said conrainer, an outlet nozzle for said container, closure means for said outlet nozzle, pressure means VJfor admitting and exhausting pressure to and from said container, means normally holding said. closure means yieldingly in closed position, and said pressure means yieldingly in exhaust position, means for opening said closure means comprising a pivoted lever operatively connected to said closure means, a. pivoted member pivoted to said lever and provided at each side of said lever with stop pins spaced therefrom and adapted to permit free movement of said pivoted member in either direction relatively to said lever and adapted upon engagement of said pins with said lever to move the same, and means for operating said pressure means comprising a lever operatively connected to said pressure means and connected to said pivoted member, adapted upon one stroke to successively operate said pressure means to admit pressure to said container, said closure means to open said nozzle, said closure means to close said pivoted member" said nozzle, and said pressure means to shut off pressure from said container and exhaust pressure therefrom. y
5. 1n a die casting machine, a container for material comprising a dome head, a detachable pot secured to the under side of said dome head and depending therefrom and provided in its lower end with an outlet nozzle, means for maintaining the material molten in said pot comprising jets directed toward said pot and inclined in the direction of said dome head and adapted to heat said dome head, a closure member for said nozzle extending through said dome head, and means mounted upon said dome head adapted to operate said closure member to open and close said nozzle, and means mountef` upon said dome head for admitting pressure to said container.
6. ln a die casting machine, a supporting frame, affurnace carried thereby open at its top and provided at its bottom with a reduced opening, a supporting head above said furnace, a pot detachably supported thereby, extending into said furnace and provided with a reduced nozzle projecting through said reduced opening in the bottom of said furnace, closure means for said nozzle, pressure means adapted to admit pressure to said pot, means disposed Within the furnace adapted to maintain the material molten therein and supporting means disposed below the bottom of said furnace ex terior of said furnace for heating said projecting nozzle exterior of said furnace.

In a die casting machine, a container for material, means for maintaining the ma'- terial molten in said container, an 4outlet nozzle for said container provided with an orifice, a molding die provided With an orilice adapted to register with said orifice of said nozzle, closure means for said nozzle, means for admitting pressure to said container, a tablesupporting said molding die, and means adapted' to raise and lower said table perpendicularly and adapted to yield` ably support said table and adapted to tightly hold said molding die in engagement With said nozzle; v 11. In a die casting machinea.container for material, means for maintaining the material molten in said container, an outlet nozzle for said containerprovided With an orifice, a molding die provided With an orifice adapted to register with said orifice of said nozzle, closure means for said nozzle, and means for admitting lpressure to said container, a table supporting said molding die, and means for raising and lowering said table perpendicularly comprising a controllable pressure ram disposed directly beneath saidmolding die in the engaged position of saidA molding die With said nozzle and exerting an upward yieldable pressure upon said molding die in the engaged position of said molding die with said nozzle.
12. In a die casting machine, a furnace, a
container for material disposed in said furnace, means for maintaining the material molten, thermo-couple means disposed in the Wall of said container and indicating means connected thereto and adapted to indicate the temperature of the material.

In a die casting machine, a furnace, a container for material disposed in said furnace, said container being provided with an enlarged 'portion extending lengthwise thereof and provided With an elongated socket, and thermo-couple meansdisposed in said socket in the Wallof said container, means directed against the Wall of said container adapted to maintain thematerial molten, and indicating means connected to` said thermocouple and adapted to indicate the temperature of the material.
