RULLTlR-BELRIEG- SVQ'I'VEL WRENCH PLATE.
Application filed. July 10, 1928, Serial No. 395,263.
To all whom it may cancer 1t:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. Hernan- SON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ranger, in the county of Eastland and State of Texas, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Bearing Swivel Wrench Plates, of which the following is a specification.
.My invention relates to roller bearing swivel wrench plates, and the object is to provide such plates for use with any suitable fishing tool, or bit for use in oil fields or water well drilling; and some of the advantages are that the improved plate makes it possible for one man to manipulate the bit or fishing tool where heretofore more men were required and to prevent the bits or tools from falling out of the wrench while swiveling. This plate also prevents the operators from being hurt by the falling of the bits or tools and the plate is economical because the rollers overcome friction and the operation is made with less labor and in less time. There will be less liability of the bits or tools slipping out of the wrench and stopping the holes. Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings which form a part of this application, reference to which is here had.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the swivel plate. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same with a section of a bushing which is detachably mounted thereon. Fig. 3 is a section of a still smaller bushing. Fig. l is an inverted plan view of the swivel plate. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of the bushing shown in Fig. 3.
The improved plate 1 may be cast or machine made. It has the usual opening in the body to receive different bits or tools. Ihe plate has recesses in the underside to receive antifriction rollers 2 for running on the yoke which supports the plate. This will make the plate more easily turned. The plate has curved depression provided with a bottom part 3 to receive the cylin drical portion of the tool and the terminals of the wall of the cavity will prevent the tool or hit from slipping out because the Specification of Letters Patent.
Renewed December '7, 1921. Serial No. 529,716.
terminals 4i form shoulders or stops which are closer together than the full width of the depression into which the shoulder of the tool projects.
The rollers 2 are countersunk in the underside of the plate and project just far enough down to prevent the body of the plate 1 from rubbing on the operating yoke.
In order to provide for difl'erent sizes of tools, a series of bushing or tools are provided and these bushings or tools have the same general interior contour as the plate 1 without the bushings or tools. The bushings or tools will occupy the depressions 3. Figs. 2 and show one size of a bushing 5, and Fig. 3 shows bushing 6 having a still smaller recess 7 for a smaller bit or tool. Various other changes in the sizes, proportions and construction of the various parts may be made without departing from my invention. The bushings are made rigid with plate 1 by bolts 8 which project through holes 9. l
What I claim, is,
l. A. swivel wrench. plate provided with anti-friction rollers in the under face thereof and having a tool receiving opening there through and a curved cavity in the upper face about said opening and a curved wall forming the boundary of said cavity and the terminals of said wall forming stop shoulders to prevent tools from slipping from said plate while seated in said cavity.
2. A swivel wrench plate provided with antifriction rollers in the under face thereof and having a tool receiving opening therethrough and a curved cavity in the upper face about said opening and a curved wall forming the boundary of said cavity and the terminals of said wall forming stop shoulders to prevent tools from slipping from said plate while seated in said cavity and means adapting said plate to hold tools of difierent sizes.
3. In a swivel wrench plate provided with roller bearings partly countersunk in the under face thereof and having a curved cavity, and a flat bottom and a tool receiving opening therethrough the wall of said cavity being inclined and the terminals of said wall forming stops to prevent tools from falling from said plate, a bushing adapted to occupy said cavity and having an exterior contour conforming to the interior of said cavity and when placed in said cavity held in place by said terminals,
g V eosiei and means for attacl'iing said bushingto hold tools of different sizes consisting of said plate. bushings having their bottom and exterior 4. A swivel Wrench plate provided with a surfaces eonformingin contour to said plate tool receiving opening therethrongh and a and. having similar cavities and stop a curved cavity about said opening and a shoulders adapted to rest on said plate and 1.5
