ARTHUR WILLIAM WHITE, OF LONDON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
SEPARATING DEVICE FOR THRASHING DEACHINES.
Application filedApril 12, 1 920.
further object is to construct a devicein which the straw will be moved at the required speed to completely clear the same from the thrashing cylinder, such speed increasing until the straw is discharged from the device. A still further object is to provide means for agitating the straw and aceentuating the movement thereof while passing over the device.
My invention consists of independent separating decks carrying suitable toothed racks, such decks being preferably inclined to the horizontal, hangers pivotally supporting the lower ends of such decks, lateral stub shafts freely mounted in suitable bearings in the independent decks, rocker arm's secured to said stub shafts at their upper ends, independent lateral shafts freely mounted in suitable bearings, the rocker arms of the outer decks suitably secured to one of the lateral shafts and the rocker arms of the intermediate deck suitably secured to the other lateral shaft, depending arms secured to the opposite ends of the respective lateral shafts, a lateral driving shaft, crank wheels mounted on the driving shaft, a suitable power pulley on the driving shaft, connecting rods, each connected at one end to the corresponding crank wheel on the driving shaft and their other ends connected to the depending arms on the respective lateral shafts, and agitators extending longitudinally through said independent decks and suitably secured to the aforesaid stub shafts, all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of a device constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a cross section and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. it), 1922.
Serial No. 373,336.
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail of a portion of one of the decks showing the agitators.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts inthe difierent views.
1 are the outer decks and 2 is the intermediate deck. 3 arev longitudinal racks suitably mounted onthe upper side of the decks 1 and 2, and 4 are inclined lateral slats, suitably separated, and extending between the side members of the decks 1 and 2. 5 are brackets carrying. a cross shaft '6, and .7
are hanger links pivotally connected at their lower ends to the inner ends of thedecks 1 and 2 and at their upper ends to the crossshaft 6. v
8 are stub shafts freely mounted in suit- .able bearings 9 on the'inner sides of the side members of the decks 1 and 2, 10 and 11 are lateral shafts rotatably mounted in, bearings 12 and 13. 14 are rocker arms Suitably secured at their upper ends to the stub shafts 8 of the outer decks 1 and at their lower ends to the shaft 10. 15 is a rocker arm suitably secured at its upper end to the stub shaft 8 of the intermediate deck 2 and at its lower end to the lateral shaft 11. 16 is a depending arm secured tothe lateral shaft 10, and 17 is a depending arm secured to the opposite end of the shaft 11. 18 is a suitably mounteddriving shaft extending laterally of the device and carrying the pulley 19 by means of which the device is driven. 20 and 21 are crank wheels suitably mounted on the ends of the driving shaft 18, and 22 and 23 are connecting rods respectively connected at one end to the crank heels 20 and21 and at the other end to the rocker arms 16 and 17. g
'24 are double agitators of sector shape adapted to extent through longitudinal slots 25 in the decks 1 and 2 on each side of the racks 3. These agitators 24 are suitably secured to the stub shafts 8 of the decks l and 2. v
, The operation of the device is as follows. Upon the thrashed straw being deposited on the decks 1 and 2, the straw is immediately moved up such decks under action of racks 3 and the alternate reciprocating motion of the decks 1 and 2, the grain being separated from the straw as it moves up these decks and such movement being accentuated by the movement of the agitators 24 until the straw is discharged from the outer ends of the decks 1 and 2 at a speed preferably double its starting speed. This is achieved by the operation of the decks 1 and 2' and the agitators 24.
The alternate reciprocatory motion of the outer decks 1 and the intermediate deck 2 rocker arm's 141 and the attached decks 1,
the depending arms 17 through the medium of the connecting rod 23 and crank wheel 21 turns the shaft 11 in the reverse direction, consequently lowering the rocker arm 15 andthe attached deck 2.
W hen the pulley 19 is rotated the connecting rods 22 and 23 oscillate-the arms 16 and 17 thus giving an oscillating movement to the rocker arms 1 1 and 15 connected to the decks 1 and 2. Such oscillatory move-- ment of'these rocker arms imparts a peculiar movement to the decks givingthem a longitudinal movement in one direction and a corresponding lowering of the outer ends of the decks, and on reciprocating a longitudinal movement in therother direction and an upward movement of the outer ends of-the decks;
It will be seen on reference to Fig. 1 of the drawing that the rocker arm 15 of the intermediate'deck 2 is so arranged respectively to the rocker. arms 14 on the outer decks 1, that the action of such intermediate deck 2 will be alternate to the action to the outer decks 1.
The agitators 24 being connected to the rotatable stub shafts 8 they will be oscillated by the action of such rocker'arms 14 and 15 simultaneously with the lowering and raising of the outer ends of the decks 1 and When the outer ends of the decks 1 and 2 are lowered, the agitators 24 will be swung into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, and when the outer ends of the decks is raised they will be swung into the position shown in full lines. This action of the agitators serves to accentuatethe speed of the straw on the decks 1 and 2 as well as separate any grain remaining in the straw by agitating the same.
The agitators 2d extending through the decks 1 and 2, could be used'with a single deck or with decks which do not operate alter- 'nately as described above.
The essential features of these agitators are that they extend through such deck and are operated in unison with the reciprocatory movement of the same. 1
From the above description it will be seen that I have devised a simple and effective separating device for thrashing machines and one that will separate the grain from the straw more effectively than the present separating devices at present in use.
