IMPROVEMENT IN ELECTRICAL STOP-MOTIONS FOR MACHiNERV.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lddflfi'l', dated Juno 24. 1673: application filed November 27, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILE Mnnnrnus, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a Method of suddenly Stopping the Motion of Machinery, of which the following is a-specification:
The object of my invention is to enable the motion of the machinery in mills, &c., where numbers of operatives are employed, to be instantaneously stopped, by the most simple means, and from any of a number of convenient points, for the purpose of preventing the serious accidents and loss of lilewhich frequently occur, owing to the cntangling of clothing, 81-0., in machinery and shat'ting. I accomplish this object by so combining an electrical battery and wire or wires leading to different portions of a building with the steameugine, water-wheel, or other prime mover of machinery, that the breaking or completing of the circuit at any point shall have the offeet of instantaneously cutting olf the steam or othersource of power, and ot' thus stopping the machinery.
One of the most simple ways of carrying out my invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a view of the combination of devices employed when the circuit is completed and the machinery in motion; and Fig. 2, the
same parts as they appear when the circuit is broken and the motion of the machinery stopped.
A represents any ordinary battery, and a a the wires leading from the same to difi'erent portions of the mill, and attached at convenient points between the windows of the several rooms=-for instance, to plates or arms B B, furnished with handles, by simply pulling, or pushing, or turning which the circuit may be broken or completed. The wires are also connected to a magnet, l) and a lever, E, having its fulcrum at b, when in contact with the said magnet completes the circuit, the attraction being suflicieutly strong, when the circuit remains unbroken, to retain the said lever in contact with the magnet, and to resist and hold up a. weight. F, attached. to a cord, b, passing over pulleys c, and having a projec tion, (1, which bears against the short arm of the lever, and constantly tends to draw it away from the magnet. The cord 1) is also 7 connected to a lever-catch, G, combined with devices hereafter referred to, which control the governor-spindle Hot the engine.
When the circuit is broken at any point by turning one of the arms B from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that illustrated in Fig. 2, the magnet D ceases to attract the lever E, and the latter is drawn away from the same, and the weight F permitted to descend, as shown, the said weight, in its descent, drawing the cord b in the direction of the arrow, and thus turning the levercaitch G upon its fulcrum and releasing the spring-arm J, which suddenly draws down the governor-spindle H, this motion of the spindle closing the throttle-valve of the steam-engine and instantaneonsly stopping the latter, and the machinery. driven by the same.
To overcome the efl'ect of momentum, and to thus "enable the machinery to be stopped more suddenly, a brake controlled by the electrical apparatus may also be combined with the fly-wheel of the engine.
With the several parts combined, as above described, the machinery after having been stopped cannotbe again started until the circuit is completed and the apparatus again ready for instant service, and I prefer to employ the arrangement. described when practicable; but this arrangement, it should be understood, can be variously modified to suit the character of the governors and'valves, and of the engine or other prime mover, without departing from my invention.
The arrangement might be so mod1fied,-1t .will be evident, as to cause thestoppageot the machinery by completing the circuit. instead of breaking it, as above described.
I claim- The combination, with an engine or ther motorr-ot' the levers ,LG or equivalentsto r device, a weight or spring operating-sa d device, a trigger for securing said weight, and an electro-magnet arranged to actuate the trigger, as set forth.
