have invented certain new and useful Im-' provements in Hydrocarbon Motors, of which the following is'a specification.
This invention relates to hydrocarbon motors and particularly to the reduction gearing between the crank shaft thereof and a propeller shaft, and the mounting of the parts.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a construction that will permit of unit assembly to thereby facilitate manufacture.
Another object of the invention is to provlde a supporting bearing for the crank shaft beyond the driving gear thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement of supporting bearings for the driven propeller shaft.
Another object of the invention is to mount the propeller shaft so that a gun may project into andshoot through it.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings which form a part of the specification, and in which the figure is largely a longitudinal vertical section through a hydrocarbon motor embodying the invention, some of the parts being shown in elevation. I Referring to pile drawing, 10 represents a crank case or I pport or base of a hydrocarbon motor upon which cylinders 11 are mounted and in which is a crank shaft 12. The motor shownis of the type having two sets of cylinders side by side and the upper part of the crank case between the sets of cylinders is formed with a support 13 for a quick firing gun, the barrel of the supported in the part 14 and the recoil mechanism in the part 15. Suchmotors are intended for use in airplanes and it is intended that the gun may project into the propeller shaft, hereinafter described, and shoot through it.
The front end 16 of the crank case supports a plain bearing 17 for the crank shaft 12, this hearing being lubricated by means of a conduit 18 leading from any suitable pump, not shown.

This constitutes a more rigid and durable propeller attachment than can possibly be secured by the ordinary keyed construction between the propeller and the shaft. .At the same time this flange construction precludes the possibility of assembling any of the propeller shaft bearings from the forward end of the shaft.
Just rearwardly of the flange 25 the shaft 24 is formed with a shoulder 29 against which is an oil throw-off ring 30. Next to the ring 30 is an annular roller bearing 31,

A plate 38 extends from the outside of the cover 21 to the periphery of the shaft 24 adjacent the shoulder 29 and a packing 39 me vents the escape of lubricant around the shaft at that point. Two bearing receiving collars 40 and 41 enclose the bearings 31 and 34 and are secured to the cover 21 by a series of bolts 42, which bolts and their nuts 43 also secure the plate 38 in place. A hearing receiving collar 44 secured to a flange 45 of the front end of the crank case, re'-' ceives the outer race of the bearing 36 above referred to and said bearing is adapted to slide into and out of said collar 44 as the propeller shaft is put in place or removed therefrom.

- The cover 21 also supports a bearing 48, which is shown as a roller bearing, in line with the plain bearing 17 of the crank shaft. This bearing {i8 supports the forwardly extended end 19 of the crank shaft and the inner race is secured-thereon by a nut 49.
A bearing retaining collar is seated in the cover 21 and the bearing 48 is adapted to slide into this collar as the cover 21 1s positioned on the front end of the crank case.
Other forms and modifications of the mechanism shown and described herein may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
, Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a hydrocarbon motor having a crank case and a crank shaft therein extending through the crank case, of a casing detachably secured to the crank case and forming a covering for said extended end of the crank shaft, and a roller bearing mounted in said casing and adapted to receive the end of said crank shaft.
2. The combination with a hydrocarbon motor having a crank case and a crank shaft" therein extending through the crank case, of a casing on the crank case forming a compartment around the extended end of said crank shaft, saidcompartment being separated from the interior of the crank case,
and a roller bearing in said casing for the end of said crank shaft.
3. The combination with a hydrocarbon motor having a crank case and a crank shaft mounted in plain bearings therein, the end of said crank shaft extending through one end of theorem}: case beyond the end hearing, a gear onthe extended part of said shaft, a bearing for said shaft beyond said gear, and a casing supporting said latter bearing and enclosing said gear.
4. The combination with a support, of a propeller shaft, a pair of separated roller bearings for said shaft in said support, and a plain bearing for one end of said shaft.
5.. The combination with a support, of a hollow propeller shaft open at both ends and havin an integral propeller flange, of a roller earing for said shaft in said support adjacent said flange, and a plain bearing for the end of said shaft.
6. The combination with a support, of a hollow propeller shaft open at both ends and having an integral propeller flange, of radial and thrust bearings for said shaft in said support adjacent said flange, and a plain bearing for the end of said shaft.
7. The. combination with a support having a bearing receiving part, of acover adapted to be detachably connected to said support, a propeller shaft extending through said cover, bearings supporting said shaft in said cover, and a bearing surrounding a part of said shaft and adapted to enter said bearing receiving part as the cover is positioned against said support. h 7
'. 8. The combination with a support ing a bearing receiving part, of a cover adapted to be detachably connected to said support, a propeller shaft extending through said cover, and bearings for said shaft in said support and cover, substantially as 'described.
9. The combination with a hydrocarbon motor having a crank case forming a support, of a hollow propeller shaft geared to the motor and having an integral propeller flange, and a roller bearing and a plain hearing for said shaft in said support, said bearings being separated and one being at the end of the shaft and the other being adjacent to the propeller flange.
